Interview with Hamish
We had the pleasure of interviewing Hamish over Zoom video! Hamish is the artistic counterpart to guitarist and songwriter Matthew Benthall. With producer Trey Kams at the helm, the two friends created an entity built on musical stylistic experiments that pull from each of their respective influences. Hamish is a blend of uncanny sounds derived from hip-hop, R&B and dance with elements of jazz, indie and lo-fi. Matt’s writing confronts his identity, his artistic place amongst the American zeitgeist as both an immigrant and a child of two nationalities, and his relationships with love and infatuation.Hamish is an Alternative/Indie artist based in Los Angeles, and the artistic counterpart to guitarist and songwriter Matthew Benthall. Shortly after moving to Texas from the Middle East, he picked up the guitar, started playing in bands, and began to pursue music from the age of 12. Matt attended college primarily for guitar performance; between classes, an identity crisis, and gigs on a weekly basis, he was unable to fully navigate his beginnings with songwriting. Matt dropped out and moved to the west coast to pursue a live performance career as a guitarist. In the wake of the COVID pandemic, he pivoted his pursuits, with all gigs on hold he turned into his own writings and recordings. Without realizing his own departure primarily as an instrumentalist, Hamish created a sound built on musical stylistic experiments that pull from a range of influences, displaying a fresh approach to the new age of genre bending. Drawing from past experiences, Hamish shares his confrontations with love and infatuation, as well as his own identity as both an immigrant and child of two nationalities. He creates a space where comfortability and exploration can be achieved simultaneously. With each song, Hamish showcases his ability to create a beautiful contrast between a spectrum of concepts, sounds and emotions. We want to hear from you! Interview with Bhi Bhiman
We had the pleasure of interviewing Bhi Bhiman over Zoom audio! Singer-songwriter and guitarist Bhi Bhiman doesn't need much to ignite a fury of fascinating expressions; only the simplest of recording set-ups of guitar and vocal mics plugged into his laptop. Yet, even with such simplicity, he projects a towering voice that so urgently grabs your attention, you hang onto every word he sings. Bhiman's latest recording, Substitute Preacher 2, features a new set of mesmerizing acoustic covers in a series that follows his wildly popular 2013 EP (volume 1) of the same name. Fans will be treated to Bhiman's truly original takes on classic hits such as "My Best Friend's Girl" (The Cars), "Back In Black" (AC/DC), "Magic Carpet Ride" (Steppenwolf), "Paranoid" (Black Sabbath), and "My Way" (Frank Sinatra).Bhiman's foray into recording covers (Substitute Preacher 1) was such a hit that his rendition of "Walk of Life" by Dire Straits garnered several sync placements, including for an Apple Watch commercial starring Alice Cooper. The track further landed in a series of Xfinitycommercials. The same year Substitute Preacher 1 was released (2013), Bhiman took the stage at Carnegie Hall for a tribute show hosted by The Roots to commemorate Prince; other special guests included Elvis Costello, Talib Kweli, and Chris Rock.Substitute Preacher 2 revisits his passion for devouring songs written by artists he loves. For Bhiman, it's not simply playing the piece just as the original artists' would. He approaches covers as if it's a standalone new song that he personally wrote himself. Over the course of his career, Bhiman has developed a dedicated following after the release of four acclaimed studio albums. His 2019 album, Peace of Mind, launched as a podcast, with each episode revealing a new song, political theme, and a conversation with a lauded special guest, such as author Dave Eggers. Since its release, Bhiman has worked behind the scenes on diverse projects from acoustic versions of "Faith" by Galantis x Dolly Parton and "Unwell" by Steve Aoki x Kiiara featuring Rob Thomas. He has also worked with actor Keegan-Michael Key, rapper/director Boots Riley, and late iconic musician Chris Cornell. We want to hear from you! Interview with Rebelution
We had the pleasure of interviewing Rebelution over Zoom video! Rebelution –one of the most successful reggae bands of the 21st century – has released their highly anticipated seventh studio album, In The Moment, as a joint venture between the band’s 87 Music label and NYC-based Easy Star Records. The band has released three previous singles including “Satisfied” and “Old School Feeling.” and “Heavy As Lead.” Recorded remotely in the midst of the pandemic, In The Moment is deliberate and wide-ranging, infusing the quartet’s soulful, exhilarating brand of modern reggae with addictive pop hooks, alt-rock grit, and hip-hop grooves. The performances are bold and self-assured, and the production is equally ambitious, drawing on swirling reverb and trippy delay to create an immersive sonic universe that’s both futuristic and vintage all at once. Strip away the intoxicating atmospherics, though, and what remains is a work of profound reflection, a probing, revelatory meditation that balances joy and introspection in equal measure as the band contemplates the meaning of time and how to spend what precious little we have. With COVID safety precautions preventing the band from gathering together and capturing the album live as they had in the past, the quartet decided to record remotely from their respective homes around Southern California. Operating with a hub and spoke model centered around touring guitarist Kyle Ahern, who took the lead producing the collection and fleshing out many of its arrangements, the group pieced together tracks one layer at a time, carefully crafting each song from the ground up with a wide variety of electronic and analog sounds. In addition to all their collaborative work, each member of the band teamed up directly with Ahern to quarterback particular tunes throughout the process, putting their personal stamp on the ever-evolving Rebelution sound. “We all worked together with Kyle to bring our individual visions to life,” said Rachmany. “We wanted to make this the most diverse sounding record we could.” That sonic diversity also gets a boost from the album’s all-star cast of special guests, which includes Jamaican artists Kabaka Pyramid, Keznamdi, and dancehall star Busy Signal, as well as American soul singer Durand Jones. Ultimately, though, the record is pure Rebelution, a powerhouse collection of songs that challenges our perceptions and pushes us to live each day to the fullest; inviting fans to sit back, slow down, and live In The Moment. Interview with TILIAN
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tilian over Zoom video! Tilian is ready to start anew. The Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer has been an unstoppable force in the alt-rock scene since 2007, a master of memorable melodies and more experimental flourishes, both in his solo efforts and as the lead vocalist and guitarist for a number of bands. But 2021’s Factory Reset, his fourth solo album and second on Rise Records, is more him than anything he’s ever done before. This is the first time Tilian’s tackled nearly every aspect of the record himself, and it’s resulted in his most thrillingly eclectic work to date: a falsetto-laced brand of alt-pop that spans everything from trippy psychedelia and heavy prog riffs to warped hip-hop beats and dembow grooves.“The first album that I did with this project was not quite me,” he admits about 2013’s Material Me. “Now I want to make the album that I want to hear. ‘What would be my favorite band?’ as opposed to, ‘What is everyone’s favorite band?’” This philosophy started to take shape with his previous release, 2018’s The Skeptic. Now, with Factory Reset, he’s fully realized it.The writing came rather unexpectedly. Tilian began putting words down just a few weeks after the COVID-19 pandemic forced California to go into lockdown, in March 2020. He had planned on touring with his band Dance Gavin Dance, until—like the rest of us—he was stuck at home. And more to the point, he was alone. The Clearwater, Florida, native has always worked as a part of a larger unit since forming his first band in Tampa in 2007. Even as a solo artist he frequently collaborates, most recently with Marigolds+Monsters and Travis Barker on 2020’s “Falling Out of Rhythm” single. But in forced isolation, the songs began to flow. He decided to write, record, and produce the album himself, eventually remotely bringing in drummer/frequent collaborator Kris Crummett to help button it up. Having full creative control allowed Tilian to experiment more than ever. This maverick mindset colors Tilian’s reflections on his 2020 experiences—including meditative trips to the desert, life-changing psychedelic revelations, and an unsettling amount of death all around him. Religious, otherworldly, and metaphysical imagery pepper his lyrics, fueling both the heavy moments and a sudden sense of light and purpose that arrives toward the end. Factory Reset is both highly personal and wholly universal—who wouldn’t want to press restart on everything at this point? We want to hear from you! Interview with Olivia Morreale
We had the pleasure of interviewing Olivia Morreale over Zoom video! Los Angeles-based artist/songwriter/producer Olivia Morreale released her new EP, ‘SPACE DREAMS.’ The 4-track project includes previous singles, “NO ANSWER,” “PARASOMNIA” and “Another Moon,” as well as a brand new track titled “Matter of Time.”Created in close collaboration with fellow songwriter and producer Eli Koskoff, Olivia Morreale’s ‘SPACE DREAMS’ EP is an electrifying listen from start to finish. Olivia revolts against genre limitations, drawing from a myriad of influences ranging from classic jazz to electronica, alt-R&B to 70s-era funk, and soul to bedroom pop, while still crafting a unique soundscape all of her own. Lyrically, the EP examines the ways in which escapism can be accessed through imagination and dreams, mirroring the soothing, dreamy production that underscores each song. “The overarching theme of dreams allowed us to explore through music those deeper subconscious thoughts that are sometimes difficult to address in everyday life and to create a space for exploration and imagination," Olivia says.ABOUT OLIVIA MORREALE:New York-raised Olivia Morreale started her musical education as a teen sneaking into underground jazz clubs in New York City. She'd grown up listening to all the jazz greats — Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, etc. — but it wasn’t until she saw the music come to life on stage that she realized the true collaborative and transformative nature of music. At the age of eighteen, Olivia relocated to LA to attend USC’s Thornton School of Music to study pop and jazz. Throughout college, Olivia’s distinctive, ethereal vocals led to numerous gigs as a hired gun — she toured as a background singer for Engelbert Humperdinck and featured as a star vocalist on Jason “Spicy G” Goldman’s Hypnotized EP.Now, melding her jazz background with her immersion in Los Angeles's pop utopia, Olivia has created her own dreamy, synth-infused sound that combines colorful lyric imagery, deliberate instrumental hooks, and smooth vocalsWe want to hear from you! Interview with Emanuel
We had the pleasure of interviewing Emanuel over Zoom video! One of the most anticipated debut R&B albums of the past year, Emanuel’s full-length project ALT THERAPY has been unveiled to the world today via Motown Records & Universal Music Canada. Before the world experienced moments of great upheaval and change this past year, an unknown new artist in Canada, a son of Ethiopian immigrants, had unknowingly written music that was prophetic to the times. His debut single, the emotionally stirring “Need You”, was released as the global pandemic struck, resonating with people around the world who were forced into isolation. Months later, when the brutal killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Trayvon Martin sparked a worldwide reckoning of systemic racism and racial inequality, Emanuel offered “Black Woman” to the world -his moving ode of reconciliation that honors the majesty of Black women. Last month, as vaccines were distributed and possibility began to take the shape of reality, Emanuel shared his prayer for the future with the release of “Worldwide”. Now, during the week of Juneteenth and one year after the release of his debut EP Session 1: Disillusion, Emanuel celebrates freedom, growth and love with ALT THERAPY, his full-length contribution to the “renaissance of beautiful black art in the world.”ALT THERAPY is a journey. A narrative of discovering a deep self-awareness and celebrating personal growth, Emanuel’s debut album is the testament of a young man in the process of becoming a great man.A collection of 12 songs, ALT THERAPY is home to Emanuel’s two EPs released in 2020, Session 1: Disillusion (nominated for the2021 Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year JUNO Award) and Session 2: Transformation, as well as six additional songs: the manifestation mantra “Worldwide”, the revelation of new love on “Pillows”, the emotional plea of “I Need a Doctor”, the inner reckoning on “Detention”, the discovery of authentic love on “I Been”, and the rare male R&B duet on “Hindsight” featuring fellow Toronto R&B artist Dylan Sinclair. Also released today is the visually striking official video for “Worldwide”, a song born out of Emanuel’s deep yearning to take his music, its message and energy, to people around the world while experiencing and absorbing the wisdom of many cultures. Directed by Kit Weyman and Executively Produced by Director X, the video is a visual depiction of Emanuel’s “Worldwide” manifestation mantra. Emanuel’s talent is indisputable. Discovered by Canadian hip-hop icon Kardinal Offishall, launched by global superstar Idris Elba, signed by legendary R&B record label Motown Records, honored with a JUNO Award nomination for his debut EP, and championed by fans, critics and industry partners alike, Emanuel is one of the most destined new voices in R&B.We want to hear from you! The Rugged Man, among others. The journey to Computers For The Hood was a long and arduous one for iNTeLL, as he was having creative burnout, in addition to ongoing stresses caused by the COVID pandemic. However, this road has led to the best work of his career so far. Computers For The Hood is a tight 11 track showcase of creative partner DLP's raw old school-influenced production that still has a modern flair perfect for 2021. The beatwork serves as the perfect canvas for iNTeLL to confidently lay down memorable bars, hooks, and stories that serve as a perfect homage to his home turf of Staten Island."A few years back, when I was still earning the respect of my peers, Young Dirty Bastard had reached out to me to appear with him for several shows. At one of the shows, I met my future wife Prema777 (who is featured on the track "Django Hardware") and at another, I met DLP," explains iNTeLL about the road that led him to Computers For The Hood."Shortly after that, DLP approached me about producing a collaboration record between myself and Young Dirty Bastard. I saw this as an opportunity to also include some of the other sons of Wu-Tang, so I reached out to a Method Man's son PXWER. We ended up laying down what would later become the track 'We Here Now.' At the beginning of 2021, DLP reached back out to me and wanted to record a possible EP together. However, I was at a point of exhaustion from creating and building the 2nd Generation WU brand in addition to being burnt out from 2020.""Suddenly though, an opportunity to work with Del tha Funkee Homosapien came up," iNTeLL recalls excitedly. "He is not only one of my lyrical mentors but one of the dopest emcees to exist, so I quickly signed on for that collab." Inspired by this initial pairing, he explored the possibility of gathering a veritable collection of features and collaborators that helped solidify Computers For The Hood."We ended up being able to secure verses from Method Man, Del, the Team Backpack champion Denzil Porter, Tahmell (son of Rakim), my second collaboration with Mickey Factz, Ruste Juxx, and the king of lyrical Horrorcore R.A. The anticipated new video features a fresh remixed remastered new version!! The new version was recently released with an official music video on all platforms!! "Red Bottoms And Lingerie" is a pivotal song for Monique Nikkole. A lot different from her classic R&B/Jazz roots and her first release “Say Yes” that put her on the map. This song was presented to her by her manager Michael Stemley. It was written by Ray Lavender and produced by C Scott / JHott Scott. Monique loved it and viewed it as a challenge! It was a total style flip. Short choppy cadence, more of “today’s” R&B sound. Monique, being the enigma that she is, did exactly what she always does. Made it her own and put her stamp on...letting her signature adlibs shine. The original version for this song dropped in January and has enjoyed early success! We want to hear from you! Interview with Tarah Who?
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tarah Who? over Zoom video! Tarah Who? well, “she” equals “they,” and “they’re” a power duo masterminded by grunge-punk front-woman Tarah Carpenter, who channels explosive emotionality into rousing anthems alongside drummer/backing vocalist Coralie Hervé. Tarah Who? are set to release their new single “Illusion of Freedom” co-produced by Jason Orme (guitarist for Alanis Morissette) and Tarah, following the success of their 2020 EP “64 Women.” This EP was dedicated to 64 women who were detained in an immigration detention center in downtown LA on November 19, 2014 alongside Tarah herself. This powerful theme of immigration is something that crosses over into Tarah Who?’s new single as she examines her relationship with immigration having grown up in France, and now living in Los Angeles. Tarah was born in France and began smashing away at the drums at just 14 years old, ignoring those around her who suggested she try her hand at a more “ladylike” musical pursuit. Willful, and somewhat stubborn, she honed her chops, forged her own creative path, and branched out to bass, guitar, singing, songwriting, and producing. After a fateful move to Los Angeles, Tarah made her solo debut as Tarah Who? at a warehouse party. It was a gig she found on Craigslist, and it proved to be the perfect opportunity to share the songs she had been writing privately. Soon after Tarah connecting with drummer Coralie Herve and this is when the current incarnation of Tarah Who? was born. Stay tuned to Tarah Who?’s socials (below) for more information on the release of “Illusion of Freedom” and what Tarah Who? has in store for 2021. We want to hear from you! Interview with Ruth B.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Ruth B. over Zoom video! 25-year-old multi-platinum Ethiopian-Canadian singer and songwriter Ruth B. is excited to share her new album Moments In Between, executive produced by Patrick Wimberly (Beyonce, Solange, Blood Orange, Ellie Goulding), on Downtown Records / The Orchard. Moments In Between is a raw emotional accounting of the anxieties and uncertainty Ruth faces as a woman in her mid-twenties, giving voice to her inner strife via warm vocals, shapeshifting textures, and hazy harmonies. The new album serves as the follow-up to Ruth’s gold-certified 2017 debut Safe Haven – a critically acclaimed release featuring “Lost Boy,” a Peter Pan-inspired piano ballad that went viral when she was still a teenager. Ruth made a number of unexpected breakthroughs when creating Moments In Between: from revelations of being scared to ask for help (“Princess Peach”) to reflections on self-growth (“Situation”) and romance (“Holiday”). On Moments In Between, Ruth pushes her musical and personal dynamic to a new level of boldness and sophistication, embracing her most beautifully strange impulses while delivering her most impactful work to date. From woozy R&B and pop beats to guitar driven tracks and folk-like reveries, the songs on Moments In Between showcase Ruth B.’s ability to seamlessly traverse a multitude of musical stylings, and will surely add to her 1.5 billion artist streams to date. Ruth B. credits her songwriting and storytelling abilities to her upbringing as the daughter of Ethiopian immigrants, listening to the music of her parents’ homeland alongside American icons like Stevie Wonder and Lauryn Hill. For this project, Ruth also worked with producers Justin Raisen (Angel Olsen, Santigold) and Doug Schadt (Maggie Rogers, Ashe) who encouraged her to dig deeper in the writing and recording process than she ever has before. “Writing songs has always been therapeutic for me,” says Ruth, “and I hope that hearing my songs helps other people in the same way. Whether they’re feeling lonely or heartbroken or happy, I want them to know that someone else understands what they’re going through.” Last month, Ruth B. announced her upcoming bespoke Global Digital Tour, in partnership with Moment House and sponsored by Music.com. Moment House is a premium digital live platform that connects artists and their core fans for global, elevated ticketed experiences — called Moments. Ruth will be hosting exclusive Moments for several different areas/regions: North & South America, Asia, Australia & New Zealand, and Europe, UK & Africa. Full dates below.
