How exactly does my mind operate against me when I’m trying to move forward? How do I stop it? Here are some examples of how this can impact you: See if you can relate to the overall situations I’m describing even if your facts are different. You’ve been the VP of your department in a large company for several years. You’re a little bored and can’t see a way to advance into higher levels of leadership and decision-making. Feeling unmotivated at not yourself. There’s a project that isn’t getting done. You feel overwhelmed. You’re waiting on others to give you info that is needed to complete it. It’s difficult to prioritize. You’re totally distracted by email. It’s uncomfortable to not constantly check email because everyone is expressing they need you. Your boss is overly critical to a point of it not being useful because it’s so harsh and picky. You’re not fully present at home and have a short temper. Episode 7: How to Strengthen Your Deception Detector
Laura Palmer, Founder and Chief Mindshifter of Bridgenosis, discusses the impact deception can have on our lives and businesses and what to do about it. She speaks from her experiences as a mental performance coach for mindful leaders and athletes. Many of her clients are highly perceptive people who can easily read others and even pick up on their emotions. Yet, they have experienced blind spots in their deception detecting capabilities. Maybe you can relate to some of these scenarios: Sometimes you don’t hear your inner-GPS going to off at all. Sometimes you hear it, but you don’t want to believe it, so you push it down. Sometimes you hear it but question it because you feel confused. Here are some examples of how this can impact you: If you run an organization, you may hire unreliable, unqualified or untrustworthy people. You may even allow in a sabotage type. If you step into a leadership role in a new organization, you may get manipulated by someone who is good at being the golden child to the right people and yet is actually sabotaging things. For partnerships or client selection, you may have a blind spot that leads you to engage when you should not. You may attract romantic partners and/or friends who deceive you into trusting them and then turn emotionally abusive. Debunking deception isn’t just about seeing through and avoiding people who are intentionally trying to deceive you. It is also about being able to trust yourself in all relationships. Even in your best relationships, there are times when your GPS guides you to say no, but if you betray your GPS, things will be rocky. Essentially you are deceiving yourself and them by not following your inner-voice, but it’s not as though there is malicious intent. This episode focuses more on the situations where you are unable to guard against untrustworthy people. In Episode 8, you will have a chance to reprogram these patterns. Episode 6: How guilt erodes your life & leadership capacity and what to do about it.
Laura Palmer of Bridgenosis, discusses a stealthy pattern that most leaders don't realize is at play or simply accept it because they either believe it so strongly or don't know how to change it. She also talks about how to reprogram. Here are some examples of how this deep-seated pattern is disrupting your leadership, life, and organization: (Hint: Perceptive, empathetic leaders struggle the most with this.) Scenario 1: You’re depleted at work; you can’t seem to get to the projects you consciously prioritize that you know are most important. People are constantly emailing, calling, walking into your office, or otherwise needing your attention. And, you’re responding to just about everyone of them. You may feel too tired to give your loved ones attention when you’re home. If you’re a CEO: Either or both your strategy time is on the backburner or you’re loosing sleep because you have to focus on this at night since your day is high-jacked. And, you’re employees are less productive because they aren’t totally focused and lack some confidence to do what is needed. Scenario 2: You’re employees/team isn’t getting everything done that is needed; they lack direction and aren’t taking the initiative you want them to take. Scenario 3: You have an employee (maybe a VP if you’re the CEO, someone on the team you manage or a work colleague that you must collaborate with) that does what he or she wants and even goes around you to get their way. They make it very difficult for you to stand your ground. You want to collaborate but this person isn’t meeting you half-way. They are the anti-collaborator doing it all on their own and making themselves irreplaceable. Scenario 4: You have trouble asking for money. This may be when you need to collect money from your clients who didn’t automatically pay your first invoice. This may be from investors who are essential to your company’s success. This may kick-in during a consultative sales call when it’s time to discuss rates and costs. Scenario 5: You’re in financial debt or you have a strong fear of going into debt and not having enough.
