When Boobs Attack: A Girlfriends' Guide to Breast Cancer
Jen and Stephanie wrote When Boobs Attack to provide information and hopefully a laugh to fellow people battling breast cancer. Jen and Stephanie went to high school together and then graduated and didn't talk for over 20 years. Then out of the blue their mothers, who still live in their hometown, spilled the beans that they were both battling breast cancer. Can you believe the coincidence? They were diagnosed within a month of each other and both finished active treatment in April of 2018! As they chatted about what treatments they each had coming up, it worked out great because Jen was the mastectomy expert and Stephanie was the chemo expert! Jen shared great boob pillows and Stephanie sent soft hats for the bald-times. Jen and Stephanie are currently writing the second book in the series. They are open very open about their diagnosis, treatments, side effects, and whatever you want to know in all of the gory details. They had so much fun with selecting the book and chapter titles - they really do think they are funny, please don't burst their bubble!

Healing - When A Nurse Becomes a Patient
“As an oncology nurse, I thought I knew cancer—knew it. When I was diagnosed with breast cancer myself, I realized I knew nothing at all about being a cancer patient: how terrifying having cancer is, and how lonely,” explains Theresa Brown, RN, a frequent contributor to The New York Times opinion pages, CNN.com, and the American Journal of Nursing. In her captivating 2015 New York Times bestseller, The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients’ Lives, Brown offered readers an eye-opening glimpse into a full day at her hospital’s cancer ward, providing a compassionate view inside the complex inner workings of our healthcare system and the individual struggles of her patients. Now, Brown has returned with an unprecedented look at this system from the viewpoint of a cancer patient she had never encountered: herself. In her new memoir, HEALING: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient, Brown tells her intensely personal story and presents an honest – and rare – look at struggling with the illness while navigating the maze of American health care from the unique standpoint of both a patient and a practitioner. But despite years working as an oncology and hospice nurse, Brown is constantly surprised by the lack of compassion she experiences during her treatment. Like the 4 million women in the U.S. who live with breast cancer, Brown deals with the challenges and frustrations that characterize our healthcare system. She also reflects on her time caring for patients. Did she treat them with the dignity and respect that she now craves? What could she have done to make other people’s suffering even a little bit easier? Answering these questions and more, Brown does something few practitioners ever do in print: she reevaluates her own role in this problematic system. Brown shows us up close a system that may offer advanced medicine but still lets people down, giving a candid critique that shows we can and should prioritize kindness over profit.

2Unstoppable: Improving Cancer Outcomes Through Exercise
2Unstoppable is a non-profit organization founded by two women, Michelle Stravitz and Ilana Gamerman, with a personal history of Breast Cancer and who realized the many benefits of staying active during and after treatment. They now want to help other women on their cancer journeys experience a better quality of life and improved outcomes through exercise. Although their personal cancer stories are different (and aren’t they all?) founders Michelle and Ilana each recognized the importance of moving, even during treatment. The doctors were clear, the research was clear, but, most importantly, they each realized that fitness, in any form, helps them feel less anxious, reduces stress, combats fatigue, minimizes and combats other side effects, and gives them more energy. Most of the time it was simply walking with a friend or doing gentle yoga together that provided their activity and gave them much-needed support. Michelle and Ilana know firsthand how difficult it is to summon the energy to be active during this time. Their friends were instrumental in keeping us moving!
