Welcome to Episode #119 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with members of the Milan-based collective Karu, Alberto Brutti and Andrea Di Nicolantonio. With their second full-length project now available through Italy's diverse Beat Machine Records, 'An Imaginary Journey' continues where its predecessor ('Kuru', 2020) left off, boasting a phenomenal and bold interpretation of contemporary jazz that draws from a wide array of influences from its tribal aesthetic mixed with electronica, spiritual jazz and hip-hop production. Comprised of band leader and double bassist Alberto Brutti, guitarist Andrea Di Nicolantonio, saxophonist Mario D’Alfonso and Cristiano Amici on drums, Karu create intricate soundscapes which relies heavily on improvisation and music created within that specific time and space. A live album released early in 2022, 'Live at Commerce', provides a thrilling insight into Karu's infectious live performances and spontaneous interplay between its closely-knit band members, and a cover of MF DOOM's 'One Beer' kicks the project off in spectacular fashion. Welcome to Episode #118 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with guitarist and founder of jazz trio, Wild Card, Clement Regert. With a core trio comprised of Regert, Hammond organist Andrew Noble and Sophie Alloway on drums, the trio get set to unveil their sixth studio album. Having initially played together in 2011 at a club where Regert hosted a residency, the chemistry proved undeniable and the trio have - thankfully - remained together ever since. With the brand new Wild Card album release due at the end of this month, 'Cabin 19 Fever' serves as a reflection of the extensive quarantine period brought on by a certain worldwide pandemic - with the majority of the album written and recorded separately, the circumstances would go on to open the doors to working with collaborators both old and new including Marcus Strickland, Rosie Turton, Binker Golding and Maurice Brown amongst ten other sensational names. While the inspired pairing of revered singer and songwriter, Deborah Jordan, alongside the boundless versatility of producer and musician Kieron "K15" Ifill for a whole album seemed too good to be true, this is actually a project that each of their respective roads had been converging towards for years. With a musical union that stretches as far back as Jordan's sophomore album release 'What You See' (2011), K15's immaculate production has become a firm staple within her music since having gone on to contribute remixes for 'Love From The Sun' and 'Amina' as well as four staggering productions on Jordan's monumental 'See in the Dark' album. As much of a meeting of the musical minds as this project is, the album undertakes a deeply spiritual exploration on what it is to be human. Welcome to Episode #107 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which this week sees Imran connect with Chris Bestwick and Kishon Khan from Archie the Goldfish. Headed up by guitarist Bestwick and trumpeter Graeme Flowers, the duo set about this new musical venture during the pandemic lockdown in 2020 resulting in their debut 'Hidden Depths' released through Ropeadope Records that same year. UK-born but now residing in Helsinki, Chris Bestwick boasts an incredible resume that has seen him perform alongside revered names including James Taylor and Ali Slimani as well as creating music as part of the Finnish collective Timeforsoul, not to mention his releases as a solo artist in his own right. Bestwick's credentials are matched by his Archie the Goldfish collaborator, Graeme Flowers, who can not only boast serving as a member of the funk & soul band Down to the Bone but also chalking up performances with the Brand New Heavies and Kyle Eastwood among countless more names. The sublime five-track, instrumental EP presented some inspired compositions that has since paved the way for even more music under "Archie" umbrella. Last year's 'Water & Light' EP saw the inclusion of vocalist Nadia Basurto amongst the band's line-up along with the incredibly versatile Kishon Khan on Rhodes and a new label home with the hotbed of global grooves, Funkiwala Records. As co-founder of Funkiwala along with trombonist Justin Thurgur, Khan is a boundlessly talented musician and composer in his own right having performed with an array of artists and bands as well as having released a slew of projects as founder of Lokkhi Terra. Welcome to Episode #101 of the Blue-in-Green:PODCAST which sees Imran and Rhonda catch something of an impromptu conversation to discuss their respective Covid situations from different parts of the world and, on a more positive note, to discuss Rhonda's visit to the 2021 Monterey Jazz Festival.
