Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the guest on the podcast. HAPPY 2021!! Welcome to the new and improved podcast. Okay, maybe not improved but still great guests for the new year. Justin Atherton and I had a great conversation. I was very proud of how this episode went because Justin has so many great tips for many people of different walks of life, but there is common ground.  I have to tell you that when he talked about "trigger words" that was a huge eye-opener for me. It is very true how powerful words are. For example here are the Seven Universal Emotional Words: Happiness Sadness Fear Anger Discuss Contempt Surprise These words can be used in different emotional settings and Justin explains how and why they can trigger different emotions. My biggest takeaway is to never tell someone to "calm down". BIO In dealing with countless high stress and volatile situations Justin learned that integrity―in every aspect―is the most important factor in whether a man succeeds or fails. With over 14 years of Law Enforcement experience in SWAT, Investigations, Officer Training, and Leadership roles, Justin developed and shared tactics and techniques that helped forge the next generation of leaders.   After departing the SWAT team, he launched Confidence Unchained, a company that teaches these same leadership principles to men from any walk of life. From business owners, CEO’s and entrepreneurs, Justin has helped men across a broad range of industries build their own Peak Performance and regain their EDGE. Now, detailing the mind-set and principles that enable Detectives and SWAT teams to accomplish the most difficult missions, Confidence Unchained shows how to apply them to any man, family, or organization. The three pillars of the program focus on specific areas such as Mental Toughness, Emotional Fortitude, and Health Awareness, explaining what they are, why they are important, and how to implement them in any environment. Powerful coaching and direct application, Confidence Unchained revolutionizes personal consulting and challenges men everywhere to fulfill their ultimate purpose and keep their EDGE. BEHIND THE GLASS PRE-ORDER: My Dads Advice At 5:04 AM www.mydadsadvicebook.com   Before we start, I need your help.  Please let others know about the newsletter. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the guest on the podcast. Hello, from the penalty box, a little hockey humor there. Today I am so excited to talk with the Columnist for USA Hockey Magazine, Christie Casciano Burns. Yes, we are talking about hockey in July. If you are a hockey parent, you will understand that the season never really ends.   Christie's Bio: Emmy nominated veteran anchor, and author Christie Casciano is a graduate of Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications. After reporting for WROC-TV in Rochester, Christie was eager to return home to her big Italian family in Syracuse to join the NewsChannel 9 team and the station she grew up watching. Christie anchors NewsChannel 9 First at 4:00, NewsChannel 9 at 5:00, 5:30, 6:00, and Eleven at 11:00 with Rod Wood. Christie has covered many important stories that have impacted the Central New York community and developed NewsChannel 9's OnTheLookout.net, a crime franchise that has been recognized statewide for its efforts to help keep neighborhoods safe. Each week Christie profiles wanted criminals, and her reporting has helped police solve hundreds of cases. She is the recipient of numerous community and professional awards, including the Syracuse Press Club's Professional Standards Award, and received a proclamation from the Onondaga County Executive naming December 29, 2012, as Christie Casciano Day. Christie's investigative series on the heroin epidemic earned her an Emmy nomination and the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award. Christie is a proud hockey mom and has written three hockey-themed books; Haunted Hockey in Lake Placid, The Puck Hog, and My Kids Play Hockey, which has sold to hockey parents across the country. Her monthly hockey mom columns have become required reading for the half-million readers of USA Hockey Magazine. She also teamed up with NewsChannel 9's Lou Gulino and Tim Fox to write "Syracuse Television History." She also had the privilege of flying with the Thunderbirds in an F-16 Fighter Jet and pulled 9-G's! https://www.amazon.com/-/e/B004AO7TXI  Books;  My Kids Play Hockey Haunted Hockey in Lake Placid The Puck Hog      When the guest says to you, "that's been an hour?" I take that as a compliment. I was able to hear from Christie's point of view about being a hockey parent. At one part of our conversation, she started to interview me. That was wonderful. What a delight Chrisite was, and I hope she comes back on.     Tommy Maloney is the Executive producer and host of the podcast Blending The Family, where you can find on Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Spotify, and Stitcher Radio.    Tommy has spoken at TEDx, Ignite Fort Collins, and Keynote Speaker at Everything Dad Convention. EP 183 Our Happy Divorce Authors Nikki DeBartolo and Benjamin Heldfond REPLAY
OUR HAPPY DIVORCE PRE-ORDER: My Dads Advice At 5:04 AM www.mydadsadvicebook.com Before we start, I need your help.  Please let others know about the newsletter. If you or someone you know needs coaching, please click here and it will take you to the coaching page. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the podcast's guest. Welcome to this week's episode with the authors of the book "Our Happy Divorce" Nikki Debartolo and Benjamin Heldfond. After speaking with Nikki and Ben, I have learned that there is a better way to co-parent.  We talked about how to co-parent during the Coronavirus. You might be shocked at how Nikki and Ben stepped up to blend their family with having each other's spouses and kids under one roof. They even live Seven houses from each other. While we were talking, I mentioned to Nikki and Ben about Erika Englund from episode 160 and how she and her family came up with celebrating after her divorce the day she got married to her now-former husband.  Erika created "Familyversary."  Nikki talked about how her husband Chad came to their son Asher to get permission to ask his mom to marry him. Bios:   Nikki DeBartolo understands the impact of a loving family and how it creates a solid foundation for the future for a person navigating through life, love, marriage, and motherhood. As Co-Founder of Our Happy Divorce, a service that offers guidance on creating a post-divorce happy, modern family and Author of "Our Happy Divorce - How Ending Our Marriage Brought Us Together, DeBartolo has made it her mission to help families in every way possible.   Having grown up as a member of the iconic San Francisco 49ers football family, the values she learned on the field from a young age, have helped shape who she is today. As Executive Vice President of DeBartolo Holdings and the DeBartolo Family Foundation, Nikki has made it her mission to give back to her community in every way possible, from supporting local grassroots movements to national charities, she has been part of multiple initiatives, giving back to her community, including, Metropolitan Ministries, Meal on Wheels, The Boys and Girls Club, The Humane Society of Tampa Bay, and the HCSO Freddie Solomon Christmas Event.   She is proud of the accomplishments that the DeBartolo Family Foundation has been able to share with nonprofits and enjoys when those moments come to life, making the Tampa Bay community – where she lives with her husband, Chad, son, Asher, and their two dogs – feel more like a family.    Ben Heldfond understands the detriment divorce can cause in the lives of children, as his parents’ divorce instilled a deep commitment to doing better for his children one day. As Co-Founder of Our Happy Divorce, a service that offers guidance on creating a post-divorce happy, modern family and Author of "Our Happy Divorce - How Ending Our Marriage Brought Us Together,” Heldfond has made it his mission to help families during the turmoil of divorce can become.   Heldfond is also the owner of Heldfond Holdings, LLC, a company that invests in a wide variety of companies, including real estate, private equity, and venture capital. His corporate career began more than three decades ago during his real estate career, where he played an integral part in the company’s development acquisitions and diversified investing transactions. He has always had a passion for helping others and since then has been involved with several non-profit organizations; focused on addiction recovery, including, Facing Addiction w/NCADD, Road Recovery, Phoenix House, Young People in Recovery, and American Cancer Society Tampa CEO Council with a focus on Governance, Finance, and Strategic Planning.     He is a graduate of The University of California, Berkeley, with a Bachelor of Science degree in African American History and Business Administration. Outside of the office, Ben is an investor, board member, philanthropist, sports enthusiast, and co-host for a local radio show.  He resides in South Tampa with his wife, Nadia, and three kids, Asher, Isabella, and Jackson.   LINKS!! EP 182 Jide Gamu iFOURcore App Founder replay
Do You Believe In Love At First Sight? Before we start, I need your help.  Please let others know about the newsletter. If you or someone you know needs coaching, please click here, and it will take you to the coaching page. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the podcast's guest. PRE-ORDER: My Dads Advice At 5:04 AM www.mydadsadvicebook.com My guest Jide Gamu, is the founder of the app IFOURcore. We will talk about not just the origin of the app but how it could save your marriage. My question to you is, who taught you how to date? Think about this. As a parent, what is our role to help our kids? Jide began his career while working for the Colorado Alliance for Reform in Education (C.A.R.E.); on behalf of school choice, Jide helped develop the Alliance for Equal Opportunity in Education to promote school choice for students. Shortly after that, he started his first business, C.O.R.E. (Colorado youth – Overcoming adversity – Recognizing their potential – Empowering one another). Through his work with C.O.R.E. Jide developed a community program called BarberShop Talk, an introspective gathering of men from 8 to 80 who met in a barbershop to discuss community issues. BarberShop Talk grew to include a television broadcast hosted by Jide and later produced a spin-off for women called “A Woman’s Worth.” In 2005, Jide started “Youth Tree,” a community redevelopment organization comprised of young individuals whose potential for excellence exceeded their age. He also co-hosted a radio show on KLDC 800 called “Anointed Word on the Street.” Topics included the impact of growing up in a fatherless home. In 2006, after more than 700 hours of training, Jide helped open the first Educo Gym in America. His practice has taken him as far as Sardinia, Italy, Paradise Island, Bahamas, and Belize. In early 2008 Jide was elected as the 2nd Vice-Chair of the Aurora Human Relations Commission and was also awarded the “2007 Activist Award” by the City of Aurora. April 29th of 2008, Jide joined the U.S. Army. He conquered a 12-month deployment with the 2nd Brigade 4th Infantry Division to Mosul & Kirkuk, Iraq, in the fall of 2008. In the summer of 2010, he committed to the 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), achieving one of his many “adventurous goals” by becoming an Airborne Trooper. Shortly after that, Jide was selected to work in Washington DC, where he currently resides. With his daughter Leilani, Jide is endeavoring to bring about positive change in his new community.   Links: Website: iFOURcore.com I.G.: @iFOURcore     Tommy Maloney is the Executive producer and host of the podcast Blending The Family, where you can find Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Spotify, and Stitcher Radio.    Tommy has spoken at TEDx, Ignite Fort Collins, and Keynote Speaker at Everything Dad Convention. EP 181 Erika Anne Englund (repost)
WELCOME TO FAMILYVERSARY   My new book "My Dad's Advice At 5:04 Am" can now be pre-ordered: WWW.mydadsadvicebook.com   Before we start, I need your help.  Please let others know about the newsletter. If you or someone you know needs coaching, please click here and it will take you to the coaching page. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 of Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the guest on the podcast.   My guest on this week's podcast is Erika Englund. She has a positive way of celebrating her divorce. I am not sure how many of you could spend time with your former spouse? Erika is a tech founder and the world has changed in the years since my divorce back in 2008. With the explosion of Apps, it is at times a better way to co-parent and even communicate with your former. Erik opens up by telling her story of how she never won a case as a litigator. However, it did set her up for a path where she is much happier (nachos and whale watching became her "ah-ha" moment) today. Erika's bio goes a little something like this: Erika Anne Englund is an attorney, mediator, law professor, and legal tech founder. Now practicing exclusively out of court, she has mediated over five thousand hours of successful divorce resolutions. As a single parent of two young children, Erika experiences the joys and challenges of divorce life on a daily basis, happily co-parenting with her former husband (most of the time – she’s not perfect). Erika has an unwavering belief that divorcing people deserve better than the current court system provides. It is her life’s goal to work in the legal, educational, and technological fields in order to effectuate this change.  A few weeks before the divorce finalized, we started celebrating “familyversary,” turning our wedding date into something happy, rather than leaving it as a reminder of something sad. There is a great story about how the first familyversary came about (magic? Coincidence? Divine intervention?). We’ll be celebrating our 16th familyversary (2020) next week. EP 179 Living with Regrets
Do you have regrets in life? You should. There is nothing wrong with them. Unless...You did not learn from them. Tonight I was working on my new book and in chapter four "Stay At Home Dad," I wrote about making many, MANY mistakes as a parent. I was the prime caregiver when Connor, my son was born. Learning from your regrets can help strengthen your relationship with your kids. For example, admitting when you are wrong is a great lesson.   In the book, I talk about how Connor ended up at Urgent Care, and because of that event, I felt like a failure as a dad. Regrets are fine as long as you learn from them and do not dwell on them. Tommy Maloney is the Executive producer and host of the podcast Blending The Family, where you can find Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Spotify, and Stitcher Radio.    Tommy has spoken at TEDx, Ignite Fort Collins, and Keynote Speaker at Everything Dad Convention. EP 174 Jide Gamu iFOURcore App Founder
My guest Jide Gamu, is the founder of the app IFOURcore. EP 172 World Suicide Prevention Day
#RUOK   Before we start, I need your help. Today is World Suicide Prevention Day. I am lucky to be alive. Why? I have attempted to take my life several times.  I wanted to share three ideas to help you or loved ones who struggle with the feelings of depression. Today I came across this link that had some great information: National Suicide Prevention Lifeline – If you feel you or someone you know may need emotional support, please visit the Lifeline’s website at suicidepreventionlifeline.org for helpful resources or call 1-800-273-TALK (8255). The Lifeline is free, confidential, and available to everyone in the U.S. You do not have to be suicidal to call the Lifeline. The National Alliance on Mental Illness Warmline – Call or text 775-241-4212. The NAMI Warmline is a stigma-free, non-crisis, phone service you can call or text to speak one-on-one with a NAMI Western Nevada CARES (Community Assistance for Recovery through Education and Support) operator. The Warmline is staffed by trained peers in recovery, who provide support to peers by telephone. The Warmline provides confidential support when we want to talk to someone. The Warmline gives you a peer’s perspective on how to find support in the community by phone, text, or video. Knowing someone cares can motivate us to carry on in recovery when there is anxiety.   My hope is this podcast can help others along with this information above. EP 170 Tell Your Kids You Love Them Each Day
TELL YOUR KIDS YOU LOVE THEM EACH DAY Before we start, I need your help.  Please let others know about the newsletter. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the podcast's guest. In this episode, I want to give you the most important tip from my book "25 Tips For Divorced Dads." I feel that as parents forget to just tell our kids that we love them. The world can seem moving fast and before you know it, poof, the kids are out of the house. For me personally, I have struggled with having regrets when it comes to my son Connor. I know it is not too late but my thought is that as he was growing up I was not a good enough father to him. More on that in a blog post. I do try letting him know that I love him even though I do not see him on a regular basis. Tell your kids you love them. Even in front of their friends.  I will admit that for my oldest bonus daughter Betsy, it is not easy to say. I think that will be a follow up podcast. My other bonus daughter Becca, we have a pretty cool relationship and saying I love you to each other is very natural. Bottom line, just say it. #BLM   Chris Williams message needs to be heard again. Why can't the violence stop? Why does each day have another Black and Brown male or female killed only because of their skin color? Please share this episode to others who need to hear this. My hope is that next time Chris comes on we can talk sports, beers, and family.    Thank you for support this podcast,   Tommy

EP 168 Get a Webcam
Tip number three is to get a webcam. Before we start, I need your help.  Please let others know about the newsletter. If you or someone you know needs coaching, please click here and it will take you to the coaching page. My goal is to get the podcast in the top 100 Apple podcasts, and I can only do this with your help. Please leave a rating and review, share the link to the podcast with your social media followers, and support the podcast's guest. Welcome to episode number 168 and it is a bit of a blast from the past. When I first wrote this book "25 Tips for Divorced Dads" it was at a time when having a webcam was not too common. I was attending a Toastmasters meeting when one of the members asked to talk after the meeting. He knew how I was coaching other dads after divorce. He wanted ideas on how to stay connected with his kids since they lived a couple of states over. I told him to get a webcam for both the kids and himself. This was back in 2009. He liked that idea but he wanted to make sure his former spouse would agree to let the kids use the camera. When it comes to co-parenting, egos need to be pushed out and to only think about the kid's needs first.  Here we are in 2020 where the word of the year is "ZOOM." Video technology has changed and maybe for divorced parts it has changed for the better. You can Facetime your kids or send a video message right off your phone. Staying connected with your kids is better now with tech.    Is there a topic you want me to cover in future podcasts?   Tommy Maloney is the Executive producer and host of the podcast Blending The Family, where you can find Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Spotify, and Stitcher Radio.    Tommy has spoken at TEDx, Ignite Fort Collins, and Keynote Speaker at Everything Dad Convention.
