Basketball by Association: Last-Minute 2013-14 Western Conference Predictions
Good luck figuring out the 2013-14 Western Conference, then feeling confident about it. As wide-open as it's ever been at the top, the returning champion San Antonio Spurs still feel like the de facto pick, but their challengers are many and mighty. The Oklahoma City Thunder get Russell Westbrook back and are still plenty talented, if also a little top-heavy and predictable these days. The Golden State Warriors and LA Clippers reinforced their rosters in a big way, but must prove they can "win the big one." The Houston Rockets look great on paper, but have a lot of chemistry to build in the meantime. The Memphis Grizzlies are always present. Yet do they have that "extra gear" yet? And it goes on and on... Think it gets easier figuring out the final two or three postseason seeds? Think again. The Minnesota Timberwolves, LA Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers are all reasonable choices. So who's in and who's out, and where are they winding up? NBA Lead Writer Josh Martinjoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. We'll preview the key storylines for the entire conference while predicting the outcome and final standings, and we're especially interested to hear your take on the situation in the comments section! Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Complete Eastern Conference Predictions
The Miami Heat are no longer alone as the class of the Eastern Conference. Yes, they're the defending champs and favorites to three-peat for a very good reason. No, they probably don't even need the No. 1 seed and homecourt advantage to accomplish their playoff goals. On the other hand, the Indiana Pacers have already gone toe-to-toe with Miami the past two years, and the matchup only appears to be gettingmore difficult with each passing season. Then, Derrick Rose is back for a reinforced Chicago Bulls team. The Brooklyn Nets are scary on paper and could be even more so in reality. The New York Knicks and rest of the playoff field are as deep as the conference has seen in a decade. So who's in and who's out, and where are they winding up? NBA Lead WriterJonathan Wassermanjoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Northwest Division NBA Season Preview
Stocked with some of the NBA's most up-and-coming teams, along with one of its recent title contenders, the Northwest Division may be in considerable flux this season. The Utah Jazz are rebuilding the right way: that means losing a lot of games while also giving intriguing youngsters copious minutes. An epically talented 2014 draft and free agency class await, as do much better days. In the middle, the Portland Trail Blazers and Minnesota Timberwolves are deeper and more dangerous than ever before, but their real problem (health) still looms as an ongoing concern. With the Denver Nuggets undergoing radical internal changes however, there's every reason to believe the door is open for a lower playoff berth if the right team can capitalize. Then, there's the Oklahoma City Thunder, long masters of the Central playground. But is their supremacy slipping just a bit? Their win-now starting lineup is both waiting on Russell Westbrook's return and their "developmental" bench to do just that. They face a tougher climb than ever before, but few teams have more youth, upside and sheer talent than the Thunder do. NBA Featured Columnist Zach Buckleyjoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. We'll preview the key storylines for the entire division while predicting the outcome and final standings, and we're especially interested to hear your take on the situation in the comments section! Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Southwest Division NBA Season Preview
The NBA's most competitive from top to bottom, the Southeast Division looks tougher than ever for 2013-14. Near the floor, (there really is no basement here), the New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks underwent some pretty massive offseason roster changes. Will the respective young guns or old hands get into the playoff fringe? Whoever first discovers their chemistry and ensures real depth is likely to have the upper hand. The Memphis Grizzlies always seem to be overlooked, but they're sure things for the postseason due to their stellar starting five, gritty style and improved depth. Is it all enough to stave off their rivals in the conference arms race? What to make then of the new-fangled Houston Rockets? Flush with talent, a high ceiling and just as many questions, they're prime competitors for whatever the Grizzlies and San Antonio Spurs have previously owned outright. Yet every time one questions the Spurs, they outpace expectations and remain a contender. So who ensures they can do it again? NBA National Featured Columnist Dan Favalejoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. We'll preview the key storylines for the entire division while predicting the outcome and final standings, and we're especially interested to hear your take on the situation in the comments section! Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Central Division NBA Season Preview
This might be the NBA's toughest division to figure out and predict. The only certainty is that it will be an absolute brawl all season long. Where last year the Cleveland Cavaliers and Detroit Pistons were clearly in the basement, while the middling Milwaukee Bucks were nothing more than postseason roadkill, can all three teams now be so differentand better at the same time? Sorting out which one or two make the playoffs is exceedingly difficult since they all portend to be in the mix. And then there's the Indiana Pacers and Chicago Bulls. Both get stars back from injury (Danny Granger and Derrick Rose, respectively). Both have new-and-improved supporting casts, true front-line and wing size, balanced starting lineups and enough defensive grit to give the Miami Heat fits. Both have previously done so, while also winning the Central Division, in alternating fashion the past couple years. So which team has the advantage against the defending champs? And which one the upper hand against each other? As mirror images style-wise, those answers for the Bulls and Pacers might not be one and the same. NBA National Featured Columnist Grant Hughesjoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Southeast Division NBA Season Preview
Unicorns, the Easter Bunny and parity. None of them can be found in the NBA's Southeast Division. The Miami Heat's vice grip on their regional rivals has lasted the better part of a decade, even before the Big 3 assembled. While equality is unlikely again this year, can the other teams break the glass ceiling at all or level the playing field even a little? More importantly, can the Heat three-peat despite a noticeably tougher conference field? Long captains of the Southeast's "middle ground", the Atlanta Hawks are sure to be joined by the Washington Wizards. Both teams should remain in playoff contention, but with the Eastern Conference postseason dance card quickly filling up, will there be enough spots for either when the music stops? At the bottom, the Charlotte Bobcats and Orlando Magicwillbebetter this season, but by how much? And which one is further along in their rebuilding cycles? NBA National Featured ColumnistAdam Fromaljoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Atlantic Division NBA Season Preview
The NBA's Atlantic Division was ruled by the Empire State last year, but who can also grab the Big Apple? The Brooklyn Nets made a valiant run for the top but were thwarted by the crosstown rival New York Knicks. While both teams underwent significant roster additions this offseason, the quality and quantity of Brooklyn's reinforcements means the hunter and prey situation has likely reversed. In the middle, the Toronto Raptors remain an intriguing and frustrating mix of overall talent and question marks in the chemistry and depth departments. The Boston Celtics are beginning a full rebuild while still professing a desire to win, while the Philadelphia 76ers have had no qualms about tanking openly. So who wins the division and New York City this year, and is either team really true title contenders? Where do the Raptors fit into the hierarchy, and can they stay in the postseason picture at all? When will the rebuilding teams be ready to get back in the game? NBA Lead Writer Jonathan Wasserman joins assistant editors Ethan Norof and Joel C. Cordes for the latest episode of Basketball by Association. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Pacific Division NBA Season Preview
The NBA's Pacific Division went through plenty of change last year, but is that overhaul now the new normal? With the once highly touted L.A. Lakers, as the division's traditional powerhouse, reeling into rebuilding mode, the Golden State Warriors and L.A. Clippers are usurping the throne in convincing fashion. But where the Clippers had the better regular season record and the division title, the Warriors had more postseason success. So who wins the chip this year, and are either team really true title contenders? Where do the Lakers fit into the hierarchy, and can they stay in the postseason picture at all? At the bottom, are the Sacramento Kings finally turning the corner back to respectability and a positive future? How much longer before the Phoenix Suns can say the same? NBA Lead Writer Josh Martinjoins assistant editorsEthanNorofand Joel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Charlotte Bobcats Season Preview
The Charlotte Bobcats will no longer by the worst team in basketball. That in and of itself is quite an accomplishment, all things considered. But is it possible that this group actually has the makings of an identity, core and cohesive plan? Signing Al Jefferson to a huge free agency contract may have seemed shortsighted, but this franchise desperately needed a foundation who could put the rock in the hoop. Drafting Cody Zeller was head-scratching, considering who was still left on the board, but he is NBA ready and will be yet another solid asset. With Kemba Walker, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Gerald Henderson and Bismack Biyombo all looking like reasonably talented pros, the ceiling isn't enormously high yet for Charlotte, but it's attractive enough as they crawl out of their cellar years. There's a lot of work to be done in next offseason's Draft and free agency class, but Bobcats fans no longer need be despondent. NBA Featured Columnist Zach Buckley joins assistant editors Ethan Norof and Joel C. Cordes for the latest episode of Basketball by Association. We look at the best and the worst of the Bobcats offseason, along with the biggest questions heading into 2014. We'll also detail Charlotte's keys to a successful year while predicting its final position in the standings.   Want more team-by-team NBA season previews? Find the latest here. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Portland Trail Blazers Season Preview
One of the NBA's best-kept secrets, are the Portland Trail Blazers ready for the big time this season? Last year's starting lineup was truly stellar. Damian Lillard, Wes Matthews, Nic Batum, LaMarcus Aldridge and newcomer Robin Lopez all are safe bets to be a top act again as well. However, the bench needed (and underwent)major work. Mo Williams, CJ McCollum, Dorell Wright and Thomas Robinson now arrive as reinforcements. Will it be enough? Can Lillard, Aldridge and Batum all play at an All-Star level? Will they have enough gas down the stretch and collective firepower when it matters most? Portland promises to be an exciting and easily-likable team again this year, but does a tough Western Conference still make their playoff hopes a long shot? NBA Featured Columnist Zach Buckleyjoins assistant editors Ethan Norof andJoel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. We look at the best and the worst of the Blazers' offseason, along with the biggest questions heading into 2014. Basketball by Association: 2013-14 Memphis Grizzlies Season Preview
A basketball powerhouse that no one seems to remember until facing them, the Memphis Grizzlies have quietly bulked up again. With one of the league's toughest starting fives in Mike Conley, Tony Allen, Tayshaun Prince, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, the Grizzlies have been able to tangle with anyone and everyone. Yet, the defensive juggernaut has long struggled to match outside firepower and overall athleticism with the elite. By adding Kosta Koufos, Jamaal Franklin and Mike Miller to incumbents Ed Davis, Quincy Pondexter and Jerryd Bayless, Memphis is banking on a stronger bench with deeper range. They'll need it, as their Western Conference den mates are loaded for bear after this offseason. Can the Grizzlies score more while keeping their lock-down identity? Do they finally have the depth to withstand regular-season injuries? Is Zach Randolph part of the immediate and long-term future? Is Memphis really still among the NBA's title-chasing powers? Grizzlies Featured Columnist Tom Firmejoins assistant editorsJoel C.Cordesfor the latest episode ofBasketball by Association. We look at the best and the worst of the Grizzlies' offseason, along with the biggest questions heading into 2014. We'll also detail Memphis' keys to a successful year while predicting its final position in the standings. Want more team-by-team NBA season previews? Find the latest here.
