Relief from Painful Periods and PCOS with Lara Briden
Do you have painful periods? How about irregular periods? Have you taken birth control to "regulate" your periods? Are you a partner of someone who experiences issues with periods? Lara Briden is on the show with me today. She has over 25 years experience working with women and issues with menstruation. She has followed the cutting edge research dealing with periods. She's on the show today to give us a sneak peak into her upcoming presentation called "Ovulation Matters" at the  (RMSS) on November 16. In this episode we talk about the evidence in research that has been coming out. Some common misconceptions, issues with hormonal birth control, what actions you can take with nutrition to address some common symptoms and the topics she'll be covering at the RMSS. This is such an important topic because 3.75 billion people in the world are female bodied individuals. Almost all of them experience menstruation. It is such a common experience and has historically been under-researched and many women suffer from PCOS, endometriosis, irregular and painful periods. Frequently told that it's normal and to just "suffer through it." Lara is here to share the news that it does not need to be something to suffer through. This episode is brought to you by the rocky mountain sex summit. Teens, Snap Chat and Teaching Boundaries with Dr. Holly Richmond
What do I do about Snap Chat and the possibility of my teen sending nudes? If masturbation is against my beliefs how do I bring it up with my teen while following my values? How do I get my teen to respect boundaries? Dr Holly Richmond is on the show with me again, this time to address boundaries with teens. We are talking implicit and explicit communication in the family, how that affects teen behavior, why the "lockdown" parenting style is problematic and ways to teach your teen boundaries. This is such an important topic because of the amount of teens who have access to electronic devices now days and how demanding action from a teen can be as easy as telling a baby to stop crying. Dr Holly Richmond and I explore the conversations to be having with your children right now to prep them to become teens who know boundaries, set their own boundaries and respect boundaries. We also explore methods to approach masturbation and values and helpful conversation starters when approaching teens about sexual health. If you find this episode supportive I encourage to think of someone who could use this episode and share it with them. We’re all growing together in these discussions and you sharing this may be the support they need to start these important conversations with their teens. Sex in Long-Term Religious Relationships with Earthly Parents
What have you been told sex would feel like for the first time? How do I keep novelty in a committed long-term relationship? What kind of sex life do I want my child to have when they are adults?   Earthly parents are the author of the book “And It was very good” one member of Earthly Parents joins me today to explore these questions and address many of the myths that people believe about sex.   Hey everyone, This is Braxton Dutson welcome to Birds and Bees Podcast    This interview is unique because we will be speaking to individuals who identify themselves with a more orthodox religious belief. While his book is directed toward the Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The discussion is relevant to anyone who is planning on being in a committed relationship while participating in religion.   As for the last question, “What kind of sex life do I want my child to have when they are adults” We help parents explore this question for themselves as a tool to guide conversations with young adults as they look toward their future relationships.   The authors have generously offered their book to The Birds and Bees Podcast listeners for free. What Your Teens Don't Know About STDs with Jenelle Marie Pierce
What is an STD? What are STIs? What's the difference? Probably one of the first questions Jenelle is asked anytime she speaks about STDs. It's a great question and probably a question your teenager has probably asked you before.  What do you think of when you think of your child having an STD? Fear? Shame? Distress? What might your reaction to your child be if they were diagnosed with an STD? These questions, along with many others, are addressed in this episode of Birds and Bees Podcast with Jenelle Marie Pierce. Today she is speaking with Braxton about what teens don't usually know about STD/STIs. She covers what misconceptions are commonly taught, what they need to know and what you need to know as a parent. "I don't need to have this talk with my child because we teach to wait for sex until marriage." I love that you're having these conversations with your child. However, even if we are teaching abstinence until marriage there are other ways to contract STIs. With how much of a world wide issue this is, it is important that our teens understand STDs.  Braxton and Jenelle explore how to address STD conversations with your children, continuing curiosity with your teen after a diagnosis of STI, and    Resources spoken about in the show.        Listen on , , , , and      Leave Birds and Bees an iTunes review Leave a Stitcher Review Birds and Bees Facebook Page Listen from our webpage

Exploring Queer Spirituality with Jerry Buie, LCSW
When someone "comes out" in their sexual/gender orientation one of the first questions is "what does that mean for their relationship with God?" This question is based on the social assumptions of them leaving a religious belief and needing to "gain" a spirituality somewhere else. What if an individual who identifies as "queer" has all the spirituality in themselves? What if this is the case for all of us? Braxton speaks with Jerry Buie, LCSW about queer spirituality. Jerry gives a history of how queer individuals have been revered in different cultures and indigenous peoples. He explores the way we look and experience "spirituality" in our interactions with others especially if you are, or know someone who identifies as queer.  In a world where all of us live in a society that has a dominant religious belief, there is room for exploring what spirituality means, how to explore your own spirituality and how to be supportive and connected to your yourself, your child or your grandchild who identifies as queer.    Listen on , , , , and      Leave Birds and Bees an iTunes review Leave a Stitcher Review Birds and Bees Facebook Page Listen from our webpage

Masturbation, Values, and Kids with Natasha Heifer-Parker, MFT, CST
Masturbation, There are a lot of euphemisms for the word that makes many people uncomfortable to talk about. Let's face it, many parents are worried about what it means if their child masturbates.    If you are a parent who wants to be able to support your child in building values around masturbation while also avoiding shaming them then this episode is for you. Braxton and Natasha Heifer-Parker, MFT, CST are here to help dispel myths, talk about values, talk about masturbation, and to support parents in creating a value-centric view on masturbation. This is especially supportive for those who live in religious communities and practice themselves.    Many of us have grown up in a religious setting that explicitly or overtly teaches values about masturbation. It is difficult to be able to follow these values while also addressing the reality that the majority of children are participating in self-soothing/masturbation practices.    In this Episode we explore:    The question "when does masturbation usually start?"   Speaking to values when addressing masturbation    Different approaches to conversations about masturbation with your child.    Avoiding shame when having these (multiple) conversations.    Creating "I Do's" in what you value, VS following a "to Do" list.   Historical views of Masturbation and how they affect us now.    Identifying what we want for our children as a sexual being later in life.    Offering a value-centric view on Masturbation in religious communities while addressing the ways we can best support our children.    Natasha Helfer-Parker, MFT, CST speaks with Braxton about being able to explore these topics, address uncomfortable situations, and improve your understanding about "The M word."    Listen on , , , , and      Leave Birds and Bees an iTunes review Leave a Stitcher Review Birds and Bees Facebook Page Listen from our webpage

#37 Using Manipulation Techniques for Good with Peter Monson
We often see Manipulation in only a negative light. However, in this episode we identify ways you can use manipulation to benefit your relationship, improve your win/win situations with your children, and get what you want without causing damage. It takes a lot of self-awareness and empathy to be responsible with your words while realizing what they could do in your relationship down the road. Braxton and Peter talk about manipulation parents use on each other, teens, and children as well as what manipulation children use on parents. We also cover how to address them so real communication can occur.   See below for main topics we discuss and where they can be found in the show (maybe add 5 minutes to each because the introduction is taken out\. 036 Signs Your Partner is Manipulating you with Peter Monson
How would you like to know when you're being manipulated? Have you ever felt like you were manipulated in a relationship? Chances are you, and everyone else you know has felt manipulated at one time or another. What if I were to tell you that you're being manipulated right now? Yes, the people you interact with on a daily basis are manipulating you! But wait, there's more. YOU manipulate too! That's right. Humans manipulate each other each and every day whether we realize it or not. In this episode, we talk about forms of manipulation and how to recognize them. Now we often talk about manipulation as a bad/negative thing that only mean people do. While manipulation can be used as a tool for control it can also be a tool used for good in a relationship. Peter Monson was trained as a US army interrogator and works in politics and communications. He has a simple and effective way of identifying how manipulation takes on different forms using Marvel Characters, specifically Spiderman, The Hulk, and Thor. We talk on the show today about what manipulation is damaging in a relationship, and what manipulation techniques can take you from a win/lose situation to a win/win situation which can positively affect your relationship for years to come. Manipulation can be very harmful and damaging (like the Hulk getting the bad guy) and we are not trying to downplay the harm someone can do with manipulation. We are advocating for collaborative manipulation and using methods to improve your relationship with your children, your partner, your wife, your husband, and anyone else you interact with on a daily basis. Do you agree with the signs we point out? Do you think manipulation can ever be a positive thing? Let us know by calling 385-449-1818 or texting us at that number.
