Big Boss Babble Episode 7
This week’s host was Terry, who was joined by Jorge, Dann and Toby to discuss a bevy of topics. You can find each of the discussed topics below. This week's bonus discussion takes place at the end of the podcast, with Jorge discussing the recent Nintendo Direct, the games it brought forth, and the fact that Mario is almost definitely a human now. 00:00:00 – Jorge – Tooth and Tail - An RTS where you, the leader of a faction of animals during an Industrial Era inspired worker's revolt, play as the cursor. The team discuss their thoughts on the game's controls and setting.00:11:40 – Terry – Digital Rights and Fair Use - It's the age old story, Boy meets Girl, they fall in love, then Boy says something disrespectful and racist and so Girl DMCAs the video that Boy made of their game. The team discuss how Youtube is still very much in a Wild West state, with both advertisers and creators having little control over what goes where — most importantly though they discuss who truly owns the videos created, the makers of the game, or the personality in the video.00:25:05 – Toby – Hunting Yankee - The team discuss Hunting Yankee, a North Korean made game about shooting American soldiers.00:37:05 – Jorge – Spellbound - Stardew Valley publisher Chucklefish have been teasing their next title for some time, but it now seems to be on the threshold of a formal announcement. The team weigh in on their opinions on a game where you play a student at a magic school.00:43:10 – Toby – Heat Signature - Suspicious Developments' open-galaxy mercenary title is imminent, the team discuss their hopes for the game.00:48:00 – Dann – Cook Serve Delicious 2 - Dann waxes enthusiastic about CSD2 explaining the concept of the series, and the changes to the sequel to the team. Each of these topics will be released as individual Mini Boss Babbles throughout the week, however those versions will lack the closing discussion included in this podcast. Mini Boss Babble 6.6
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the final part of our sixth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss —as Jorge puts it— Steam's 'Sexy' problem, specifically their failure to address taboo and questionable games on their storefront. The conversation starts as a result of a recently released title, Strangers in a Strange Land, which followed in the footsteps of many before by successfully launching on the platform before outrage and complaints led to Valve eventually having the game removed until censored. Can the champion of the digital market afford to not be proactive going forward? Jorge, who knows exactly who he is and where he is, leads the topic, while Toby, Dann, and the Spirit of Terry are pretty sure they know who they are, but are most definitely in a Strange Land. Mini Boss Babble 6.5
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fifth part of our sixth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss FIGHT OF THE GODS, a recently launched game which instantly became notorious because its roster included Jesus and Buddha. This roster lead the game to being banned in Malaysia, however as the country had no control over digital versions of the game being sold they also decided that, for extra measure, they'd also ban the Steam store. Blimey. Toby, who has not even once tried to fight a deity, leads the topic, while Dann, Jorge, and the Spirit of Terry remained silent on their religious conflicts, but happily chimed in on the discussion. Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fourth part of our sixth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss L.A. Noire following it being announced that the game would be both launching on modern platforms and receiving new content in some instances. The topic rapidly shifts to the team's opinion on the game, where it succeeded and where it fell down. Please Note: We state that 'Doubt' was originally meant to be 'Accuse', in fact it was originally 'Force', you can read more about that here, ( https://web.archive.org/web/20111112094843/http://www.next-gen.biz/news/la-noires-doubt-was-originally-called-force ) [Archive of Edge]Detective Jorge, who should have quit this damn desk a long time back, leads the discussion, while loose cannon cops Toby & Dann join in with cracking the case.If you’re interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Can’t find us on your ideal podcast feed? Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the third part of our sixth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss XCOM 2: War of the Chosen, the most recent content pack for the 2016 strategy title. Well, we say 'we', it's largely Dann discussing how he feels that the expansion pack could have easily launched as a separate game, not least because of the extra content but because of the way the new content changes the pace of the game to feel a lot more rewarding. Dann, who just got melee'd by a faceless, leads the topic while Jorge & Toby remain in concealment. If you’re interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Mini Boss Babble 6.2
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the second part of our sixth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss Warner Brothers Interactive's recent hiccup regarding a DLC for Shadow of War. The DLC was originally intended as a tribute to a developer who sadly died, however issues surrounding where international revenue for the DLC —which was meant to go to the family of the developer— will go has cast suspicion on the long-running developer. Jorge, who knows both of the Warner brothers, and their Warner sister Dot, leads the topic, while Toby and Dann frown a lot and wag their fingers. In this, the first part of our sixth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, specifically the fact that it has now exceeded over one million simultaneous players. The topic also turns to the longevity of the game, our theories on its successes, and howe we feel it should approach future maps. Toby, who has eaten many a hot, chicken-based meal, leads the topic, while Dann, Jorge, and the Spirit of Terry didn't even make groundfall. Big Boss Babble Episode 6
This week’s host was Toby, and he was joined by speakers Jorge, Dann and the Spirit of Terry, to discuss a bevy of topics. You can find each of the discussed topics below. This week's bonus discussion takes place at the end of the podcast, with Toby bringing forth discussion on the (frankly despicable) inclusion of dabbing in Nintendo's Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle — although to be fair the topic is just Dann whinging about being old. 00:00:00 – Toby – PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds - A million consecutive players have now been spotted playing the battle royale game that just won't stop breaking records.00:18:07 – Jorge – Warner Bros' Charitable Act - Discussing the upcoming Shadow of War DLC which was originally intended as a tribute to a member of the team who had passed away. Due to recent changes the DLC now costs money, and there's a big grey area surrounding where the money (intended to be a donation originally) will go when it is sold outside of the North American region.00:29:17 – Dann – XCOM 2: War of the Chosen - Dann prattles on mindlessly about XCOM 2's recent expansion, how it could have been a standalone game, and how it completely changes the pace and linearity of the game for the better.00:29:17 – Jorge – L.A. Noire - Rockstar and Team Bondi's 2011 detective title is said to be making a return. The team discuss the game at large, where it went wrong and where it succeeded. Please Note: We state that 'Doubt' was originally meant to be 'Accuse', in fact it was originally 'Force', you can read more about that here, ( https://web.archive.org/web/20111112094843/http://www.next-gen.biz/news/la-noires-doubt-was-originally-called-force )[Archive of Edge]00:42:56 – Toby – Fight of Gods - Yeah — so, somebody made a game where Buddha and Jesus can fight, and that's not cool, and so the Steam Store got blocked in Malaysia, and the team discuss how Valve need to be more proactive.00:53:29 – Jorge – Steam's 'Sexy' Problem - Carrying on perfectly from the previous conversation, Jorge mentions Steam's reaction time and technique when scandals kick off based around games on the platform. The most recent game to have this happen is Strangers in a Strange Land, which we touch on briefly. Each of these will be released as individual Mini Boss Babbles throughout the week, however those versions will lack the opening discussion included in this podcast. Big Boss Babble 5.6
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the final part of our fifth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss Nintendo's latest batch of 'Nindies' as well as the true meaning behind 'Nindies'. It's a somewhat heated discussion, with the team divided on exactly how much pride Nintendo should take regarding 'securing'' games for their platform, however the team do all agree that more games in general is a good thing, regardless of which platform holder it is for. There's also a discussion based around the accomplishments of the console versus Nintendo's previous consoles, and whether —for comparing such— the Switch should be considered an advanced Mobile platform, or handheld, rather than a conventional home console. Jorge, who has collected six of the seven secret acorns, leads the topic, while Terry, Dan & Dann have no idea why we are using collectathon analogies for a subject based around independent games on a Nintendo platform. Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fifth part of our fifth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss flashcards, a storage medium used to emulate the controls and feel of older platforms by actually requiring a version of the console to function. What starts off as a simple discussion on the principle becomes a discussion on some of the older generation's technology, as well as some discussion on the technology itself. Flashmaster Trence takes the topic, while Dan, Dann, and Jorge mutter about the good old days. If you’re interested in hearing the full podcast then you can check it out here. Big Boss Babble 5.4
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fourth part of our fifth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the sudden return of Star Wars: Empire at War's multiplayer servers, as well as what that could mean for older games which had previously been sent to the farm. RTS games, as much as MMORPGs, revolved around online communities to keep the games alive; with the ease of which severs were shuttered over the last decade there are a lot of games which have simply been erased from history. Could a simple act of audience-tribute from Disney be enough to kick start a revolution in maintaining and reinstating fallen servers? Dann is still searching for lobby, while Terry, Jorge, and Dan all input their own opinions into a message buffer while they wait for him to join. Big Boss Babble 5.3
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the third part of our fifth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss Infinite Minigolf, specifically because it was removed from the Switch store after it was discovered that the game contained illicit content. As we discuss, developers and animators have been hiding messages and images in games for years. Why, however, we simply don't know. Boredom probably, *Please note: we erroneously state the reported issues, in fact the game was pulled due to a naked woman around the genital area of a hulking alien on a poster.* Terry led the discussion of this topic, while Dann, Dan & Jorge all chimed in. Big Boss Babble 5.2
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the second part of our fifth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss Bethesda's recently relaunched Creation Club, a second attempt at one of the companies initiatives from the past. Is charging for mods wrong? Well, that's a big grey area. Is changing continuously for mods well after they've been approved to work on the games fair? Well, that's certainly a lot less of a grey area. The modding community is a strange thing, regularly simply creating things they wanted to experience in the game — how does an act of passion combine with an act of, what can be seen as, gatekeeping? Topic lead Jorge is entirely free to experience, but it'll cost you $6.99 to experience Terry, Dan & Dann's inputs in the conversation — or will it? Mini Boss Babble 5.1
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the first part of our fifth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss Fallout: New California, a total conversation mode for Fallout: New Vegas which has been arduously developed over the last four years by a dedicated team of modders. Natch the conversation shifts onto Bethesda's efforts with the series, leading to two specific discussions: 1) on the potential of a Fallout: Enhanced Edition (in the styling of Baldur's Gate), and 2) on Fallout 4's poorly executed structure. Haggard vault dweller Dann led the discussion while Terry, Jorge & Dan fretted over attempting to find a replacement water chip in time. Big Boss Babble 5
This week’s host was Terry, and he was joined by speakers Jorge, Dann and Dan to discuss a bevy of topics. You can find each of the discussed topics below. This week's open was a discussion surrounding games which inspired us to look into things we'd not have done so with otherwise — specifically, in our case, mythology and music. 00:08:17 – Dann – Fallout New California - A total conversion mod for Fallout: New Vegas. The subject shifts onto Bethesda possibly allowing for a Fallout: Enhanced Edition. And a little bit of whinging about Fallout 4's structure.00:20:09 – Jorge – Bethesda's Creator's Club - Discussing the value to the creators, and the industry on the whole, of Bethesda's return to the idea of charging for authorised mods.00:37:15 –Terry – Infinite Minigolf - The golfing game was recently pulled from the Switch marketplace due to illicit content. EXPLICIT WARNING. Please note: we erroneously state the reported issues, in fact the game was pulled due to a naked woman around the genital area of a hulking alien on a poster.00:42:49 – Dann – Star Wars: Empire at War - The 2006 RTS has recently gained official multiplayer servers through the kindness of Disney. This leads to a lengthy discussion about online servers being restored.00:53:16 –Terry– Flashcarts - Are they ethical, or viable, to retro fans?00:59:53 – Jorge – Nindies - Nintendo have finally embraced the indie side of the industry, however is it too little too late, and are they wrong to be branding them as their own initiative? Each of these will be released as individual Mini Boss Babbles throughout the week, however those versions will lack the opening discussion included in this podcast. Big Boss Babble 4.6
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the final part of our fourth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss Powerstone 2, easily one of the most underappreciated fighting games, and one which could be relevant in this day of eSports and MLG. Powerstone 2's charm is strong, and Capcom already have a route into the competitive gaming scene with Street Fighter, argues Dann. However the subject soon shifts onto the (actually quite high) plausibility of the game making it to modern platforms via Sega's recent efforts. With that comes an answer to a question which wasn't asked. What happens when a person born after the game launched (2000) plays the game for the first time and discovers a new type, and set, of games which no longer exist? Recently illuminated Dreamcast fanatic Dann led the discussion while Terry, Jorge & Toby attempted to collect all of the Power Stones so they could defeat him in their enhanced forms. Big Boss Babble 4.5
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fifth part of our fourth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the news that Acid Wizard Studio have released their title Darkwood for free on PirateBay with a simple message: Buy it if you like it, but not from a key reseller. This, as subject lead Terry explains, is a fantastic way of getting your game out there to people, however it also underlines something that's been absent from the industry for a decent amount of time: the demo. There's then quite a storied discussion regarding Valve's returns policy, Shareware-Freeware games, and episodic games with free episodes to warm people to the game. Sea Captain Terry led the discussion while Dann, Jorge & Toby discussed waxed nostalgic on the various ways we used to, or could still, get to grips with a game without paying the entry fee. Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the fourth part of our fourth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the recently announced Biomutant, an unexpected announcement from THQ Nordic which was made just as Gamescom opened up. It's an interesting looking ARPG which looks ready to challenge a lot of the genre tropes which saw the 90s staple rapidly dry up. And, while there's not much currently known to talk about, we give it a ruddy good go. Jorge led the discussion while Dann, Terry & Toby discussed the merits of killing lots of things to get a bigger sword as to kill bigger things. Big Boss Babble 4.3
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the third part of our fourth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the spooky, scary 'games crash' which we've been being warned about for years — although we're really, actually, discussing the oversaturation of the marketplaces due to the increase in games becoming available for sale each day. In an age when hundreds of games, if not thousands, are being published to platforms which used to be nearly exclusive, marketing and PR has become a lot more than recommended, it's mandatory. The real dangers of these shifts? A dissolving of the middle tier of the current development scene; where budgets and shifting distribution shuttered mid-tier publishers and developers over the last decade, this new shift will simply rend their replacements unprofitable if they cannot find a way to secure enough attention on launch. At least, that's the danger. Doomsayer Dann led the discussion while Terry, Jorge & Toby continually told him to put down the bell and sandwich board and instead concentrate on nicer things. Big Boss Babble 4.2
Mini Boss Babble are smaller, one topic cuts from our otherwise extensive weekly podcast. In this, the second part of our fourth Big Boss Babble podcast, we discuss the recently news that Gearbox Publishing will be handling a physical release for We Happy Few, with the full AAA treatment promised for the title. We Happy Few is an interesting title to go through the transition from indie to AAA (on marketing) if not least due to the amazing reception to the game's E3 trailer rapidly thawing as people were presented with a (in my opinion, solid) survival title rather than the Bioshock-meets-the-seventies style game many were expecting. Resident 'Special-Edition Cynic' Terry led the discussion while Dann, Jorge & Toby discussed the merits of buying sixteen different versions so that you can get every set of dachshund armour on day one.
