Biblical Manliness 080: “Image Bearers”
Episode #080 For November 11, 2014 “Image Bearers” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: Chris takes a look at the concept that we are the “image bearers” of God. God created us in His image (Gen 1:26-27). He intends for us to reflect His nature, His character, and His attributes to the rest of Creation. In order for us to bear the image of God we must be conformed (Rom 8:29) to the One Who bore God’s image perfectly—Jesus Christ (Heb 1:3). Biblical Manliness 079: “Realizing Responsibility”
Episode #079 For Tuesday, November 4, 2014 HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: If you had to summarize manliness in one word, what word would you choose? In this episode of Biblical Manliness, Chris makes a case for "responsibility" as the keyword of Biblical masculinity. From the beginning of Creation God intended for man to be a creature familiar with responsibilities. If we are going to be real men we must realize the responsibilities that God has given us and assume the roles that He has intended for us to assume. Biblical Manliness 078: “Sticks And Stones”
Episode #078 For Wednesday, October 22, 2014 “Sticks And Stones” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: Our speech influences and impacts those around us. We can either heal or hurt with our words. It’s even possible to abuse someone without lifting a finger if we bomb them with the artillery of our words. Verbal abuse can cause great damage to our wives, our children, and our friends. Simply put, abusive speech should have no place in the life of a Christian gentleman. "Verbal abuse includes withholding, bullying, defaming, defining, trivializing, harassing, diverting, interrogating, accusing, blaming, blocking, countering, lying, berating, taunting, put downs, abuse disguised as a joke, discounting, threatening, name-calling, yelling and raging.” (http://www.verbalabuse.com/) We will be held accountable for our words (Matt 12:36-37). God expects us to build others up with our speech (Eph 4:29) and not to destroy them (Pro 15:4). A Biblical man doesn't verbally abuse his spouse; he nourishes and cherishes her (Eph 5:28-30). Biblical Manliness 077: The Gift Of Fear
Episode #077 For October 7, 2014 “The Gift of Fear” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a month set aside to raise social cognizance of domestic violence. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. 85% of domestic violence victims are women. Biblical men aren’t domestic abusers. They don’t harm the wives or their children physically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually. However, many men—even Christian men—are guilty of spousal abuse. Text: 1 Peter 3:7 Pre-indcient Indicators Associated with Spousal Violence and Murder (Taken from The Gift of Fear, pg. 210-212) The woman has intuitive feelings that she is at risk. At the inception of the relationship, the man accelerated the pace. He resolves conflict with intimidation, bullying, and violence. He is verbally abusive. He uses threats and intimidation as instruments of control or abuse. He breaks or strikes things in anger. He has battered in prior relationships. He uses alcohol or drugs with adverse affects. He cites alcohol or drugs as an excuse or explanation for hostile or violent conduct. His history includes police encounters for behavioral offenses. There has been more than one incident of violent behavior. He uses money to control the activities, purchases, and behavior of his wife/partner. He becomes jealous of anyone or anything that takes her time away from the relationship. He refuses to accept rejection. He expects the relationship to go on forever. He projects extreme emotions onto others even when there is no evidence that would lead a reasonable person to perceive them. He minimizes incidents of abuse. He spends a disproportionate amount of time talking about his wife/partner and derives much of his identity from being her husband, lover, etc. He tries to enlist his wife’s friends or relatives in a campaign to keep or recover the relationship. He has inappropriately surveilled or followed his wife/partner. He believes others are out to get him. He resists change and is described as inflexible, unwilling to compromise. He identifies with or compares himself to violent people in films, news stories, fiction, or history. He suffers mood swings or is sullen, angry, or depressed. He con

Biblical Manliness 076: “True Grit: Grit For The Grind”
Episode #076 For September 23, 2014 “True Grit: Grit For The Grind” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: There’s no doubt about it—Nehemiah had grit. The interesting thing about Nehemiah’s determination is that God used his normal, every-day job to build consistent character within His chosen vessel. Nehemiah learned courageous character not when serving in Jerusalem but while working for the king in the palace. God has the ability to use the mundane and menial tasks of common employment to create a rock-hard Christian character. Text: Nehemiah 1-2 Tip: Take God to work with you (Neh 2:4). Biblical Manliness 075: “True Grit: Worries From Within”
Episode #075 For September 16, 2014 “True Grit: Worries From Within” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: Biblical men need grit, courageous character (cf. Luke 9:62; Phi 4:13; Col 3:23; Ecc 9:10). Nehemiah (Not John Wayne’s Rooster Cogburn), the Old Testament builder of the walls of Jerusalem, had more a healthy dose of grit. One of the greatest hurdles to Nehemiah’s work proved to be those of his own group. Fortunately for those in Jerusalem, God had chosen a man who had the grit to stick out all the challenges of the Jews who were less than supportive. Text: Nehemiah 2:17-18 Tip: The man with grit uses a hoe, not a flamethrower, among God’s people.     Episode #074 For September 9, 2014 “True Grit: Woes From Without” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: Biblical men need grit, courageous character (cf. Luke 9:62; Phi 4:13; Col 3:23; Ecc 9:10). Nehemiah (Not John Wayne’s Rooster Cogburn), the Old Testament builder of the walls of Jerusalem, had more a healthy dose of grit. The Samaritans, Ammonites, and Arabians tried to stop Nehemiah’s work. Fortunately for those in Jerusalem, God had chosen a man who had the grit to stick out all the challenges of Sanballat and his cohorts. Text: Nehemiah 2:19-20 Tip: Grit, like calluses, comes with work, friction, time, and effort. Biblical Manliness 072: “Obeying God When It’s Tough”
Episode #072 For August 26, 2014 “Obeying God When It's Tough” HOST: Chris Clevenger         Show Notes: This week’s Biblical Manliness is recorded live at Polishing the Pulpit in Sevierville, Tennessee. Repentance and obedience to the Gospel as well as faithfulness to God throughout life can be difficult at times. Joseph, the adopted father of our Lord, shows that Biblical men obey God even when it is tough. He wed Mary and raised Jesus though the Lord was not his biological son. He faced shame and rejection from his family and community. He had to overcome various trials in raising the Son of God; nevertheless, Joseph gave a reliable example when he was called to obey God in difficult circumstances. Text: Matt 1:24-25 Tip: Tough men obey God even when it is tough to do so. Biblical Manliness 071: “Kent Brantly and Risky Faith”
Episode #071 For August 19, 2014 “Kent Brantly and Risky Faith” HOST: Chris Clevenger       Show Notes: The past several weeks have been filled with news about Kent Brantly, a family physician and brother in Christ. Dr. Brantly was working with Samaritan’s Purse in the country of Liberia when he contracted the very disease he was fighting against. After receiving initial medical treatment overseas, Dr. Brantly was flown to Atlanta and has been receiving the best medical care that the United States has to offer. At the time of this recording, Dr. Brantly is to be discharged from the hospital in the near future, free from Ebola. Though he has received criticism for placing himself in harm’s way to minister to those in need, Dr. Brantly has expressed his reasons for laboring in Liberia in the most Christ-like manner. Throughout the entire process, I’ve reflected upon the fact that we, as Biblical men, are called to live lives of faith in service unto Christ—no matter the consequences or circumstances. Text: Acts 20:24 Tip: Risking life and limb for one’s faith isn’t foolhardy, egotistical, or ignorant; it’s real Christianity (cf. Lk. 5:13).
