Taking Up Your Cross
Jesus issues the call for true discipleship in startling terms! Taking up the cross is a call to utter loyalty to him even to the point of death.  Only the grace and strength the Spirit supplies in the time of need can give us confident hope in being such a disciple. Deny yourself is not about being less selfish or looking out for others or making time for God and Jesus. It has nothing to do with t-shirts or slogans. It is the call to come and die. As his own people those who belong to him by faith we must have total loyalty to his person. Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. Who Does Jesus Think He Is?
There have always been various opinions about Jesus of Nazareth. This was true in his own time and it is true today. On one occasion he asked his disciple Who do people say I am. The general opinion then was you are a prophet in not more. But Jesus directly asked them- Who do you say I, the Son of Man am? Then Peter makes the great confession that Jesus told was revealed to him by the Father. Peter replied in answer to the question- You are the Christ the Son of the living God! Here is the question I want us to explore- Who did Jesus think he was? What was Jesus’ self-identity? The correct answer to this question is essential. Belief in Christ
There are at least two occasions when Jesus elicited a confession of who he was from his Twelve disciples. All thee of the synoptic gospel record the conversion at Caesarea Philippi. After their report of the popular opinion of him Jesus asked them, "Who do you say I am?" Their reply voiced by Peter was, "You are the Christ (Messiah)." What exactly are his disciples confessing?  Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. Jesus' Three Baptisms
Did you know that Jesus the Messiah, Jesus Christ received three baptisms during his life and ministry? He began his ministry as the Promised One who would redeem his people and bring in the Kingdom of by being dipped in the Jordan River by John his forerunner. John cam preaching a baptism of repentance. Jesus asked John to baptize him. John did not think he should because he knew Jesus was sinless. Jesus said we do it to fulfill all righteousness. Immediately coming up from the water Jesus is immersed (baptized) with the fullness of the Holy Spirit. He is filled with the Spirit to do his ministry as Messiah and fulfill the three offices that received an anointing by oil under the Old Covenant- as Prophet like Moses, as High Priest like Aaron and as King like David.Later in last half of his ministry he spoke of his baptism of suffering he would undergo to redeem his people. Jesus' 8th Day- The Naming
on the 8th day after his birth Jesus under went two highly significant events, his receiving the covenant sign of circumcision and the bestowal of his personal name.Names in the Hebrew and other Semitic cultural are not mere labels but often carry profound meanings.  The name Jesus was given to him from heaven by the angel Gabriel to his chosen mother Mary before she became pregnant and repeated to Joseph in a dream. The name tells of the child's origin and his mission that would be completed when he became an adult. Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. Jesus 8th Day- the Cutting
Jesus eighth day after his birth by Mary was highly significant. Two great events transpired as recorded by Luke 2:21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb. More precisely Eight days after his birth, the child was circumcised and named Yeshua. This was the name the angel had given him before his mother became pregnant. [Name of God Translation]By his circumcision Yeshua is marked as a child of the Abraham Covenant and under the later added covenant with Israel through Moses. On the eighth day, the flesh of the boy’s foreskin shall be circumcised, Leviticus 12:3  Generation after generation, every male must be circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased from a foreigner--even those who are not your offspring. Genesis 17:12   Paul relates in Galatians,  But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law. Galatians 4:4 4 But when the right time came, God sent his Son into the world. A woman gave birth to him, and he came under the control of the laws given to Moses. (NOG)Here is the question. What does Jesus' circumcision have to do with the cross and what bearing does it have on the life believers, the Christian? Lessons from Jesus Family Tree
It is important who your mother is. Matthew does something unusual in his genealogy of Jesus. He mentions women- 4 before Mary the mother of Jesus. This message looks at Ruth and the wife of Uriah. There are a number of lessons that can be drawn from the stories of these women ancestors of Jesus and the sons born of them.Consider the 4 women: Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and the wife of Uriah. What do they have in common and what can we learn from their placement in Jesus' family line? Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. Women in the Tree
Have you ever traced your family ancestry? In many societies of the world and especially in the Bible times among the Hebrews (Jews) it made a big difference who your father was. As we open the New Testament and the gospel narrative of Matthew we are presented with Jesus ancestry through the legal line of Joseph. Matthew's  genealogy is very unique and constructed to highlight that Jesus is a descendant of Abraham and of David. The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.... 2 Abraham was the father of Isaac, and Isaac the father of Jacob, and Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, 3 and Judah the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, and Perez the father of Hezron, and Hezron the father of Ram, 4 and Ram the father of Amminadab, and Amminadab the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon the father of Salmon, 5 and Salmon the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed the father of Jesse, 6 and Jesse the father of David the king. And David was the father of Solomon by the wife of Uriah, 7 and Solomon the father of Rehoboam, ... 16 and Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ.Luke 3 :23 Jesus himself, when he began to teach, was about thirty years old, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli...A very unique feature of this family is the inclusion of 5 women especially 4 that are the first section. They are Tamar, Rahab, Ruth and the wife of Uriah. Why are they listed? There is even shameful evil behavior associated with 3 of them. Faith in the Christian Life
The Bible helps us understand the nature of faith in the lives of God's people by giving us the examples of faith in Hebrews 11. This chapter is often called the Roll Call of Faith. Here are listed some of God's examples of people who had faith in him. Hebrews 11:1 is not a definition of faith but a description of how faith operates. The author then demonstrates by various examples. We are familiar with most of them and we call things that happened in their lives as people of faith. However we often do not see or comment on the author's main point in the chapter. Let's consider what he wrote.  Hebrews 11:13-16  These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth.  For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland.  If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return.  But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city....39-40 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,  since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect. Are You an Advent Christian?
When your hear the word advent what comes to mind. Probably you think of the birth of Jesus, Christmas as we call the holiday. This however is not what came to mind in the early churches. Advent came with the promise of Jesus to return to the earth after his ascension to the Father. The New Testament writings refer to Christ return, his advent or second coming hundreds of times! The word advent refers to the arrival of a notable person or event often with eager expectation. This is mindset of the early Christians. Christ came the first time in fulfillment of prophetic promises but his Messiah work embraces both a first and second coming. He is coming again to resurrect the dead and establish the new earth where he will live with his people.  Are you looking for his return with eager expectation? Are you an advent Christian? Can the Law Save?
Paul writes a deep insight in Romans 8:2-4.  For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.  3 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, 4 in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. To understand what the law could not do we must understand its purpose. We ask the question what can or does the Law do . When we grasp this then we can understand what it could not do but what God must do in Jesus Christ for our salvation. The Holy Spirit and Jesus' Presence
On the day of his resurrection from the dead Jesus twice revealed himself to his disciples at a meal. He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread. (Luke 24:31f and Luke 24:43). Perhaps this is the reason the Lord's Supper or Communion is referred to in Acts as "the breaking of the bread" (Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7).Jesus connected his spiritual presence to the partaking of bread in his teaching on himself as the bread of God come down from heaven in John 6.A question: How do we know Jesus today? I have never seen Jesus in the flesh, or heard his voice, yet I can say that I know him. I am not just speaking about him in the New Testament narratives but really knowing him personally and having fellowship with him. True, God's Word is necessary, but the Holy Spirit is the One who makes Jesus known. Jesus spoke of him as another Paraclete, or Helper - the Counselor who would come in his name and make Jesus known to us. Jesus spoke of what we now call the Lord's Supper as a meal in which we take and eat bread and share a poured cup of the fruit of the vine . He used these words of instruction and interpretation, "Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to the disciples, and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. (Matthew 26:26-29)Paul brings all of this together in 1 Corinthians 10:16 where he writes, "The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ?" The required answer from the context is "Yes." "Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread." He contrasts this with pagan worshippers partaking communion with demons in their feasts.  He is speaking of the real spiritual presence of either demons, on the one hand, or the Lord Jesus himself, on the other hand. Paul writes, "I imply that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons. You cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons." The Holy Spirit is the One who makes Christ Jesus' presence real to us. Through the Holy Spirit we have communion, fellowship, participation with the living Ascended Jesus Christ who is in his body with the Father, yet spiritually present with us by the Holy Spirit.  Some words in the communion service express this truth, "Take and eat, and feed upon Christ in your hearts by faith with thanksgiving." Faith on Trial
Psalm 73 is a testimony of a true believer whose faith is put on trial. He believes that God is good to Israel but when he sees the prosperity and arrogance of the wicked  he gives way to envy. His thoughts become a vexation of spirit. "Surely I keep myself pure for nothing." He is tempted to share his doubts with others but God held him back. In retrospect he said, "If I had spoken like this I would have betrayed your children." When he went into the presence God in his sanctuary he was granted an understanding of the divine perspective. When he compared the fate of the wicked with his own assurance of God's blessings he confessed his sin and is restored to the joy of those know the God of Israel. The Gospel Context of John 3:16
If you were ask for a verse in the Bible that expresses the gospel many would quote John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son that whosoever believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. Now this is a glorious and wonderful statement of truth but it does not contain the whole of the gospel. The sentence requires context which Jesus supplies by referring to the bronze snake on the pole in the wilderness (Numbers 21:5-9) Jesus explains more in John 12 when he speaks of the Son of Man being lifted up. The Righteous Live by Faith- Habakkuk
Paul in his great letter to the Romans expounds the righteousness of God in saving his people. Paul quotes this prophet in his statement of the theme of his letter to the Romans.  For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.  For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”  Romans 1:16-17 quoting Habakkuk 2:4. in Romans 3:21 he explains that  "the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.Habakkuk, a prophet bears witness to God's righteousness and then furnishes an example of loving by faith in the true God. His prophecy is easily divided into 3 sections.Chapter 1 The prophets complaint that wickedness and violence fills the land and God needs to do something. Why aren't you putting a stop to this evil of your people the Hebrews blatantly breaking the Mosaic covenant.God answers- I am doing something. Something you would never imagine I am sending the Babylonians to judge my people and rid the land of their wickedness.Habakkuk What! How could you? These people are the worst of the worst. How can the holy God use the greater evil to judge your people. I will go on the rooftop and wait for God to answer me. God answered and his answer fill the prophet with dread yet he had confidence in God . His responsive prayers demonstrates living by faith in the holy righteous God who is the God of our salvation.  Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. How You Can Be Righteous before God
Jesus tells a story that illustrates how a person can be declared justified, in right standing before God. It is found in Like 18:9-14. Two very different people with very different prayers- one an outstanding person zealous for God who does all the right things and avoids the obvious bad. He prays basically to himself about himself with a thank you to God for his help. He regards the other man with contempt. The other man knows he is unworthy and has nothing to commend himself but with deep awareness of his sin, his person as a sinner, he calls upon God for mercy based on the atoning sacrifice.  A literal translation "And the tax-gatherer, having stood afar off, would not even the eyes lift up to the heaven, but was smiting on his breast, saying, God be propitious to me -- the sinner!" In essence he prays, God be my mercy seat! What is the outcome? Jesus said only the repentant tax collector who call on God to show him undeserved mercy based on the atoning sacrifice. This is a picture of the great truth of  salvation by grace alone in Jesus Christ alone received by faith only.It puts flesh on the declaration of Romans 3:22-26 Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. How Can a Holy God Accept as Righteous Guilty People? Romans 3v20ff
Sin creates a problem for people because by it we are condemned before God and damned. The Law reveals this but it can not rescue us. Why? Because we are lawbreakers and continue to transgress. Our sin also creates a problem for God who desires to receive us into his fellowship and has chosen us in Christ. How can he righteously forgive us and then treat us as sinless and righteous before him? He cannot maintain his holiness and righteousness unless the sin and the guilty sinners are punished and pay for their sin. God is able to justify, treat as holy and righteous sinners who believe in Jesus.  How does God do this? He accomplishes it through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. He, the Righteous One, took our sin, our guilt, upon himself and paid the debt, endured the curse, and exhausted God'd wrath against us. 2 Corinthians 5:21 states, "For our sake God made Jesus to be sin, the sinless One who knew no sin to be the sinner so that in him we might become the righteousness of God!" God in Christ's atoning death expiates, that is, removes our sin, and in Christ's resurrection life clothes us with his righteousness. It is external to us, a righteousness that belongs to him and his holy righteous life but credited to us! This is the glorious gospel of our Lord!   Bible Insights with Wayne ConradContact: 8441 Hunnicut Rd Dallas, Texas 75228email: Att. Psalm 8 and the Man Christ Jesus
Psalm 8 looks back to the original creation of humanity in Adam. It relates the language of God's command to Adam found in Genesis 1 and 2. Man was a glorious creature made in the image of the Creator God. He was a marvel in a perfect world that God had made for his habitation. But something happened, and Adam and Eve disobeyed God.  In the Fall man was cursed and cast out of the garden. Even the created order was affected by man's fall into sin. Although humans remain in the image of God that image is marred, distorted with a dead spiritual nature and a mortal body destined to perish. Psalm 8 can provoke questions since man does not currently have undisputed or full dominion over the earth. Even the flood with its judgment that cleansed the earth and in a way had a second beginning in Noah, humanity remains in a fallen state of sin and the curse of death. But there was hope given to mankind in the curse God put upon the Serpent that the Seed of the woman would one day destroy the Enemy and restore mankind to the full image of the Creator.  When we look in the New Testament we see that Psalm 8 is treated as a Messianic psalm. It looked forward to the coming of the Man Christ Jesus, the Second Adam who represents those whom the Father has given him. Thus Psalm 8 is treated by the author of Hebrews as speaking of the incarnate Son of God, the Son of Man. Although we do not currently see all of mankind enjoying the rulership of the original order we do see Jesus! See Hebrews 2:5-9. We see Jesus in his incarnation who suffered our curse of death in all of its dimensions now risen and glorified. Jesus in his whole dual nature  is crowned with glory and honor. He bears the perfect image of God, and humanity is restored in him to an even more surpassing glory than the original state of man. Redeemed humans, those connected in faith to the Lord Jesus, will be resurrected in his image and will exercise their God-ordained role on the new earth in the eternal state.
