Meal One, by Ivor Cutler
One of my favourite stories as a child. Ivor Cutler is a master of the gleefully surreal. This story is a joy is a joy to read. Helen Oxenbury’s illustrations match Ivor’s tone beautifully. My favourite thing about this book is the mother of the story, who is a rambunctious defier of gender expectations and loves to playfight with her son.

The doubtful guest, by Edward Gorey
Episode 1 – the doubtful guest (see main post if you’re confused): This is such a lovely little book. When my children were small, I would find any excuse to read them this story. There’s something about the gentle oddness that makes me happy. Hopefully it will also make you smile.
