BT Episode 10 – Smart Guns
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Show notes: HOST (Merle) – Welcome To The PODCAST      Find us at www.mcprodnet.com/beavercreektacticalpodcast      Leave feedback on the website      Better yet, leave a voice mail by clicking on the “send voice mail” box on our web-page!   The first so-called “smart gun” has hit the shelves at U.S. retail outlets, including one of the biggest firearms stores in California, according to the Washington Post The Smart System iP1, a .22-caliber pistol made by the German gun-maker Armatix GmbH, can only function with an accompanying wristwatch, which is sold separately.   When the RFID-equipped watch is activated by a PIN number and placed near the gun — like when a shooter grips the handle — it sends a signal to unlock the gun and a light on the back of the weapon turns green, according to the report. Otherwise, the firearm stays locked and the light on the back remains red, it stated.   The pistol sells for $1,399 and the watch retails for another $399 — more than double the cost of .40-caliber Glock handgun, according to the article. The company is betting that demand for the technology will increase as consumers seek guns modified for safety.   The intelligent iW1 wrist watch arms the weapon for firing and also has the following functions:   PIN code entry and PIN code management for weapon enablement   charge level indicator for watch and weapon   time-controlled weapon deactivation   extensive watch functions, waterproof   interchangeable straps, power supply for 5,000 rounds or a minimum of one year standby, depending on operation.   iP1 Pistol with innovative features:   .22 LR calibre, 10 round magazine   electronic magazine disconnect   different operating modes   an operating distance of up to 10 inches   integrated grip and drop safety   color-coded operating mode, patented mechatronic interface for additional applications (e.g. camera)   tested and approved by ATF   Problems I see with this….   Requires some sort of power source…. power sources fail!   Pairing issues?   Battlefield pick up   price – Out of range for most people

BT Episode 8 – Gun Safety
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Show notes:   Introduction: Gun Safety. Lets discuss several rules you need to follow when using or storing a gun.    Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction – A safe direction depends on your environment. Always keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Always keep the gun unloaded until ready to use – Ask yourself, are you ready to use this gun? Know your target and what is behind it – You need to be aware of your backstop and what is beyond it. You need to ensure your gun is safe to operate – Read the manual, make sure it works properly. Guns are mechanical and mechanical devices fail! Know how to use your gun – Be sure you know how to utilize the safety features of your gun. Know how to load and unload, know how the gun works. Utilize the proper ammunition for your gun – There are a plethora of different types of ammunition out there. Some look very similar. Wear the appropriate safety equipment – Always utilize eye and ear protection. NEVER use alcohol or drugs before or while you are operating a gun. Be aware that certain types of guns and certain types of shooting activities require additional safety precautions.     LINKS: NRA Safety Rules – https://training.nra.org/nra-gun-safety-rules.aspx Different type of ammunition – https://ammofever.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/1400px-Ammo.jpg

BT Episode 7 – Complacency
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Show notes:   Introduction: com·pla·cen·cy (k m-pl s n-s ). n. 1. A feeling of contentment or self-satisfaction, especially when coupled with an unawareness of danger, trouble, or controversy. As I was out walking my in-laws dog this morning I began to think, “I don’t have anything with me to protect myself”. I didn’t have my keys, I didn’t have my cell phone, I didn’t have a gun, and I didn’t even have my id. Talk about stupid! I began to realize that I appear to have become complacent in my surroundings. I live in what I believe is a nice neighborhood in a nice town but we are not void of crime. Needless to say, I couldn’t even defend myself from a wild dog much less a crazed mad man. That got me to thinking about complacency. We need to ensure we don’t become complacent in our everyday lives. I think that is harder to do than one might think. So I think it is important to recognize when we become complacent so we get an attitude adjustment. We need to remind ourselves about the need to maintain a warrior mindset and ensure we are “in” the appropriate Cooper color code. Another thing to think about is complacency while we clean our guns and while we train. We can’t get into a “place” where we become complacent and mishandle our gun and cause an accident. We need to constantly be mindful and try and not to let the tasks we perform become mundane. We need to keep our mind on the task at hand. Remember, be aware of your mindset. If you find yourself becoming complacent change it! Don’t let complacency get you in trouble. LINKS: YouTube video where the DEA agent accidently sets of a gun. BT Episode 6 – Having A Warrior Mindset
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Show notes:   Introduction: Lets go ahead and define what a warrior is. It is “someone who is skilled in combat or warfare.” A warrior trains for combat and they are well prepared for it. In order to be considered a warrior one must constantly be in training. Now, lets define mindset. A mindset is an attitude that predetermines your response to a given situation. Your mindset helps determine what you do and how well you do it. You can have a positive mindset or a negative mindset. Lets talk about a negative mindset. Say you have an 8 O’clock Monday morning meeting every week with your boss. You’re not a morning person and you haven’t even had your second cup of coffee by eight. You don’t look forward to this meeting at all. All you can think about is how early it is, it’s Monday, and I want my second cup of coffee! You would rather be at your desk drinking that 2nd cup of coffee catching up on the e-mail that has come in since you left Friday evening. You’ve already predetermined that the meeting is a waste of time before you’ve entered the room and you don’t even know what the meeting is about. The boss has already lost you before you even place your butt in the seat. Having a warrior mindset is about having a positive attitude the situation. You know what the goal is and you can demonstrate the appropriate behavior to back it up. You are well prepared for what ever comes your way (that’s where the constant training comes in). You’re confident because you are well trained; you’re prepared; and you know how to react to the situation because you have thought about it. You are going to win and survive whatever situation you are confronted with. That’s a positive mindset! You can’t go into a survival situation with a negative mindset. In order to win you must have a positive mindset. You need to say to yourself, I WILL win this, I WILL overcome this. I WILL…. You need to train and prepare you mind to think like this. Dr. Michael J. Asken wrote in one of his books, “…experience shows that up to 90% of successful performance is attributed to psychological skills. Rarely is that number reported to be less than 40%. This comes from talking to military personnel, police officers, including SWAT tactical team members, and other emergency responders who engage in life and death situations.” We must have our minds right. You must see yourself winning. Mental imagery, or visualization, can be one of the most powerful skill sets a person can have to enhance their mental toughness. If you don’t see yourself winning the fight, there is a good chance you’ve lost the fight before it started. If you don’t first see it how can you achieve it? Mind training goes a long way. Think about the action you want to perform. Focus on it and imagine yourself going through the motions while quietly sitting in a place with no distractions. Visually see yourself going through the motions. Just like training on the range to produce muscle memory, train your brain. See it and believe it! The folks that make it through difficult situations are the people with the best attitudes and strongest wills to survive. It’s not always the biggest and strongest who make it, but those with the most heart and the most passion; those who keep on going no matter what is thrown at them are usually the ones to succeed. There is a great book out by Dr. Michael J Asken and LTC Dave Grossman called Warrior Mindset. its a very in-depth look at the Warrior Mindset. Even though the focus is on Police Officers and Military members, its a book that will help you prepare yourself should you ever find yourself in a self-defensive situation. BT Episode 5 – Run, Hide, Fight (Avoid, Evade, Counter)
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Show notes:   Introduction: When we are faced with a serious self defense situation we basically have three different ways we can react to the situation. Run (Avoid): Completely remove yourself (and your loved ones if applicable) from the situation. YOUR BEST alternative IF you can do it safely. Hide (Evade): You may not be able to run, so you next best option is hiding. Remember to lock doors if present and if they have the ability to be locked. Close any blinds and turn out any lights. Mute your cell phone. But be prepared to fight if you have to. Make a plan, see your plan through, and implement that plan with a Warriors Mindset! Fight (Counter):If you have to fight, bring total shock and awe. Be committed! See your plan through! You want to live through the encounter and make it home to your loved ones. Always remember that there really is no order and you have to do what is in your best interest. Please leave us feedback.

BT Episode 4 – Situational Awareness

(b McLellan, Dennis (1 October 2006). “Jeff Cooper, 86; Firearms Expert Set Standard for Pistol Technique”. Los Angeles Times. BT Episode 3 – Castle Doctrine / Stand Your Ground
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Show notes:   Introduction: More than half of the states in the United States have adopted the Castle doctrine, stating that a person has no duty to retreat when their home is attacked. Some states go a step further, removing the duty of retreat from other locations. “Stand Your Ground“, “Line in the Sand” or “No Duty to Retreat” laws thus state that a person has no duty or other requirement to abandon a place in which he has a right to be, or to give up ground to an assailant. Under such laws, there is no duty to retreat from anywhere the defender may legally be.[1] Other restrictions may still exist; such as when in public, a person must be carrying firearms in a legal manner, whether concealed or openly. Beard v. U.S. (158 U.S. 550 (1895)) that a man who was “on his premises” when he came under attack and “…did not provoke the assault, and had at the time reasonable grounds to believe, and in good faith believed, that the deceased intended to take his life, or do him great bodily harm…was not obliged to retreat, nor to consider whether he could safely retreat, but was entitled to stand his ground.”[2][3] Information obtained from: Wikipedia Closing Question / Comments: What are your thoughts on the “Stand Your Ground” / “Castle Doctrine”?

BT Episode 2 – Do Celebrities Influence Opinion When They Comment On Cases Like the Martin / Zimmerman Case?
Hosted By and Produced By: Merle Cox   Former basketball player Sir Charles Barkley stated ““Well I agree with the verdict,” Barkley said. “I feel sorry that young kid got  killed, but they didn’t have enough evidence to charge him. Something clearly  went wrong that night — clearly something went wrong — and I feel bad for  anybody who loses a kid, but if you looked at the case and you don’t make it —  there was some racial profiling, no question about it — but something happened  that changed the dynamic of that night.” Read more:  https://www.foxnews.com/sports/2013/07/19/charles-barkley-said-agrees-with-george-zimmerman-verdict/#ixzz2ZVkP2QBu Do you think celebrities influence public opinion?
