Decoding sustainable growth
Barrick’s latest hackathon took place in Las Vegas from March 9-11. It’s been the largest event of its kind the Company has organized to date in terms of participation from outside people as well as from inside Barrick. This was the Company’s sixth hackathon. Our experience with these events so far has taught us many things. One of them being that hackathons are an avenue to not only generate innovative ideas to industry challenges, but also to support economic growth in our host communities. In this podcast, we take you on a trip from Nevada to Argentina to show how through hackathons we’ve woven together the threads of innovation and sustainability in mining.

These aren’t your childhood remote-control vehicles
We hear from some of our people involved in developing and testing underground semi-autonomous and autonomous equipment at our Cortez mine in Nevada. But that’s not all. We also hear from project leaders and operators at our Hemlo mine in northern Ontario. They’ve had a similar system in place since 2007, and they’re looking to upgrade. They tell us what it was like to adjust to the new technology, and how they’re faring with it now.

Twenty-first-century skills for a twenty-first-century world
Barrick’s Tim Buchanan talks about how Barrick, Cisco, and Great Basin College are partnering to offer digital skills training free of charge in Nevada. This interview with Las Vegas radio host Chuck Baker aired on 97.1 The Point. As part of Barrick’s ongoing evolution to generate wealth for our owners, our people, and the countries and communities with which we partner, the Company is digitally transforming its operations, integrating technology into everything we do. This initiative not only encompasses our mines, it extends to our host community partners, underscoring our commitment to generate sustainable benefits and mutual prosperity everywhere we operate. In Nevada, where our digital transformation is being rolled out initially, we have partnered with Cisco and Great Basin College to bring digital and information technology skills development courses, free of charge, to the local community. In the following interview with Las Vegas radio host Chuck Baker, Barrick’s Tim Buchanan talks at length about the partnership. Buchanan, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility at Barrick, also talks about Barrick’s operations in Nevada, the Company’s work with the local community, and why mining is an attractive field for a twenty-first century world.

Changing the emphasis on sustainability
Barrick’s new sustainability vision sets the Company’s gold standard for partnering with host communities. In this podcast, Peter Sinclair, Barrick’s Chief Sustainability Officer, talks about the Company’s new sustainability vision, and how it was developed. The vision, Sinclair explains, places a renewed emphasis on the true owners of ore bodies: our host countries and communities. He also discusses the role this vision plays in the Company’s goal of advancing together with all our stakeholders. The vision, which aims to change paradigms about sustainability in mining, will be front and center at the Company’s first-ever Sustainability Briefing for Investors. Changing mindsets about mining at Barrick’s first-ever hackathon
In early March, Barrick hosted its first ever hackathon. More than 100 people spent 54 hours developing digital solutions to two Barrick business challenges. Most were new to mining and possessed the kind of skills the industry needs. There were software developers and data scientists, user experience designers, electromechanical engineers, mathematicians, and an astrophysicist. Many of these individuals came with, well, let’s just call them interesting views about the industry. “Take no offense to this,” said one participant, “but I thought the mining industry were dinosaurs.” This and other perceptions evolved over the course of the weekend and participants developed some remarkable prototypes to address two Barrick business challenges. The hackathon underscores the Company’s efforts to drive innovation by looking outward and attracting new talent to Barrick’s already outstanding workforce.

Mining data to mine better: All about Barrick’s digital reinvention
In this podcast about Barrick’s digital reinvention, we explore big picture questions. What is digitization, and what are the benefits? What kinds of skills will the workforce need to develop? What does the evolution of mining look like? Along the way, we meet a few of the people behind some early examples of digital transformation at the Cortez gold mine in Nevada. This podcast takes us 1,200 feet beneath the Earth’s surface, where beaming Wi-Fi signals is challenging (but not impossible). We peer over the edge of one of the mine’s open pits and learn about some of the real-time data that mining equipment will produce to make better and faster decisions. We also explore the process mill, where advanced computers are helping our people optimize the way gold is processed. All of this and more in this Beyond Borders podcast on Barrick’s digital reinvention. You’ll hear from these people in the podcast: Michelle Ash - Barrick’s Senior Vice President of Business Transformation and Innovation Alex Smith - Account Manager at Cisco Ethan Hull - Manager of Information Technology for Barrick North America Rob Kufeld - Underground Instrumentation and Communication Supervisor at Cortez Theo Kandawasvika - Technical Services Superintendent at Cortez Katie Marten - Open Pit Technical Services Superintendent at Cortez Pam Moyo - Senior Metallurgist at Cortez Matt Majors - Process Maintenance Superintendent at Cortez David Yazzie - General Supervisor of the Overland Conveyor at Cortez Gordon Chiu - Vice President of Information Management Technology for Barrick
