How to Be a Better Ally for Social Justice featuring Dr. Joy Cox
I have been looking forward to speaking with Dr. Joy Arlene Renee Cox for months now. She is such a beautiful soul and I'm so grateful to her for all the work she's doing in the world. In today's conversation we talk about trusting our intuition, the lived experience of individuals with larger bodies, being brave in the healthcare industry, cultural biases, and discrimination against people with different bodies. In light of the current season of anti-racism, she also answers the question of "How can we use our intuition to be better allies and advocates?" Political action as a tool for liberation, especially for people with multiple identities is having an exciting moment in our history. Dr. Joy Cox sees a lot of that happening in the communities. She said in this episode "Liberation is built on the structure of bravery. If we look back generations, we'll see that our parents and our parents' parents' parents' had something to fight for... When you look at activists now, the shoulders they stand on belong to people who were conditioned in bravery, so to speak, they were able to stand up to the things that were impeding against them and say 'we're gonna do this.'" This conversation with Dr. Joy Cox challenged me and inspired me in such good ways and I hope it will do the same for you too! Especially as we dive into a new season of personal and societal bravery for the rest of this year, we need as much of this kind of bravery as we can get! Her book "Fat Girls in Black Bodies: Creating Communities of Our Own" releases September 29th of this year and The School of Bravery cannot wait! More About Dr. Joy Cox Joy Arlene Renee Cox is an ordinary person who has been given an ordinary opportunity to share stories about people much more fabulous than herself. She is a Philadelphia native, born on the blessed thirty-first day of December. Joy is a claircognizant Capricorn that thrives through connection and love, rooting for the underdogs in life to take their rightful place as overcomers. She is also a doctor, receiving her PhD from Rutgers University–New Brunswick in 2018. Her field of work is centered on fatness, identity, and social change. Reflective of the name she bears, Joy has the cheeks to out smile her detractors. Reflective of her work in print, she has the research to back up her claims. While the spotlight has never been a position she’d prefer to stand in, Joy does believe in speaking up and advocating for what’s right. She is the author of Fat Girls in Black Bodies: Creating Communities of Our Own, published through North Atlantic Books, and the host of the pro-fat, pro-Black podcast Fresh Out the Cocoon. Joy has been featured in articles by the Huffington Post and SELF magazine. Joy has also been on several podcasts, such as Positive Nutrition with Paige Smathers and Food Psych with Christy Harrison. Dr. Cox is simply a conduit through which love, wisdom, and justice flow. Her pride is in her people and her values. Her strength is in her disposition and her intuition. Good Girls Talk About Sex & Context with Leah Carey & Emily Ann Peterson
Today we get to discuss something we haven't really talked much about on this show! It's kind of shocking really when you think about it. But Leah Carey is the perfect guest to pop this bravery cherry of ours because she is a Sexual Communication Coach! In this episode, you'll hear Leah Carey and our founder, Emily Ann Peterson, discuss the importance of context to your sexual life, how Leah's context defined her brave sexual journey and blossoming, and other lovely tidbits that you will really appreciate. We have a feeling you'll be hearing more from Leah in the future! There's so much to learn from the bravery of intimacy! About Leah Carey Leah Carey is a Sex Educator and Sexual Communication Coach who helps people learn to communicate about sex so they can get what they really want in the bedroom - rather than just tolerating what they’re getting. She is the host of the podcast “Good Girls Talk About Sex.” Sexual freedom is a subject that is deeply personal to Leah because she spent most of her life being a VERY good girl. Most of the sex she had was either boring or painful, but she endured it because she didn’t know she was allowed to ask for anything different. Having taken her own journey to sexual freedom, she is now passionate about breaking the silence, fear, and shame around women’s sexuality and pleasure, and redefining what it means to be a “good girl.” www.leahcarey.com www.instagram.com/goodgirlstalk www.facebook.com/goodgirlstalk About The School of Bravery The School of Bravery is a learning lab for life, career, and creativity. Undefended Living, Racism, ADHD, and Inherent Worth with Ellis Delaney
I first heard about Ellis, because one of her patrons suggested that I would REALLY love her songwriting. I immediately became a patron myself. Then later met Ellis Delaney in person at the Rocky Mountain Song School & Folk Festival. She taught a really excellent workshop on planning, project management, and undefended living as an artist. In that workshop, she briefly mentioned her ADHD and I just *knew* she would be a perfect guest expert for The School of Bravery. This month in the School of Bravery, we're focusing on the bravery ingredient of "Constraints." As an artist with ADHD, I knew she'd be a perfect guest expert to speak on this ingredient because she has so masterfully adapted to her constraint without letting go of the standards and expectations she has for her career. In this episode, we talk about racism, pain, struggle, community, creativity, and a LOT more, specifically the topic of "Inherent Worth." This is definitely a conversation you'll want to continue with your friends and family, both online or in person. As a guest expert in the School of Bravery, Ellis Delaney shared a mini-training on her 6 Crucial Tools to Creating with ADHD! So if you get easily overwhelmed by your dreams and goals, then you'll love what she has to share in that. You can enroll as a student for as little as $25/month and access her training along with all the other guest expert trainings in your student portal at http://schoolofbravery.com I know you'll love Ellis and her work as much as I do because she is so thoughtful, intentional, and compassionate. 085: How to Use the Context of Vulnerability with SARA AVANT STOVER
Sara Avant Stover is with us today! This month in the School of Bravery and on the podcast we're focusing on the bravery ingredient of Context, specifically as it pertains to being vulnerable. When I gave Sara a couple topics to choose from, she actually picked this topic, so get ready for some powerful and introspective looks at how context plays a role in our bravery and ability to be honest and vulnerable with others and within ourselves. Sara Avant Stover is a teacher of feminine spirituality and empowerment, bestselling author, and founder of The Way of the Happy Woman. She mentions this a briefly in our conversation today, but after a cancer scare in her early twenties, Sara moved to Thailand, embarked on a decade-long healing and spiritual odyssey throughout Asia. She has gone on to uplift tens of thousands of women worldwide. Sara has also been featured in Yoga Journal, the Huffington Post, Newsweek, Natural Health, and on ABC, NBC, and CBS. I'm really excited to have her here with us today. I know you'll appreciate her calm and grounded presence throughout the whole conversation, which is completely appropriate (context, yes?) because what we later land on is the importance of silence and listening in the midst of Seasons of Bravery. I'm so pleased to present Sara Avant Stover... Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to take an extra moment before responding to the next thing (email, phone call, text, etc.) Breathe deeply and ask yourself how context will play a role in your reaction to that next thing. Did you notice that mindfulness change anything for you? If so, we want to hear about it in the Bare Naked Bravery Community Facebook Group! As always, we'd love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Sara Stover and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. 083: How to Kill Your Darlings with Radical Essentialism with MARTIN STELLAR
Today we have Martin Stellar with us! Martin is a former monk who is currently using those skills and experiences to assist ambitious creative entrepreneurs to really make a difference. He himself is a brave creative all around: Writer. Illustrator. Marketing Educator. Teacher of sales magic. Singer. and Psychology fanatic. I was particularly excited to discuss this month's School of Bravery theme of the Timing with him and how that element improves your improvisational skills and practice of building bravery. We discuss meditation. We talk about the struggle between process vs. progress and then take a deep dive into the subject of unattachment, judgment, and how to "Kill Your Darlings." Martin also mentions a really practical suggestion for knowing when to act on a new idea: put it "on the shelf" at least three times or until you find a "Hell Yes!" Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to try out Martin's suggestion of putting a new idea "on the shelf" this week. 082: How to Find Your Purpose in the Midst of Transition with JONATHAN DEWAAL
I'm so honored to introduce you today's guest! Jonathan DeWaal is with us today to discuss the timing of improvisation, especially as it pertains to seasons of bravery and transition! Jon is the executive director of Liminal Space, a nonprofit organization based out of Seattle, WA which is dedicated to helping others find the courage and means to navigate major life transition. One nugget of a quote he laid down in today's conversation is this: "The gold we're often looking for is found in the place where you find the most discomfort." So true. We're not just talking about the discomfort of transition, but also two really powerful questions to ask when we find ourselves smack in the center of a liminal space or transition: - How did I get here? - Who do I want to become now? He also gave us a wealth of resources towards the end of our conversation, which I'll be sure to pop the links to all of it in the show notes for this episode. Thank you so much Jon for stepping into today's conversation with your whole presence. All of us going through transitions thank you immensely. Before we pop into the conversation, let me just say this. You probably know of someone going through a season of bravery and transition. If you do, share this episode with them. Another resource I'll just put out here because it's thematically resonant: The Seasons of Bravery Ritual Workshop is waiting for you on emilyannpeterson.com/workshops - it's a series of videos, guidebook, and 6 steps to help you make some plans and attain some goals. So if you find yourself in a season where you might need to take a step back and acknowledge the sacredness of discomfort and growth, go for it! Additional options for taking next steps are to go listen to Jon's new podcast called, "Life Through Transitions." (https://inaliminalspace.org) He and I took a deeper dive into my own stories of transition to unpack that liminal space for his audience. We got to talk about elements of my story that I don't often discuss, so if you're curious, that link is also in the show notes. With allll that, I am delighted to introduce Jon DeWaal... Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to ask those two questions to a friend going through transition. Bonus points go to those who actually sit down and listen to your friends answers. Having a witness for your own transitions is immensely healing and helpful, but being a witness to someone else's metamorphosis is equally so. We'd love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery. You can find Jonathan DeWaal and myself on facebook, twitter, instagram, and more. Go ahead and tag us so we can cheer you on and see what you're up to. More Resources Book: "Transitions" by William Bridges Book: "Crossing the Unknown Sea" by David Whyte Book: "To Be Told" by Dan Allender More About Jon DeWaal Jon came to Seattle in 2003 from Grand Rapids, MI, to attend The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology receiving his Masters of Divinity in 2007.  Since then, he taught at The Seattle School as an adjunct professor on calling and career. Jon served for two years as a fellow and teacher at The Allender Center for Trauma & Abuse.  Through his education, mentoring and the struggles and discoveries of his transitions, Jon found a more natural fit for his career – creating Liminal Space, an organization that combines the often segregated disciplines of counseling, life coaching, career counseling and spiritual direction.  Over the last 10 years his work and research has shown that major transitions are places where people can find their desired path and become stronger, or where they can get stuck – sometimes for years. Having a plan, helpful guidance, and a clear focus can make all the difference in the world. 081: How to Manage Stress & Expectations as an Entrepreneur with BENJAMIN DELL
Anybody who has ever done something new for the first time will tell you it's a bit stressful. Ask any entrepreneur how their stress-life is and they'll most likely tell you they're hanging by a thread or really overwhelmed orin some cases they'll look like the stress gives them a high that only illegal substances could explain. ha! I say that from experience, because I've been all versions of stress management as an entrepreneur. I've poorly handled my stress and especially after the diagnosis of my hand tremor, I've learned how crucial it is to manage this stress wisely. But where does this stress come from? Well, Benjamin Dell, founder and CEO at Missinglettr.com (a social marketing automation company that automatically creates 12 months worth of social content for each blog post you publish) is here with us today to chat briefly about just that. Part of that stress comes from sustaining high levels of defiant expectation for seemingly impossible things. Since this month's theme in The School of Bravery and on our podcast Defiant Expectation, I'm so pumped to discuss this subject with someone who so blatantly possesses it. Ben previously owned a web agency in the UK for over 10 years. During this time he also launched a number of SaaS tech startups (two of which were acquired). It's clear to me, especially from our conversation with him today, that Benjamin is passionate about empowering businesses and brands with tools that help them succeed. Defiant expectation is one of those tools, so without further ado, I give you Benjamin Dell! Brave Takeaway Beyond your free Bravery Bundle (which is always available at barenakedbravery.com) your Brave Take-Away from today's show is to pop into the Bare Naked Bravery facebook community to share the latest time you executed your defiant expectation skills. How have you managed your stress? How are your coping with the sustainability of living as a creative misfit? We'd love to hear all about your favorite parts of today's Bare Naked Bravery.
