Ethics in Employment: Why Can’t We Just Get Along? (The Power of Ethics)
Ethics in Employment: Why Cant We Just Get Along? (The Power of Ethics) is a book written by Pete Geissler and Bill ORourke. The book is narrated by Troy McElfresh. Ethics--described briefly as the norms by which acceptable and unacceptable behaviors are measured--has been the concern, and perhaps the great dilemma, of sentient humans since Socrates subjected it to philosophical inquiry almost 2500 years ago. Socrates believed, without universal acceptance, that the most pertinent issues people must deal with are related to how we live our lives, what actions are and are not righteous, and how people should live together peacefully and harmoniously. A vast parade of philosophers, religious leaders, politicians, professors, and self-help gurus have followed Socrates lead through the ensuing centuries; its a popular and enduring subject, perhaps because it is so complex, intriguing, and pervasive in every facet of our lives. Today, in 2015, ethics dominates our news in the form of anti-ethics. The headlines in newspapers and the lead stories on TV, radio, and Internet news are typically about such abhorrent behavior as lying, stealing, revenge, convictions for corruption, gratuitous murder, and misuse of public or other peoples funds for personal gain. Readers, viewers, and listeners can hardly be faulted for thinking that we live in a corrupt society, exactly what Socrates and others did not want or envision. Perhaps the anti-ethical stance of the media is the most anti-ethical part of our society. Nevertheless, the battle for a more ethical society rages unchecked and unabated; one needs only to examine the dozens of books with ethics in their titles on sale at Amazon or Barnes andamp; Noble, including this one and those that are listed in APPENDIX G. I daresay that the authors, including the two who created this book, hope that their words and thoughts will help move us toward a more civil society. The authors are both optimistic and pessimistic: optimistic in that they see considerable interest and renewed vigor in teaching ethical behavior in our business and professional colleges; pessimistic in that they do not see our popular media either willing or able to change from reporting unethical to reporting ethical behaviors, from reporting tears and fears to reporting smiles and hopes. Readers of this book can help. As pointed out in the prologue, all of us can be ethical ambassadors, all of us can be ethical role models: perhaps doing so is our mo

7 Causes of Caregiver Guilt
Hello and welcome to aworldofmouth.com – Recently, my wife (Angi) underwent brain surgery. It was roughly 5 years before we obtained a diagnosis, which was unbelievable to me that a person could suffer that long. It was determined that her veins were not working on one side of her brain to help drain the fluid that protects the brain. This caused what most would call water on the brain (Brain Swelling). This mainly occurs in traumatic injuries like motor vehicle accidents. She had not had a crash. So, what caused it? We were unable to determine the cause, but are guessing that it was from child abuse at an early age that caused it to quit working years later. We both went through many emotions including guilt. Which is why I chose to audition (as an audio book narrator) for The 7 Causes of caregiver guilt. I was glad that I was selected as the narrator. The book has 8 strategies that give caregivers emotional freedom. of guilt that occurred or is occurring for caregivers. The Real Story Behind “Tiger Woman” with Author John W. Huffman
Experience the terror of Vietnam in a graphically written fictional / non-fictional book centered around a female soldier who supported the communist cause so efficiently. Tiger Woman written by John W. Huffman. [ca_audio url_mp3=http://traffic.libsyn.com/aworldofmouth/2015-4_Tiger_Woman.mp3 url_ogg= skin=small align=center] I had a great time narrating Tiger Woman by John W. Huffman. It was even more enjoyable to interview him about his story. I highly recommend you read or listen to Tiger Woman. Tiger Woman depicts a brief period of unconventional warfare that tests the boundaries of humanity in a haunting tale of unremitting evil no ordinary soldier ever trains to face. Captain Christen, a dedicated intelligence officer with the 25th Infantry Division, directs an all-out hunt for a roguish female who leads a small guerrilla force with chilling efficiency as she employs depraved acts of psychological warfare to instill terror in those she opposes. This historical fiction provides graphic detail of the bitter struggle between the hunter by day who becomes the hunted by night as the pendulum of power swings to and fro with the rising and setting sun. Tiger Woman infuses great passion into a previously undisclosed segment of the Vietnam conflict in a manner never before portrayed by bringing into sharp focus the female soldiers who supported the communist cause so efficiently. John W. Huffman was born 29 November, in Hemphill, Texas, attended elementary school in Pineland, Texas, junior high and high school in Jasper, Texas, and graduated summa cum laude from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He enlisted in the Army Airborne in 1966 and served two tours of combat in Vietnam, the first as a private, and subsequently a sergeant, with A/1/27th Infantry, 25th Infantry Division, in 1966-67, and the second as an officer/aviator with the 120th Aviation Company in 1972-73. He retired as a major in 1986 with three Purple Hearts, three Bronze Stars, sixteen Air Medals, one Army Commendation Medal, two Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry Medals, and various other service and campaign ribbons. Upon leaving the Army, John launched a real estate sales and management company, owned and operated seven speedways in five states, created an automobile racing and sanctioning body, and developed three touring series. John has honorable mentions for two short stories, along with his six other novels: A Wayward Wind, a Regional Finalists in the General Fiction category of

2015-1 When You Doubt Your Ability As a Business Owner
[caption id=attachment_1802 align=alignright width=115] Advertisement[/caption] When business mistakes begin piling up, self-doubt is sure to follow. Should you change your approach? I’m going to offer advice for getting the most out of a difficult business season or year. Nobody likes to make mistakes in business. I don’t like to make business mistakes. I don’t even like to write about business mistakes. But we’ve all been through it—making business mistakes that don’t seem to turn around no matter what you do. In today’s world, you can’t just grit your teeth through business mistakes. In fact, a sub-par year of business needs to be handled with as much care—if not more—than a year in which everything seems to go right. Business mistakes usually lead to questions and doubts: Should I alter my approach? Set new guidelines? Change my expectations? How do I keep employees or those with whom I do business with from getting frustrated? How do I keep them from losing confidence in me? Should I start hiring younger people and look ahead to next year? How do I respond to the complaints of customers? And how do I make sure I don’t lose the business? Your answers and actions will make a huge difference in how things turn out. [caption id= align=alignright width=166] Affiliate Ad[/caption] andnbsp; Check In With Yourself It is important to realize that making mistakes in business is not an indication of your business management ability. However, the way you respond to those mistakes can be. When mistakes pile up, your values and leadership will be exposed in a new way. How you respond to adversity will show those around you what you’re really about. That’s why the first step to take when you are having an off week or month or even year is to review your management philosophy. If you have a written plan of action, re-read it. It will help remind you why you started your business to begin with, and for most of us, it’s not only about money. Staying true to your business philosophy is paramount to keeping the situation positive. Here are three critical areas that will define who you are during a the bad times: Consistent Expectations: During a business downturn, it can be tempting to lower your standards for work and work ethic. However, your employees and customers stand to gain nothing from you lowering your expectations. If you expect your employees to get to practice submit ideas for improving every day when business is good, th

DS104 – 5 Ways to Get A Leg-up on 2015
2015 is right around the corner. Its time to get a leg up! Which also means to have an advantage over someone else. How are we able to get a leg up? If youre like me and you dont have a crystal ball to help you see into the future, you must determine on your own what is the best way to help you generate sales. 1. Recognize that its not going to happen on its own. People are not going to start knocking on your door to get your products unless they have a desire or a need. Sometimes you need to be the one to create the desire or the need. I think sometimes that you have to be the one to generate the idea and present it to the world to see if its wanted. For instance if you are a sign maker - You shouldnt just say We make signs and then expect for everyone to say oh yah - I need a sign to tell everyone the party is here. Instead make a sign that reads The party is here with an arrow then advertise that sign during the most likely time for parties. Be sure to utilize key words best suited for the party sign. The point is that you generally have to paint the picture for people. For instance - The aworldofmouth.com podcast show. Our tagline Small business series poodcast lets everyone know exactly who the intended audience is for. 2. Create a professional, clean and friendly environment for people when they visit your store. Even online stores should create a professional, clean and friendly environment. Think about the last place that you visited that created a positive experience for you. One of those for me was the restaurant Amazing Joes in Muncie Indiana. Its owned by a friend of mine Mike Robinson who says that their motto is The answer is Yes. 3. Tell everyone what you do and who you are.. for instance be a guest on a podcast show - you can request to be a guest on aworldofmouth.com by simply visiting the website and clicking on the Contact Us link. 4. Be innovative. If you havent noticed Frozen is the biggest thing since the automobile. Just ask my grand-daughter and shell belt out a few notes. If you watch that movie, Im sure that you will see that everything is glitter and glamour. Now look at the newest wedding trends - glitter and glamour is the way to go. 5. Set Goals - You should set both long term and short term goals for 2015. When you look at where you are today, how did you get there. By luck? Even if some of it was by luck, you set a goal. I wanted to be a Police Officer at a very young age. I

DS103 – The Shortest Day of The Year
Today (December 21) is the shortest day of the year. The winter solstice has arrived, which means that starting tomorrow, those brief moments of sunshine will last slightly than they did today. Today the daylight will only last nine hours, 15 minutes and 13 seconds. Sunrise is at 7:17 a.m., with sunset at a whopping 4:32 p.m. If you get depressed at the lack of sunlight, you should cheer up, because tomorrow will last a little bit longer. That dose of vitamin “D” that you need is right around the corner. Occasionally, we all have a dark day – days when everything seems to go wrong and we are hoping for a brighter day. We could also look at all “dark days” as being like the winter solstice. Tomorrow there will be more sunlight, tomorrow will be brighter. Even on this darkest day, their area things in it that make it brighter – great family, great friends, pets that are always glad to see you know matter if the day is long or short. If you are one of those people that can shake off the dark day better than most, you could always brighten the day for someone else, with a kind word, a smile, a little larger tip at the restaurant or for the person that cuts your hair. Pick up the phone and call someone to let them know you care. Tomorrow is a brighter day – even if it’s dark

E23 Fine Furniture Industry – MacKenzie-Dow Fine Furniture
In the summer of 2001, their family was approached with an idea – to make solid cherry case goods in the United States. Although this may seem like an elementary concept on the face of it, at the time, within the furniture industry, this was not the direction in which things were trending. It wasnt only about producing a domestic furniture product though. No, with the idea that was presented to them - the functionality, and more importantly the feel, of the furniture was just as important as producing a visually appealing product. The idea, if you really want to call it that, was to return to the roots of cabinetry and furniture making. [ca_audio url_mp3=http://traffic.libsyn.com/aworldofmouth/E23_Fine_Furniture_Industry_-_MacKenzie-Dow.mp3 url_ogg= skin=small align=center] October 2001 was a somber, difficult, and uncertain time in our nation’s history. They had just arrived at the Fall High Point Furniture Market to introduce the very first pieces of furniture we had ever produced, those that would eventually lead to the origination of MacKenzie-Dow. It was their good fortune that they knew some people within the furniture industry, most of them well established, who had agreed to take a look at what they had produced. Maybe it was the mood of the country at the time or the direction in which things were moving within the industry itself - they can’t really say for sure. Whatever it was, everybody that stopped by their booth was complimentary of what they had done and encouraged them to continue down this path – and so they have. Theyve grown tremendously since that time and are grateful for the opportunity to continue doing what they love, producing solid, American-made products behind which theyre proud to stand. They were a small, close-knit wood shop when they took that leap of faith back in the summer of 2001, and that family atmosphere remains today. They enjoy what they do – from the creative aspect of their custom program to incorporating new ideas into new products, each day is a new adventure. They look forward to what the future brings, meeting new people and experiencing new places along the way that play an integral role in shaping and bettering MacKenzie-Dow. We hope you enjoy this interview with Bonner Adams of MacKenzie-Dow. http://www.mackenziedow.com/ PICTURED BELOW: Gary Adams (left) and Bonner Adams (right).

DS99 Go Viral with Unexpected Customer Service
Small business owners spend dollar after dollar trying to obtain the new customer. What about providing unexpected customer service? Now there is an idea! It will cost you very little to provide unexpected customer service. This will get you all the customers that you need! Let me explain. If you provide the ultimate customer service, your customers will do all of the work in helping you gain new business on their own. It will not cost you any more than the time to train your employees. [ca_audio url_mp3=http://traffic.libsyn.com/aworldofmouth/DS99_Go_Viral_with_Unexpected_Customer_Service.mp3 url_ogg= skin=small align=center] Train and trust your employees and managers to make decisions. I’m sure that you’ve asked a question at a place of business only to hear them say, let me ask my manager. Provide some parameters and leave it up to them to ensure the customer is happy. Not only will this help you with customer satisfaction, it will show your employees that you trust them to exercise their decision making power. If the customer still isn’t happy or they ask to speak with a manger, ensure that your employees understand they will be making the customer happy by letting them speak with the manger. Remember the ultimate goal is to make the customer feel happy and important. After all, everyone likes to be liked and everyone likes to be right. Great all guest with a happy greeting (with meaning) and help them feel a warm welcome. I’ve often revisited a place of business not because they’re the cheapest, but because of the friendly interaction with me. I met one business person that would try everything in the world to let you know if they hadn’t seen you in a while. He just wanted to ensure that you were okay. Sounds more like a friend to me than a business owner. You could always ask them to connect with you on Facebook or linkedin with a sign on your counter. It might seem too weird if you just popped that question upon your first meeting. So, let the sign do that one, unless you know them pretty well. Transparency is a must for trust. Nobody likes doing business with a business that they feel isn’t trustworthy. Be upfront and honest about everything and you will gain a customer and a friend. Being transparent also means that if you make a mistake, be honest and let the customer know. Tell them how you are going to make things right and apologize. Do a double take. Have employees check each ot

DS98 How Important is Customer Service
Great customer service is what causes a happy repeat customer. A happy repeat customer will tell all of their family and friends about you and your business. Then when their family and friends visit your business they will in turn tell all of their family and friends about your service. If your services are good and you have a good product at a marketable price, then you are looking at growth potential. [ca_audio url_mp3=http://traffic.libsyn.com/aworldofmouth/DS98_How_Important_is_Customer_Service.mp3 url_ogg= skin=small align=center] You can’t have a business if you have no customers? So, you must have great customer service. The repeat customer that you are working for is extremely important and valuable. Take yourself for example. Where do you repeat shop? I stop nearly every morning before work and buy that addicting fountain drink for .99 cents. According to Restaurants.com, beverages in general are often the most profitable items a restaurant sells. Drinks sell for roughly 20 times what a restaurant or store pays. Most of that profit is realized because the drinks are mostly tap water. Let’s say that the store realized a per drink profit of 90 cents. If I visit the store 20 days a month then the store will earn $18.00 per month from my drink addiction alone. Occasionally, I do buy other products while I’m there, which creates extra earnings. Ok, let’s go back to just to topic of drinks. If I multiply $18.00 per day per person for a drink and if 200 people per day buy a drink, then you earn $3,600.00 for drinks in one month. That my friend is the real reason that you should treat the 90 cent customer the same as you would the one person that will spend $3,600.00 in one stop. So, now ask yourself how important customer service to you and do you have the things in place to ensure your employees create customer satisfaction even if you are not there. If you do, great! If not, you need standard procedures, like the ones from bizmanualz.com. I hope that listening to todays show sparked a thought to help you with your business.
