Welcome back to SynthStories... it's been 2 years since the last episode was broadcast and I'm so happy to return! We're back with a bang featuring a synth anthem from Belgian band GOOSE! Dave Martijn from Goose reveals the makings of the crazily addictive hook from Synrise, recreates it from scratch and explains how the anthem came into being using the iconic ARP Odyssey and their love of synthesisers in general.

In this episode of SynthStories Jade Rose from the US, recreates parts of her beautiful track, Amethyst, that can be found on her new album Moonstone. Jade has an interesting array of synths, modular synths, guitars and other gizmos - some that she’s built herself. Among the synths explored in this episode are the Arturia MicroBrute, Ambika and the Freestate FX modular in the Lawrence public library in Kansas, USA. In this episode of SynthStories one of Brazil’s best-loved music exports, Wehbba, reveals his synth workflows on the headliner from his recent EP, Eclipse. Although originally written using an Arturia synth plugin, Webhha re-made the main hook after he met the Roland & Studio electronics SE-02 analog synthesizer.

Multi-award winning Budapest-based electronic musician, media and film score producer, Dani Karanyi, takes us deeper into the synth score of his latest album, Stardive. This album explores the interaction between AI and a Biologist in a post-apocalyptic world. Using the versatile and unique Dave Smith Instruments OB6 synthesizer, Dani recreates sections from the track Welcome Home Zeta from Stardive. The accompanying novel for Stardive is being released shortly as an ebook.

In this episode of SynthStories New York native and Berlin-based electronic producer, Eric Maltz, takes us into the addictive and bruising machine techno that is the title track of his recent EP, Pathway. The Pathway EP features 3 tracks that Eric feels explore the doubts and fears one faces and has to overcome when setting out on a new path. Using his trusted Moog Sub 37 duophonic analog synthesizer, Eric recreates the synth line featured in Pathway.

In this episode Todd Barton takes us on a musical and literary journey back to 1985 when he worked with Ursula K. Le Guin, famous for the EarthSea novels. Todd Barton created the musical score for Ursula’s fascinating novel, Always Coming Home, which focuses on a people that might have lived a long time ago in Northern California, and the book came with a cassette tape of music, songs and poems for The Kesh co-created by Ursula and Todd. The music for Always Coming was originally created using authentic acoustic instruments and Todd’s Roland Jupiter 8. Unfortunately he sold the Jupiter 8 many years ago, so has re-created the sounds from the track Music of the 8th House using the Buchla Music Easel.

In this episode we are taken on a melodic. ambient, experimental sonic journey with Martha Plachetka, you might know as Panic Girl) and Anatol Locker (Ambiosonics & Spheric Lounge) who have formed modular synth super-group, Lucid Grain. They’ve just released their debut album, Rise and Fall, where they construct ambient vibes that balance the chaos of continually evolving acoustic worlds. The track they "reconstruct" was created specially for this episode of Synth Stories and combines a wide array of eurorack modules resulting in some breath taking and frankly wonderful sounds. Kevin Blumenfeld is a respected composer, orchestrator and synthesist who has worked on films for with Hans Zimmer and Harry Gregson-Williams such as Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, The Ring, Tears of the Sun, Matchstick Men, and Shrek 2, and scored many of his own TV and films including The Walking Dead, and In The Vault. In this episode Kevin takes us on a musical journey using the Moog Mother 32 and one of the stand out tracks from In The Vault, Suspects. Spaceprodigi is Mack Bartsch, a young talented 16 year old musician and analog synthesizer enthusiast who has become well known on social media for creating popular synth performance videos using eurorack modules and synths like the Moog Mother 32. In this episode Mack deconstructs her synth workflows and composition techniques for the powerful and playful track Antimony from her first EP release, Launch, available on Beatport, iTunes and Spotify. Mack focuses on the Moog Mother 32 and the Dave Smith Instruments Prophet 6.

In this episode of Synth Stories, Justin explains and demonstrates how he created the sounds for one of the tracks titled "The New Race" from Showtime's The Dark Net soundtrack using his Buchla 259 complex oscillator and a Roland Juno-6.

Mick Park and Nic Britton are TILT who have been a huge part of the Clubland dance music scene for over 20 years. In this episode of Synth Stories, Mick and Nic have chosen to feature the Volca Keys, a small affordable analog synth from Korg which they used on their remix, Control State, on the Tactal Hots label.

Olivier Mateu is Rodriguez Jr., an accomplished and forward-thinking electronic producer well known for weaving together deep techno, melodic accents and contemplative synth lines. The French artist started his career as one half of The Youngsters releasing two albums no Laurent Garnier’s F-Communications label. And, as Rodriguez Jr. Olivier Mateu has received critical acclaim for his music born from dusty analog synths in his studio that refuses to be pigeon-holed. Olivier opens the lid on his studio workflow, discussing the synths that form the backbone of his sound, in particular the Moog Voyager. He also recreates the synth sounds using the Voyager from the title track of his recent EP, Chain Reaction.

Kris Dirksen has scoring credits including Mad Max: Fury Road, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Banshee and the most recently hit Cinemax series Quarry. In this episode, Kris shares his creative synth process for scoring to picture, the origins of the Buchla Music Easel, and how he used it for the dark, grinding, evolving soundtrack in the critically acclaimed Cinemax series, Quarry.
