Brandon Hegedus’ has hand-built a tribute to the 1962 Ferrari 156 “Sharknose” race car in his Airdrie garage in the last five years. With no original Ferrari 156s in existence, and little details to work with Hegedus focused in on photographs and crumbs of information he could find about Ferrari 156 chassis number three, driven by Ricardo Rodriguez in April 1962. Despite having five other builds under his belt prior to taking on the Ferrari-inspired creation, the 37-year-old carpenter-by-trade stretched his skills on this ride. This car is a buffet of details. We’ll give some insights about a few of them, and you’ll have to flag Hegedus down at a car show to learn more. Jake Neighbours is Airdrie’s newest NHL draftee. When Neighbours was selected 26th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2020 NHL Draft on October 6, he and the other draftees did so in the comfort of their own homes. Yes, COVID-19 has thrown off a lot of best-laid plans, including the NHL Draft, which was cancelled in Montreal in June and made into a global live stream in the fall. Just a couple of kilometres north of where the blacktop ends on 24th Avenue Northwest of Airdrie is a group of students getting back to their roots. Led by teachers Matt Chomistek and Mark Turner, 40 students learn their core subjects with a twist. The ingenuity of the educational venture known as The Farm, a product of Rocky View Schools Community Learning Centre, is rejuvenating the homestead property. Chickens feed in a coop built by the students metres from two Atco trailers where the Grades 9-11 students are engaged in schoolwork. Peewee Storm football coach Nolan Rohl is exceedingly dedicated to coaching football, something he’s been doing since he was 15 when he first followed his older brother Tyrell onto the bench. Fast forward 20 years, and the duo are still passionately coaching the Airdrie Storm peewee football program. Nolan head coaches almost year round to give kids from seven to 12 years old an opportunity in the sport he loves, and doesn’t plan on stopping for 30 more years. The Rohl brothers were also on staff for Team Alberta during the Alberta B.C. Bowl for bantams on May 25, 2019 in Kelowna. In the second part of the interview, I caught up with Nolan on the phone after the ABC Bowl last spring. Led by head coach Jermaine Brown, the roster of about 50 players had 11 suited up from Airdrie to beat B.C. 42-33. They came back from a two-score deficit twice. He gives some game review and a lot of valuable nods to local athletes you parents will love to hear. Derrick Henry is up to his eyeballs in lacrosse. When the now 29-year-old player with the RockyView Knights senior B mens lacrosse team was given the opportunity to coach peewee kids back in 2012, he jumped at it.
