Ep 26: Conversate with Akeem D. Earle Podcast Cross Post - AI, Tech, Data and How it Intersects with the Law w/ Amber Ivey
In this week's episode, I am posting a conversation I had on the new podcast Conversate with Akeem D. Earle about the importance of lawyers keeping up with technology to ensure that people have access to justice. This conversation gets live and in living color (if you don't get it, you don't get it) as I speak my mind and thoughts on many different topics. I decided to post this episode on MLK Jr. Day because the advancements in technology have brought about new challenges and opportunities for realizing Dr. King's vision of a just and equal society. For example, there have been a lot of conversations about banning ChatGPT in schools. At the same time, the "world's first robot lawyer" powered by artificial intelligence is helping a person who doesn't have a lawyer represent themselves in a traffic case. (Check out DoNotPay for more information.) Technology is pivotal in helping improve access to justice, and sadly, many lawyers need to catch up in this area. Check out this episode as we discuss why I chose not to practice law, the future of AI in the courtroom, the importance of rest in between positions and more!More about Amber IveyAmber Ivey is a prominent thinker, voice, and leader of cultural change, an expert in data utilization and management, while also being an equitable leader. Ivey was born in Bethesda, Maryland. She earned an undergraduate degree from Old Dominion University, a graduate degree from the University of Maryland College Park, and a law degree from the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. In 2020, Amber Ivey ran for election to the U.S. House to represent Maryland's 7th Congressional District. While in law school Amber realized she wanted to support people in a different way and decided to serve in the intersection of data, tech, law, and public policy. She now serves as a Vice President for a non profit organization focused on social impact. She is also the founder of Ivey Collective which is a consulting agency that provides action plans to businesses and government agencies through data audits and is the host of AI: Decodes the System podcast @aidecodes, which breaks down topics related to data, tech, law, and public policy in plain language. Ep 25: Decoding the Book "Can We Trust AI?" and How Teachers and Doctors Can Leverage the Technology for Better Outcomes
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, Dr. Rama Chellappa, author of Can We Trust AI?, and AI decode how Dr. Chellappa got involved in artificial intelligence (AI) research and why he decided to write a book on if we can trust AI? During the conversation, Dr. Chellappa breaks down AI and how, contrary to popular belief, the technology has been around for over 60 years and is ready to start receiving social security. Dr. Chellappa talks about how we work with AI today, will work with the technology in the future, and why we all need to understand how to work with AI just like we interact with the internet and cell phones. He also discussed the importance of responsible AI and training algorithms to be less biased. One of my favorite insights from the conversation is Dr. Chellappa's moonshot idea that classrooms should have one physical teacher and thirty virtual teachers. Can we trust AI? Check out the episode.More about Dr. Rama ChellappaRama Chellappa, PhD (Potomac, MD), is a pioneering researcher and inventor in the fields of computer vision, artificial intelligence and machine learning. A Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in electrical, computer, and biomedical engineering, he is also the chief scientist at the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy and a member of the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare. Ep 24 - AI Artists Decoded: AI is storming the art world with Lensa App and Dall-e, but what does this mean for humans?
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, AI does a solo episode where she decodes the topic of AI artist. You may have heard a lot of buzz around Lensa and Dall-e and the rise of AI artist. If you want AI to decode a topic, please send an email to ai@aidecodes.com.    A lot of you have been using the Lensa app or Dall-e and are a little interested in learning more about AI artists. So, I wanted to do a quick episode to discuss the pros, cons, and privacy concerns of what folks call AI artists. So here we go. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to revolutionize the field of art, opening up new possibilities for creation and expression. However, the use of AI in the arts also raises a number of important questions and concerns. Here are some of the pros and cons of an AI artist: Pros: AI artists can create unique and original works that may not be possible with traditional methods. For example, an AI artist may be able to generate completely new styles or forms of art that have never been seen before. AI artists can create art faster and more efficiently than human artists. This can be especially useful for projects that require a large amount of art to be produced in a short amount of time, such as video games or animated films. AI artists can create art that is more consistent and accurate than human artists. For example, an AI artist may be able to generate realistic images or animations with greater consistency than a human artist, who may be prone to mistakes or variations in quality. Cons: AI artists may lack the human touch and emotional depth that many people value in art. Some people argue that art is a deeply personal and human experience, and that works created by AI may lack the emotional depth and meaning that human artists are able to convey. AI artists may replace or compete with human artists, leading to job loss and financial hardship for some artists. While AI artists may be able to create art more efficiently and cheaply than human artists, this could lead to a reduction in demand for human artists and potentially harm their livelihoods. There are also concerns about the ethical implications of AI artists, such as the potential for AI to replicate or steal the work of human artists without proper attribution or compensation. Overall, the use of AI in the arts has the potential to bring about significant advances and new possibilities, but it also raises a number of important questions and concerns that need to be carefully considered. Ep: 22 - NFT Decoded: What is an NFT and Why You Should Care?
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, AI does a solo episode where she decodes the topic of NFTs. If you want AI to decode a topic, please send an email to ai@aidecodes.com.   What is an NFT? NFT stands for nonfungible token. Simply put, it is a unique digital asset that cannot be replaced by another identical asset. This makes them perfect for representing unique items, such as collectibles or digital art. NFTs are created on blockchain platforms like Ethereum and EOS. These platforms allow developers to create decentralized applications (dApps) that use NFTs. So why should you care about NFTs? Here are three reasons:1. NFTs are immutable, meaning they cannot be counterfeit or altered. This makes them much more secure than traditional assets like fiat currency or even gold.2. NFTs are transferrable and can be easily bought, sold, or traded. This makes them very liquid and gives them the potential to become a new type of currency.3. NFTs are programmable, meaning they can be used to represent anything from land ownership to loyalty points. This gives them a lot of potential applications that we have only just begun to explore. So there you have it! NFTs are a new type of asset with a lot of potential. Keep an eye on this space, as NFTs are sure to revolutionize the way we interact with digital assets.Help me become the #1 (number one) podcast and podcaster for technology, public policy, data, law, and culture. Ep 14: Decoding how 50% of Americans say they are Independent but have to choose between two political parties
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, AI shares a recording of a panel she moderated for Open Primaries with John Opdycke, Jeremy Gruber, Danny Ortega, and Mayor Danny Holt. The conversation covered a groundbreaking new report from the Open Primaries Education Fund -The Next Great Migration: The Rise of Independent Voters.  This report lays out the dramatic increase in Americans from diverse backgrounds and politics registering to vote as independents.  The short bios from the panelist are listed below: David Holt has been the Mayor of Oklahoma City since 2018, and for his first year in office was the youngest mayor of a U.S. city over 500,000. A Republican, Holt is also Oklahoma City’s first Native American mayor. He served in the Oklahoma Senate from 2010 to 2018. Danny Ortega, an attorney and longtime advocate for community empowerment based in Phoenix, Arizona.  He is the former Board Chair of Unidos US (formerly National Council of La Raza). He also serves on the Board of Directors of  the Arizona Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and Los Abogados Hispanic Bar Foundation. Jeremy Gruber, Senior Vice President of Open Primaries and co-author with Opdycke of The Next Great Migration: The Rise of Independent Voters. John Opdycke, President of Open Primaries and Senior Advisor to the Electoral Innovation Lab at Princeton University. Event description: The Zoom event paired the authors of this new research with leading political figures for an engaging conversation on how to dismantle the partisan barriers that are keeping Americans apart.Independent voters are now the largest or second largest group of voters in half the states and will be the largest or second largest group of voters in almost every state in the country within a few years at current rates of growth. Party registration is declining in both red and blue states.  Yet we continue to operate within an electoral framework--and corresponding media paradigm--that assumes that party membership is the default.  This is most obvious in closed primaries but it infects all aspects of politics including redistricting, campaign finance laws and procedures, election administration and enforcement--even who is allowed to serve as a poll worker on election day.  Our election system does not reflect America. This has a profound effect on partisanship and polarization. Appreciating why so many Americans are identifying as independents--and choosing to register to vote as such despite the negative consequences--is important for political reformers, journalists, candidates and elected officials working to chart a new path forward.Social Media AI: Decodes the System: Website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok Find us on Clubhouse at @AiDecodes. Ep 13: Decoding how technology is screaming to the world, I'm not racist (5 Minute Hack)
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, AI breaks from her regularly scheduled program to talk about how humans can train algorithms in a way that amplifies current and historical biases. This episode is a companion podcast to Ep 12: (Part 1) Decoding how machines only learning white faces can lead to bad outcomes for other races. To remove bias in technology, we need to have different people at the table with different viewpoints. This work is not easy, but it is necessary.Social Media AI: Decodes the System: Website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok Find us on Clubhouse at @AiDecodes. Ep 12: (Part 1) Decoding how machines only learning white faces can lead to bad outcomes for other races
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, Avery Smith, creator of Melalogic--a Habit-Tracker for Skin Care--and AI decode how when his wife was diagnosed and passed from skin cancer, Avery sought ways to use his software engineering skills to improve the health outcomes of people similar to the family that he lost. In part one, they talk about how Avery is currently building Melalogic, a Habit-Tracker for Skin Care. It enables Black People to be their healthcare advocate through nuanced education, behavior modification, and clinical support on caring for their skin in a more personalized and engaging way.Avery envisions that Melalogic will use machine learning and image recognition to help trained doctors more accurately and efficiently pre-diagnose skin conditions in Black People at their earliest stages, leading to lower mortality rates.More about AveryAvery Smith started coding in 1999 as a hobby to promote his graphic design. Years later, he has two degrees and extensive software development experience through his work with the rescue team for President Obama's Healthcare.gov website and with the U.S. Small Business Administration, TravelChannel.com, and the Library of Congress. He co-authored a research paper with a leading dermatologist entitled, "Machine Learning and Health Care Disparities in Dermatology," published by the American Medical Association. Ep 10: Decoding how Game Stop, Reddit, and Robinhood are robbing from the rich and giving to the not so poor while shaking up Wall Street
On this episode of AI: Decodes the System, AI breaks from her regularly scheduled program to talk about how a thread on Reddit called Wall Street Bets (which was recently banned by Discord and moved over to Twitter) helped take Game Stop from less than 40 dollars to over 300 in just five days. This increase happened because users used social media to rally young people around buying stocks that matter to them. The most notable being Game Stop. Access to apps like Robin Hood also helped make these stocks easier to purchase.  As a result, the thread helped contribute to billions of dollars in losses for hedge funds and thousands/millions made for everyday people, and even billions for investors who owned a substantial amount of shares in Game Stop stock. Short squeeze.Edit: This podcast was recorded before Robinhood banned users from buying Game Stop.  Social Media AI: Decodes the System: Website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok Find us on Clubhouse at @AiDecodes.
