In this episode, Andrew and John talk about work/corporate culture, why people come into an office, what motivates a team and what's important beyond "doing the work". Silicon Valley and tech startups have introduced a whole new standard of perks and working culture that traditional companies are struggling to be able to offer. #2 YouTube, Agency Life, Profitability & Client Happiness
Do you want to start your own company? Or play it safe at "big corporate"? Andrew and I talk about agency life and the struggles with running our own shops. We talk about profitability and how that relates to agency and client happiness. And, as past freelancers ourselves, we also talk about the relationship contractors play and how to effectively manage those relationships. Andrew gets into some odd YouTube fetishes and conspiracies from his own YouTube fame and how it invaded his life (it's not as bad as it sounds) We get into the intricate workings of both /Archive Digital and Mellenger Interactive and the different ways we manage operations and offer value to clients. John touches on strategies in product and service delivery and the problems teams face in doing so. Asking questions about process, expectations and deadlines is key. We touch on team culture and keeping work exciting for everyone involved. The importance of offering the best perks to staff/partners and maintaining a "People Over Profit" attitude is so CORE to the success of every company in our space. Andrew talks about the main differences between working at "big corporate" vs starting his own agency and working with people he wants to and the cost that comes along with that. #3 Data vs Creative, Project Management & Marshmallows
Andrew and John talk about data and creative and how both departments are inherently intertwined. We touch on user-experience, user-behavior and thinking about user intent while developing digital strategies. Guitar Hero does come up at one point, along with creative thinking and phenomenal ideas that ultimately get wasted in advertising for various reasons. The role that data and creative play in today's advertising/marketing landscape can't be ignored yet there is a massive gap in how these two departments speak to each other. It's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind and forget how these two CORE components work with each other. We go through the importance of setting client expectations and not wasting too much time educating clients and partners on the actual implementation of work. Dancing the Account Management dance can be a tricky one, and ultimately you have to keep track of time and hours in order to maintain project flow and profitability. #1 Ethernet, Mellenger Interview, Value-Based Pricing & Dad Jokes
In this episode of /Agency Future, John interviews Andrew about his past experience developing complex websites in the 90s and how he's built his career from there. We talk about value-based pricing and client pricing strategies and pay homage to Charles P. Thacker: inventor of ethernet. Andrew talks about early applications and references how strongly IMDB has stood the test of time. He talks about how its inspired a lot of builds since discovering it. We get into Andrew's CORE development process and how being a rockstar programmer isn't always advantageous in development and how some of the best user-experiences don't even involve complex coding. John references and discusses Chris Do's approach to value-based pricing and how people can articulate it to new clients as well as how freelancers and contractors can quantify the value of their work. Oh, and Dad jokes all around. If you guys enjoyed this Podcast, please share it with your friends and colleagues!
