Episode 2: The American Dream is not for Americans
In Episode 2, immigrants from Nigeria, Kenya, Liberia and an American discuss what the 'American Dream' means to each of them...the similarities are undeniable! We also discuss socio-economicthe Chinese impact on the mythical 'American Dream.'
It's increasingly difficult for Americans to realize the 'American Dream' given all of the comfort and 'commodities' they grow up with and grow accustomed to...Even poverty in the United States cannot begin to compare to poverty in 3rd world countries; the poor in the US still have electricity, public transportation, financial aid, food stamps, free water, internet and so many things available to them that only the rich in poor countries can possibly comprehend...
We immigrants that grew up in poor countries are blown away by the opportunities here in America...If you work hard, chances are that you will succeed and make a good living for yourself. And to us, that opportunity, that promise that if you work hard, you can succeed and positively impact your families back in your home countries, is THE AMERICAN DREAM! So in short, the 'American Dream' has never really been for Americans (socioeconomic status plays a much bigger role to the 'American Dream' myth to Americans...the less you have, the less you tend to believe in the 'American Dream'!)
