A Haunted Existence Ep 4 - Abegavenny
Episode 4 - Abergavenny Evalaution of a workshop exploring a welsh gay Witch hunt. In 1942, the Welsh town of Abergavenny was scandalised by disclosures after the arrest of over twenty youths and men on charges relating to homosexual activity and corrupting boys. George Rowe, the 40-year-old manager of Abergavenny's Coliseum cinema was at the centre of a Police enquiry after one of the page-boys complained about being molested. The boy's complaint turned into a witch-hunt of 'queers' across Britain revealing a oddball mix of abused and abusers; a farmer, a clerk, two chefs, a fireman, several serving soldiers, a hairdresser, an actor and others were arrested and brought back to Abergavenny, where almost all the offences were committed. Episode 2 - Diary of William Halle Evaluation of the workshops looking a diary of a local gay man in Wandsworth. Diaries recording Halle's daily life, working as an artist and referring to his work at the [telephone] Exchange. He writes about trying to sell paintings to galleries, organising exhibitions and records his worries over money, his health and his sister, who lived in South Africa. The diaries also record his thoughts on various friendships and sexual relationships." "William Halle was born in Hastings in 1912, and lived there with his mother and sister, Annette. His father left when he was a child. From the 1960s, possibly earlier, he lived at 7a Mexfield Road, Wandsworth and also had an art studio in Battersea. He worked as an artist and also wrote novels, making several attempts to get his writing published. A haunted Existence Podcast - Episode 1 - A Haunted Existence A story behind the Haunted Existence theatre show and the research methods employed by Historian Jeanie Sinclair and how Theatre maker transformed this research into a theatre show. In the early 1950s, 17-year-old Geoffrey Patrick Williamson was on the Exeter to Bristol train when he got into a conversation with another man, also travelling in his train compartment, who accused Geoffrey of making ‘improper approaches’. The other man was a Railway Officer in plain clothes. Geoffrey was arrested at the next stop, Taunton. When questioned, Williamson revealed the names of men he had had sex with, so beginning a domino effect of arrests, prison sentences, aversion therapy and suicide.
