Ep. 203: Do You Have a Judas in Your Circle?
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 203, “Do You Have a Judas in Your Circle?” Kim discusses one of the traitors in King David’s inner circle, comparing him to the most infamous traitor of all time, Judas Iscariot. Each of us needs to use a discerning spirit, led by the Holy Spirit, to avoid trusting those with traitors tendencies.   Our focal verses for this week are varied:   12 While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, one of David’s counselors who lived in Giloh. Soon many others also joined Absalom, and the conspiracy gained momentum. (2 Samuel 15:12)   Absalom followed Ahithophel’s advice, just as David had done. For every word Ahithophel spoke seemed as wise as though it had come directly from the mouth of God. (2 Samuel 16:23)   When Ahithophel realized that his advice had not been followed, he saddled his donkey, went to his hometown, set his affairs in order, and hanged himself. He died there and was buried in the family tomb. (2 Samuel 17:23) WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Prayerfully ask the Lord to reveal any Judases in your life and how to best deal with them.   SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:   “Encouraging Others in Loving Jesus” YouTube Channel continues to grow. Check it out at https://www.youtube.com/@EncouragingOthersInLovingJesus   Additional Resources:   13 Afterward Jesus went up on a mountain and called out the ones he wanted to go with him. And they came to him. 14 Then he appointed twelve of them and called them his apostles. They were to accompany him, and he would send them out to preach, 15 giving them authority to cast out demons. 16 These are the twelve he chose:…19 Judas Iscariot (who later betrayed him). (Mark 3:16a-19) 4 But Judas Iscariot, the disciple who would soon betray him, said, 5 “That perfume was worth a year’s wages. It should have been sold and the money given to the poor.” 6 Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. (John 12:4-6) Judas - Matthew 26-27 Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me. Ep. 202: How Do You SEE People?
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 202, “How Do You SEE People?” Kim discusses the temptation every one of us experiences regarding how we SEE people. Absalom appears to have only seen people as a means to an end, which is a temptation for many. Another struggle is to not SEE people at all, but to be so focused on me, me, me, me that we miss all the unique people around us for whom Christ died.   The primary scripture text is 2 Samuel 15:1-12 with 2-6 as the focal verses:   2 He got up early every morning and went out to the gate of the city. When people brought a case to the king for judgment, Absalom would ask where in Israel they were from, and they would tell him their tribe. 3 Then Absalom would say, “You’ve really got a strong case here! It’s too bad the king doesn’t have anyone to hear it. 4 I wish I were the judge. Then everyone could bring their cases to me for judgment, and I would give them justice!” 5 When people tried to bow before him, Absalom wouldn’t let them. Instead, he took them by the hand and kissed them. 6 Absalom did this with everyone who came to the king for judgment, and so he stole the hearts of all the people of Israel. Ep. 201: Where Did the ”Face Down a Giant Warrior” Faith Go?
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 201, “Where Did the ‘Face Down a Giant Warrior’ Faith Go?” Kim discusses the differences between the faith David displayed when he faced Goliath (1 Samuel 17) and the lack of faith he displayed as he fled from Jerusalem and Absalom (2 Samuel 15:13-15). What did and did not happen in the life of David to bring him to this sad day? How about you? Is your faith growing or have your faith muscles atrophied? What will you do today to prevent the “What happened?” question from being an issue?   The primary scripture text is 2 Samuel 15:13-15:   13 A messenger soon arrived in Jerusalem to tell David, “All Israel has joined Absalom in a conspiracy against you!” 14 “Then we must flee at once, or it will be too late!” David urged his men. “Hurry! If we get out of the city before Absalom arrives, both we and the city of Jerusalem will be spared from disaster.” 15 “We are with you,” his advisers replied. “Do what you think is best.” WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Where did your "face down a giant warrior" faith go?   SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT:   “Encouraging Others in Loving Jesus” YouTube Channel has launched! SHOW NOTES: In Podcast Episode 199, “Beware of the Backstabbers!” Kim discusses the importance of being wise regarding all relationships, no matter whether personal or otherwise. Also, beware of the temptation to stab another’s back. The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 15:1-12 with verses 6, 10-12 as the focal verses: 6 Absalom did this with everyone who came to the king for judgment, and so he stole the hearts of all the people of Israel. 10 But while he was there, he sent secret messengers to all the tribes of Israel to stir up a rebellion against the king. “As soon as you hear the ram’s horn,” his message read, “you are to say, ‘Absalom has been crowned king in Hebron.’” 11 He took 200 men from Jerusalem with him as guests, but they knew nothing of his intentions. 12 While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel, one of David’s counselors who lived in Giloh. Ep. 198: Is Reconciliation Always the Right Choice?
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 198, “Is Reconciliation Always the Right Choice?” Kim discusses the importance of understanding the difference between forgiveness and reconciliation. King David chose to reconcile with his estranged son Absalom, but it is not healthy for all relationships to be reconciled. Still, others are not reconcilable because at least one party is not willing.   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 14:25-33 with verse 33 as the focal verse:   33 So Joab told the king what Absalom had said. Then at last David summoned Absalom, who came and bowed low before the king, and the king kissed him. Ep. 197: The Importance of Setting Interpersonal Boundaries
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 197, “The Importance of Setting Interpersonal Boundaries,” Kim discusses the strong boundary King David initially set when he let his estranged son Absalom return to Jerusalem. Whether David was right or wrong in this boundary is not ours to determine, but Kim wants to challenge each listener to use this podcast as an encouragement to get with the Lord and prayerfully reassess his or her interpersonal boundaries.   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 14:21-24 with verse 24 as the focal verse:   24 But the king gave this order: “Absalom may go to his own house, but he must never come into my presence.” So Absalom did not see the king. Ep. 194: The Day Family Drama Turned Deadly
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 194, “The Day Family Drama Turned Deadly,” Kim discusses the dangers of family drama. King David’s family could be pictured in  a family therapy textbook showing how to be a dysfunctional family. Yet, the efforts of one family member intervening for the good could have changed the entire dynamic. Will you be the one to make the change for the good?   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 13:23-39 with 29 as the focal verse:   29 So at Absalom’s signal they murdered Amnon. Then the other sons of the king jumped on their mules and fled. WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   What is one action you can do to diffuse any current family drama?   Additional Resources:   11 “This is what the Lord says: Because of what you have done, I will cause your own household to rebel against you. Ep. 193: ”Just Keep Quiet” and Other Bad Advice
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 193, “‘Just Keep Quiet’ and Other Bad Advice,” Kim discusses the unhealthy responses of Absalom and King David to the sexual violation of Tamar. Instead of surrounding Tamar in love and protection, Absalom told her to “be quiet” and not take the offense to heart. David became “very angry” but didn’t appear to do anything healthy or helpful in his anger. Which character in the story do you most relate? How does the Lord want you to respond?   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 13:18-22 with 20 as the focal verse:   20 Her brother Absalom saw her and asked, “Is it true that Amnon has been with you? Well, my sister, keep quiet for now, since he’s your brother. Don’t you worry about it.” So Tamar lived as a desolate woman in her brother Absalom’s house. SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 192, “The Reality Blindness of Out of Control Emotions,” Kim discusses the dangers of allowing your emotions to blind you to reality. In today’s story, we see how Amnon’s lack of emotional control led to his deplorable choices and the destruction of parts of Tamar she would not recover.   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 13:6-15 with 15 as the focal verse:   15 Then suddenly Amnon’s love turned to hate, and he hated her even more than he had loved her. “Get out of here!” he snarled at her. Ep. 191: You Don’t Need Friends Like That
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 191, “You Don’t Need Friends Like That,” Kim discusses the dangers of allowing the wrong friends to influence you. Do you have more Jonathans (good company) in your life or Jonadabs (bad company)?   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 13:1-5 with 5 as the focal verse:   5 “Well,” Jonadab said, “I’ll tell you what to do. Go back to bed and pretend you are ill. When your father comes to see you, ask him to let Tamar come and prepare some food for you. Tell him you’ll feel better if she prepares it as you watch and feeds you with her own hands.” WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Take a prayerful look at your friend map. Ep. 190: Secure and Humble Enough to Point to Another
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 190, “Secure and Humble Enough to Point to Another,” Kim discusses the human tendency to hog the glory, either due to insecurity or unhealthy pride. In today’s text, we see Joab stepping aside to allow David to take the glory for the Ammonite victory. Then, we will look at a similar text showing John the Baptist pointing all glory to Jesus.   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 12:26-31 with 28 as the focal verse:   28 Now bring the rest of the army and capture the city. Otherwise, I will capture it and get credit for the victory.” WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Examine your life. Are you more likely to show your insecurity and try to hog the glory or are you secure enough to point the glory toward another?   Additional Resources:   In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem. (2 Samuel 11:1) 27 John replied, “No one can receive anything unless God gives it from heaven. 28 You yourselves know how plainly I told you, ‘I am not the Messiah. I am only here to prepare the way for him.’ 29 It is the bridegroom who marries the bride, and the bridegroom’s friend is simply glad to stand with him and hear his vows. Therefore, I am filled with joy at his success. 30 He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. Ep. 189: Life on the Other Side of a Broken and Repentant Heart
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 189, “Life on the Other Side of a Broken and Repentant Heart,” Kim discusses the gift of the Lord of an abundant life after a true experience of brokenness and surrender. So many of us stop short of a broken and repentant heart and hope to just nod at God, and He will remove the consequences of our actions. Yet, in order to experience an abundant life, you must humbly agree with the Lord regarding your sin and commit to follow Him wholeheartedly. King David experienced the Lord’s love and favor when he fell upon the mercy of the Lord.   The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 12:24-25:   24 Then David comforted Bathsheba, his wife, and slept with her. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son, and David named him Solomon. The Lord loved the child 25 and sent word through Nathan the prophet that they should name him Jedidiah (which means “beloved of the Lord”), as the Lord had commanded. Ep. 187: Create in Me a Clean Heart
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 187, “Create in Me a Clean Heart,” Kim discusses importance of responding to the Lord’s conviction with a broken and repentant spirit. David’s willingness to expose his brokenness for all Israel to see and learn from is inspiring. Also, using his words to pray for the hearts of others is a practical application of the text also.    The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 12:13 and Psalm 51 with 10, 12, and 17 as the focal verses:   “Then David confessed to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” Nathan replied, “Yes, but the Lord has forgiven you, and you won’t die for this sin.”  (2 Samuel 12:13)   Create in me a clean heart, O God.     Renew a loyal spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10)   Restore to me the joy of your salvation,     and make me willing to obey you. (Psalm 51:12)   The sacrifice you desire is a broken spirit.     You will not reject a broken and repentant heart, O God. (Psalm 51:17) WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Pray this: “Lord, please create in me a clean heart and renew a loyal spirit within me. Please restore to me the joy of Your salvation and make me willing to obey You.”    Additional Resources:   INSTAGRAM -  https://www.instagram.com/encouragingothersinlovingjesus/ For more on the Overcast podcast app, go to https://overcast.fm/ Tim Tebow Foundation Rescue Team - Sign up to be a Human Trafficking Prayer Warrior I WANT TO BEGIN A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST.    RESOURCES USED FOR BOOK OF 1 & 2 Samuel PODCASTS: “The Wiersbe Bible Commentary: The Complete Old Testament OT in One Volume” “The Tony Evans Bible Commentary: Advancing God’s Kingdom Agenda” “Life Application Study Bible” “The Swindoll Study Bible: NLT” by Charles R. Ep. 186: The Art of Godly Confrontation
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 186, “The Art of Godly Confrontation,” Kim discusses the confrontation between the prophet Nathan and King David. Confrontation is something the majority of us would rather avoid, but sometimes it is necessary.    The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 12:1-12 with 1-4 as the focal verses.   1 So the Lord sent Nathan the prophet to tell David this story: “There were two men in a certain town. One was rich, and one was poor. 2 The rich man owned a great many sheep and cattle. 3 The poor man owned nothing but one little lamb he had bought. He raised that little lamb, and it grew up with his children. It ate from the man’s own plate and drank from his cup. He cuddled it in his arms like a baby daughter. 4 One day a guest arrived at the home of the rich man. But instead of killing an animal from his own flock or herd, he took the poor man’s lamb and killed it and prepared it for his guest.” WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Determine whether there is someone in your life you need to confront in a Godly manner.    Additional Resources:   INSTAGRAM -  https://www.instagram.com/encouragingothersinlovingjesus/ For more on the Overcast podcast app, go to https://overcast.fm/ Tim Tebow Foundation Rescue Team - Sign up to be a Human Trafficking Prayer Warrior I WANT TO BEGIN A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST. Ep. 185: Operation Royal Cover-Up
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 185, “Operation Royal Cover-Up,” Kim discusses the repeated attempts by King David to cover up his adulterous taking of Bathsheba, Uriah’s wife. It is terribly sad to see all the sins committed by David in his attempts to cover up his affair and all those he involved in the cover-up. Prayerfully consider how you acted as David, either attempting to cover up your own sins or assisting others in covering theirs.    The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11:1-27 with 6-7, 12-13, and 14-15 as the focal verses.   6 Then David sent word to Joab: “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” So Joab sent him to David. 7 When Uriah arrived, David asked him how Joab and the army were getting along and how the war was progressing.    12 “Well, stay here today,” David told him, “and tomorrow you may return to the army.” So Uriah stayed in Jerusalem that day and the next. 13 Then David invited him to dinner and got him drunk. But even then he couldn’t get Uriah to go home to his wife. Again he slept at the palace entrance with the king’s palace guard.   14 So the next morning David wrote a letter to Joab and gave it to Uriah to deliver. 15 The letter instructed Joab, “Station Uriah on the front lines where the battle is fiercest. Then pull back so that he will be killed.”   ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:   3 When I refused to confess my sin,     my body wasted away,     and I groaned all day long. 4 Day and night your hand of discipline was heavy on me.     My strength evaporated like water in the summer heat. Interlude 5 Finally, I confessed all my sins to you     and stopped trying to hide my guilt. I said to myself, “I will confess my rebellion to the Lord.”     And you forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Interlude (Ps. 32:3-5) WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Is there a cover-up in your life that you have failed to admit, even to God? Ep. 184: Perceived Personal Power Can Lead to Spiritual Numbness
SHOW NOTES:   In Podcast Episode 184, “Perceived Personal Power Can Lead to Spiritual Numbness,” Kim discusses the dangers of bowing to the idol of personal power. King David had moved from the teenage boy standing up to the bully Goliath only in the power of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies to a king abusing his power in a sexual manner. This week’s study has caused Kim to see the story of David and Bathsheba in a whole new, concerning light.    The primary scripture text for this episode is 2 Samuel 11:3-5 with 4 as the focal verse.   4 Then David sent messengers to get her; and when she came to the palace, he slept with her. She had just completed the purification rites after having her menstrual period. Then she returned home.    ADDITIONAL VERSES, etc.:   45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! (1 Samuel 17:45-46) WEEKLY ASSIGNMENT FEATURE:   Reflect upon the power differential between King David and Bathsheba. What are some modern-day examples?   Additional Resources:   “In our members there is a slumbering inclination towards desire which is both sudden and fierce. With irresistible power, desire seizes mastery over the flesh. All at once a secret, smoldering fire is kindled. The flesh burns and is in flames…Joy in God is…extinguished in us and we seek all our joy in the creature. At this moment God is quite unreal to us…Satan does not here fill us with hatred of God, but with forgetfulness of God…The lust thus aroused enveloped the mind and will of man in deepest darkness. The powers of clear discrimination and of decision are taken from us…It is here that everything within me rises up against the word of God.” (Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Creation and Fall: Temptation, Two Biblical Studies, pg. 33)    Bathsheba’s Story: Surviving Abuse and Loss by Diana R.
