I know what to do but can’t make myself do it
A listener asked if there were terms to describe this. Yes, there are but you don’t want them associated with your name! Here are some steps to take when you are hesitating the action that will lead you to new success. Episode #760 January 15, 2021 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: What does it mean when someone knows what to do but doesn’t do it? Yes, there is definitely a term for that, and you don’t want any of them attached to your name because they sound like procrastinator and sluggard. Here are some of the reasons why we get stuck and what to do about it: 1. Being comfortable — not having a burning desire. Without a burning desire, many of us get stuck in what I call comfortable misery. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible. It’s just comfortable misery. That’s why a lot of times it takes some kind of inciting incident, some kind of a precipitating situation. before we take action. That’s why I hear from so many of you who lost a job and it’s a terrible, horrible thing and then two months later you tell me that’s the best thing that ever happened to you because it prompted you to look at options. Now you’re doing something way more fulfilling, way more profitable than you’ve ever done in your life. 2. Distractions. There are a whole lot of other things that get our attention, and we all are busy. I would encourage you to share what your idea is — share what it is you want to do with other people so you have a little bit of built in accountability. We have a lot of people do that in Eagles Community to get some gentle nudging to continue moving forward. 3. Negativity. Sometimes we know what the negative things would be if we move forward and it didn’t work out as an example, but as you’ve heard me talk about many times here, this is the law of attraction. If you think about the downside, you tend to draw those things toward you. That can cause you to get stuck as well. 4. Laziness Sometimes it comes down to just lack of ambition.. There are few things that make me cringe more than that — the idea of being what the Bible describes as a sluggard. 5. Uncertainty This can be another thing holding you back or keeping you stuck. When you find yourself making excuses and you find that you fear something, that’s where you have to decide — DECIDE. The word comes from the same word as homicide and suicide. It means something is going to die. You’re going to kill something. You’re going to kill the fear, negativity, uncertainty or whatever it is that’s holding you back and keeping you stuck. If you have burning desire, then you can work through the excuses you’ve been making and get through the fear that seems to come with that. You don’t have to make the fear go away. But you decide not to let it hold you back any longer. I have struggled with a lack of commitment and find myself in the same place I was a year ago. I think I’ve been stuck so long in this state that I can’t remember my passions. When I grew up, we never talked about joy and fulfillment and meaning and purpose in the work that we did. You just worked because you needed to — because it’s what’s responsible. You do whatever it takes. So you just bite the bullet and go to the salt mine every morning with your little lunch box. I don’t believe that. So I had to grow out of that. I want to encourage you to do so as well, As I write about in Wisdom Meets Passion, your passion often is more developed than it is discovered. So it’s not like it’s there full blown and you magically discover what that is. No, you start moving toward things that you’re interested in. As you do those and develop competencies and skill in an area, your passion will grow along with that. So passion is like the intersection of multiple curiosities. But having passion by itself doesn’t mean anything. Like I talked about in my recent webinar about finding your sweet spot you can have a hobby. You can have an area of interest, but it doesn’t do much to move the needle or change the world until it’s combined with talent and money. Our 20 year old son came home for Christmas break and informed us he will not be going back to college for spring semester. I sent her a copy of No More Dreaded Mondays for her son. No More Dreaded Mondays came after 48 Days To the Work You Love which is primarily focused on getting a traditional job. Well, a lot of people are saying, I’m not sure I want another job. You know, I’m tired of being jerked around. I knowledge that right at the very end in the last two chapters of 48 Days To the Work You Love. If you’re thinking you aren’t sure you want another job, there are other options. So the next book that I wrote was No More Dreaded Mondays, in which I talked about how you take an idea and turn it into profitable, meaningful, fulfilling work. We see the world as we are
How To Fight Burnout and Be More Productive We can change how we see the world by changing who we are. I share my experience in rejecting my diagnoses of fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s disease and Epstein-bar. I’ve got 7 things I used to come back from extreme fatigue and burnout to vibrant energy and creativity and be more productive. Episode #759 January 08, 2021 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. How can I be more productive? What if I’m experiencing burn-out? I went through a horrendous experience a couple of years ago. I’ve never talked about this on my podcast in terms of really explaining what happened two years ago when I realized I was in trouble. It’s embarrassing to admit this. I’m the guy who talks about finding work and a life you love As a writer and a coach, I get to choose my work and how I spend my time. And fortunately as the author of 48 Days to the Work You Love I do love my work Because of that, it really came to me as somewhat of a shock when I was experiencing burnout. I mean, I had all the classic symptoms: fatigue, headaches, stuffy, sinuses, irritability, fitful sleep, unexplained severe pain in my shoulders and wrist, a decreased appetite, cynicism, a desire to pull back from engagement. My functioning dropped to probably 30% of what I was capable of previously. I was sleeping 10 to 12 hours a night and then taking a nap in the morning and another one in the afternoon. Now, obviously I wanted to fix this to get back to the level of speaking, writing, and coaching, that built my reputation. I felt like I had aged more in one year than I had the previous 10. I saw my neurologist, physical therapist, internist, nutritionist, chiropractor, massage therapist, energy healer, and dentist. I had blood tests, heart scans, x-rays, an MRI and a whole lot more. All the tests came back normal. My trusted family doctor of 30 years laughed and told me to quit complaining. I was just getting old. I wasn’t going to be content. The interesting thing is everyone was willing to give me medication — prescriptions to just mask the pain. I was given a diagnosis of fibromyalgia, Hashimoto’s disease and Epstein-Barr. I went to the physical therapist and I’d spend an hour, hour and a half there three times a week. And I was getting a little bit more movement, but it was extremely slow. Even my walking gate was pretty pathetic and I was just stiff all over. I even quit driving my Corvette because it was too difficult to get in and out of. So I was just driving an SUV that we had on our property. That’s really telling for me because I so enjoy driving fun cars, but I stopped driving my Corvette because of the way I was feeling. I had a conversation with a high-level hospital administrative executive doctor, and he said the symptoms I had really indicated something more systemic going on. This doctor suggested that I get in and get some other tests done immediately — more blood work and more x-rays to rule out some kind of mass. He suspected perhaps even some kind of cancer or leukemia. I was pretty appalled at the unconnected variety of treatments. Everyone was looking at me through their own lens. The neurologist was looking for neurological things. Everybody was looking for something that lined up with their area of expertise, but no one was bringing it all together. No one asked about my mindset. No one asked about negative thinking, work habits, stress producers, important relationships or spiritual practices. I was convinced there had to be a better way. There had to be an integrated approach to include body, mind, and spirit. Then I was introduced by my son, Kevin, to Dr. Randy James, who he works with in Woodland Park, Colorado. He’s a functional medicine doctor. First, he asked for a long conversation. He didn’t want to see any of the test results that I had, all the lab results that I had, x-rays, MRIs, etc. He didn’t want to see any of that. He wanted to talk to me. He talked to me for two to three hours. He wanted to hear about those very things that were absent as the other providers seem to view me just as a biochemical mass. So we talked about my work habits. Yes. I love my work, but I would rationalize working 14 hours a day because I love my work. Why would I need a vacation from my work? Why would I need a day off? So I was way out of balance. Dr. James started carefully guided me into new patterns of diet and introduced some key supplements. Yes, we did extensive tests that gave indicators of some critical deficiencies and sensitivities, but we talked about modified work habits and more time was taken to adjust and observe. It took me a year. I’m telling you about what happened in August of 2018. I remember so well that initial desire to just fix this. Our tendency is to look for a pharmaceutical product to give us instant relief. But the kind of process that I took with functional medicine was not a quick fix. It’s a healthy alternative to patching, the pothole. Instead, it helps you build an entirely new road. That takes time. At this point, my excitement about the next 25 years has never been greater. The confidence that I have now about being a productive and fulfilled writer and coach, but also a healthy husband, a daddy, a Papa inspires me every day. I have an extreme amount of gratitude for Dr. Randy James and the rest of the team at True Life Medicine. Should I just decrease the amount of time I sleep to work on my side business? No, I do not suggest that as a way to be more productive, it will make you less productive. I still sleep as much, which is what my body requires. For me, that’s eight hours a night. I recently went through some math with entrepreneurs who are wanting to build a side business to help them find 15 hours a week in their schedule to work on their business. You CAN find your 15 hours. You CAN find your eight hours of sleep every night. We all have 168 hours a week. If you work 40 hours a week and we allowed 10 hours a week for commuting back and forth. You want to spend four hours a week in church and community activities. Then we have to sleep eight hours a night. You can have 10 hours a week for time with your family. That still leaves you 48 hours a week for things that you choose to do, including using 15 of those to build your business. But taking your sleep from eight hours a night to six hours or to four, like I hear some people talk about, I think that’s ludicrous. I think you’ll absolutely compromise your ability to be your best self and to be productive. 7 things I use to maintain optimal health – so then I have a shot at being maximally productive Here are the seven things that I do that help me get myself in a physical condition where I can see the world as I want to see it and be as productive as I want to. 1. Diet 2. Exercise 3. Mindset 4. Supplements 5. Fasting 6. Breathing 7. Cold showers I’m seeing a whole new horizon that I’ve not seen before. I don’t want to be prone and vulnerable to being pulled back into the condition. I want to increase my health to a level that I’ve never experienced before. So I keep learning. I asked Dr. James, “Was it the diet, exercise, mindset or supplements? What was it that helped me get better?” He said it was all of them together. This is a great time of year to be figuring this out and deciding what you want to do. I’m going to be at my best and create the best year I’ve ever had. What about you? What are you doing this year to be at your best? Fear is the cheapest room in the house
Reduce Fear and Move Forward It’s not unreasonable to experience fear in our lives. It can protect us in many ways. But we don’t want it to be our dominant mindset. Reduce fear by keeping it in a very small basement room in your house and in the backseat of your car you’re driving. Let’s look at how to set your mind to control and reduce fear. Your greatest joy is your sorrow unmasked
It is often true that we teach best what we’ve experienced ourselves — particularly sorrow. Dave Ramsey went broke – now he teaches other people how to avoid making the financial mistakes he made. I went through a major business crash – and now I help others figure out how to navigate unexpected career and business changes. A listener shares his story of overcoming problematic drinking and now others are asking him to help them.  Episode #756 December 18, 2020 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real-life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: “Why is it so hard to figure out the “what” in choosing a small business to start?” I have had NUMEROUS interviews that they seemed excited and then all of a sudden, it flops. I’m at an impasse and don’t know where to take my skills. I want to strike it on my own but I have this fear of not getting any business. I am retiring from the government after 31 years and have started a leadership consulting business. It just so happens that I retire “48 days” from today. I am looking for some simple checklist items to follow to cover the bases to get this going in the right direction. Which comes first – generosity or wealth?
Are you waiting to be generous? Many people assume they will be generous as soon as they get wealthy with all their bills paid, retirement funded, and the kids’ college funds in place. But giving first may in fact be the door opener to wealth. Our potential for wealth is not shown in our bank account as much as it is in the attitude of our heart. Episode #755 December 11, 2020 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. We love making microloans to businesses through Kiva.org and will be giving money to our children to do the same as a Christmas gift for them. I’ve enjoyed giving cars to people because finding great cars at good prices is something I love to do. How can you be generous even if you’re not rich? You can be generous with your time and your talents, write a special note, etc. and be generous without spending a lot of money. Who is someone who has been generous to you? I know what your life will be like 3 years from now!
I can predict your future! All I need to do is spend a day with you and listen to what you say and watch what you do. (Should I pursue a career even if I don’t have a passion for it?) You can have multiple passions, and they don’t have to all generate money. There is a 3-legged stool of success: talent, passion and money. Passion is more developed than discovered. Where did you stop dreaming?
Are you giving up your freedom for security? I recently had an experience that rocked my thinking. You too can be a highly trained, poor, enthusiastic underachiever!
One of my pet peeves is seeing people who want to get a new job or start a new business who are buying programs, going to expensive conferences, paying for software and web design, joining expensive masterminds for an extended period of time – and not making money. Always getting ready. “Getting cooked in the squat” as Zig Ziglar told in his story.  Episode #752 November 20, 2020 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: How can we keep our traditional education establishments from choking out our youth’s creativity and innovation? Not everybody is cut out to be an entrepreneur. There’s no shame in that. Understanding yourself is the first step. Ask yourself these 18 questions to determine if you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur. How can we learn to love uncertainty? I set my goals where I have a 50/50 chance of meeting them. To set your goals for the new year, get my free goal-setting workbook here. We all have to decide if we want to be a leader or a manager. There’s nothing wrong with either one. Uncertainty is a mindset. What do you recommend for a guy that likes his job but realizes there is no future in the company? You have to have three legs on a stool to succeed in a business. The three legs of the stool are: passion, talent and money. It sounds like you don’t have passion for your job. You are headed for burn-out. It’s time to draw a line in the sand and start finding or creating work that you love (that has all three legs on the stool) What do you predict in terms of changing work models for this brave new world? Some employers are finding that they can be equally as productive from home, but they are losing their creativity and innovation to move forward. But many have found that they’ve broken some old habits in the traditional work model. Why can’t I listen to my wife and just be content with what is successful? Remember that three-legged stool: passion, talent and money. You need to have the passion to be successful long term. You may experience burn-out, which can manifest in different ways. If you’re passionate about something, figure out how you can do it so you do make money. Often you need to take a unique approach and stand out. But are you sure you’re right?
How To Recognize “Truth” There is a concept called “confirmation bias” which means we tend to find information that supports what we already believe. While we’d like to think our opinions are based on rational analysis, the truth is our opinions are more likely the result of years of paying attention to information that supports our current beliefs. I tell a story that made me question my own ability to recognize “truth”. If you’re working 40 hours per week and spending 10 hours per week commuting. I recommend you sleep 8 hours per night. If you reserve 10 hours a week for time with your family and 4 hours for church and community. You still have 48 hours per week. All you need is 15 of those to build your business. I recommend you do a two-week time log and document your time to be able to see your discretionary time. You then break that 15 hours into 4 specific categories: 3 hours per week reading, studying, gathering new knowledge. 5 hours per week creating content 4 hours per week working with customers 3 hours per week marketing and building your brand Get the 15 hour per week formula here. Is your life really going to make a ‘dent in the universe’?
Can you make a difference in the world? A listener asks if an average person with average abilities can really make a difference. You should be able to identify five people who have made a big difference in your life. Are you on anyone else’s list? You really can make a dent in the universe today? Episode #749 October 30, 2020 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. We unpacked just one question in this episode – because it has such massive implications. Question: Can an average person with average abilities really make a difference?  According to Dr. Phil McGraw, you can trace who you’ve become in this life to three types of external factors: Ten Defining Moments Seven Critical Choices Five Pivotal People Find out more here. In No More Dreaded Mondays, I list the 5 predictors of success (who make a difference): Passion Determination Talent – discover where it is that you rise to the top Self Discipline Faith Find out more about these 5 predictors of success here. My recommendation for president If others looked at your performance for the last four years, would they vote for you to be re-elected? Would you vote for you? How have you progressed toward the goals you announced back in 2016? What about the ones you set for 2020? Yes, we’ve all had challenges this year but if people were looking at how you’ve responded this year, how you’ve realigned for those challenges  – would they vote for you to be their leader for the next four years? Are you excited about having you in charge of your life for the next four years? What promises did you make yourself and those around you for the year we are finishing now? Did you deliver? Have you taken responsibility for the way this year has gone for you – or have you pointed fingers at the economy, the pandemic, the government, the company or your spouse? What are the people who know you best saying about your performance this year? What are your critics saying about your competence and leadership? If you were faced with a debate with someone who strongly disagrees with your actions this year, would you still be confident you had stayed true to your mission, values and purpose? Are you comfortable defending your decisions even if they are not popular with the majority of people around you? Have you been tempted to conform to the crowd mentality even when your heart is telling you otherwise? Are you concerned about the media feed, the brainwashing, the extreme political bias and the resulting crowd mentality that seems to be ignoring common sense, faith and reason right now? Vote for yourself – and be a candidate that others want to follow as well. It will not likely get you a political position but it will establish you as a powerful force for what is virtuous and praiseworthy. Why isn’t your great business idea making you money?
People approach me every day with business ideas — what could be the next greatest Hula Hoop, self-directing Frisbee, time management system, dog training trick, or best-selling book.  Often these people brag about having so many great business ideas that they have not been able to narrow down and develop even one. And therein lies the challenge.  If you have lots of great business ideas and you’ve been doing research for the last five years – I’ll guarantee you nothing has been added to your bank account. Ideas are plentiful and don’t put money in anyone’s pocket.  But the idea that’s combined with a clear plan of action can change your life. Episode #748 October 23, 2020 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: I have wanted to share a business idea with you and your team to get some assistance and advice but I’m afraid once it’s public someone with funding will grab my idea and run with it. Don’t be afraid of sharing an idea. Be of afraid of keeping it close to your chest while someone else comes up with the same idea and runs with it. I encourage you to join the 48 Days Eagles Community and develop a group of people you trust that you can share ideas with. I want my wife to turn her hobby into a business but she’s resisting. What should I do? Look at the reasons she might not be wanting to turn her hobby into a business. Find out how one cake decorator is building her business — but she’s not making cakes. Should I get a business loan? If you have a business that works and a loan would help you leverage what you’re already doing, then go for it. Make your business profitable first. Never start with borrowed money. Should I help my adult son with special needs start his own business? Do you have what it takes to be an entrepreneur? Have you asked for what you want?
Crystal and Mark Victor Hansen show us why asking for help makes you appear smarter and more likable. I share my story about asking Mark for help years ago – and how that opened the door to millions of dollars for me. Why do I keep sabotaging myself?
Maybe you don’t deserve a better life? If you’ve ever thought that, you may be creating our own reality. Self-sabotage is real. But be sure you’re living your own life, not the life you think others expect of you. Embrace what you know about yourself to find that authentic path. Episode #746 October 09, 2020 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: How can a person get past self-sabotage – I seem to be sabotaging everything they try to do? I talk about Upper Limit Challenges in the new version of 48 Days To the Work and Life You Love (developed from Gay Hendricks’ book, The Big Leap). Be aware of what you may have as an Upper Limit Challenge that could result in self-sabotage. But it’s also important to embrace your personality. If you’re introverted, don’t put yourself out there to paint in public. Don’t set yourself up for self-sabotage. Instead have 10 paintings of vintage cars and set them up at a car show or even have someone else do that for you. My friend Ron Baldwin got an agent to put his work out there. So that may be an option as well. Two books I would recommend: The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks to help you understand self-sabotage and your Upper Limit Challenges The War of Art by Steven Pressfield to help you push through the resistance of getting your art out there When the pandemic started and all our business shut down. What should we do now? Continue to move toward selling your products online (Etsy, Facebook, etc.) Just this past week, I had Celebrity Photographer Jeremy Cowart on as a Monday Mentor Training in the 48 Days Eagles Community. Celebrities typically come to him to have their photos made. That came to a stop. Instead of just waiting, he started doing virtual photography where people take a photo of themselves and send it to him and he enhances and makes it into a professional photograph. He did 1200 photoshoots in six weeks and made more money than he would have made in that same period of time. Kent Julian, also in the 48 Days Eagles Community has taken his in-person speaking presentation and is delivering it online as a course, making $100,000 in these four months. Dan: wondering what you would call retirement I do not think you should retire! If you get up every morning and can do what you enjoy doing, why would you change it? How do I go about finding out about the market/need for specific leather items I can make? You are on the right track. Don’t be a generalist. Be a specialist. Listen to the full story of the wood carving on our property, Aristotle. Find your niche that embraces what you really care about. Why don’t I hear more about a franchise opportunity being a good idea from folks like you? I totally love franchises. When you look at the continuum of work models, you have on one side the traditional 9 to 5 job. At the other end, you have a non-traditional, unstructured business. There are a whole lot of things in between there. Franchises are about midway through that continuum. It’s a very structured opportunity. That is not what most entrepreneurs are going to gravitate to. But it’s a great opportunity who wants a clear model for how to be successful. With the franchise model, you are in business for yourself but not by yourself. I know that it would be virtually impossible to replace my current salary of over $200k if I followed my passion. Stop thinking that you can’t make $200,000 following your passion. The three legs of the stool: passion, talent, and money. If you have talent and money but no passion, as you do here, you will burn out. No matter how irrational it may seem, you can make money doing very unique things. A few thoughts: Coach other worship leaders Create a course for worship leaders Develop a membership community for worship leaders Follow your passion. Plus a little commentary on the movie The Social Dilemma Quotation: “Self-doubt does more to sabotage individual potential than all external limitations put together.” Brian TracyClick To Tweet Resource:  Understanding who you are and what opportunities are out there is the first step toward creating the future you’re excited about! Should I change myself or change my job?
I love this question and the answer comes from looking inward first. Knowing yourself well is the key to knowing if your current job has the potential to be meaningful, productive and profitable work. Changing yourself does hold more potential than most people realize. Episode #745 October 02, 2020 Hi, this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show. Questions: Should I change myself or change my job? Hear about a coaching client Dan had that was a very burnt out advertising executive looking to change jobs. Once they began to unpack the situation, he realized if he stripped away the extra things he was saying yes to, he could still have a great job and get his life back. Listen in to a similar story of an anesthesiologist who had added so many committees that it impacted his work performance. By setting new parameters around his work, he was able to do go back to doing a job he loved well. First, take a fresh look at whether or not the work you are doing is a fit for you: Your Values, Dreams and Passions Skills and abilities Personality Tendencies If music is your first love, look at ways you can develop a profitable model around your music. If you can do that, GREAT. If you’re not, that’s okay. You can still do your music as a hobby and then have a day-time job. Find out more: What if my dream isn’t paying the bills? But your full-time job still needs to be something you enjoy. Some of the questions to ask yourself about your current job to determine if it’s a good fit for you: – If you did not have this job today, is it one that you would apply for? – How good are you at what you are doing? – Have you taken time to learn more about your profession and what you’re doing now? – Is there a way to increase your service there? What are 3 actions to fast-tracking my new business? I’m actually going to give you 4 (one bonus): Clarify your Value Proposition Statement – how do you stand out? Clarify your product and services – what are the components of what you offer? Create a financial model. Project your finances based on the products and services and what you’re going to charge. Determine what you’re going to do to let people know what you have to offer. How are you going to market your business? Find out more about the DISC Certification that Erin mentions in her question. What is the best way to own a domain so I don’t have to pay annual fees? The good news is you can protect a name. But you don’t own the domain name outright. I pay for its use every year. You can be very comfortable with that process. We use GoDaddy for that process. I have a daughter who currently attends college but seems uncertain about what subject she is studying and what direction she is going. What advice can you offer? My advice is let her be uncertain. Let her experiment and determine what’s best for her. The reality is that going to college is for the personal growth experience. 10 years after graduation, 80% of graduates are working in something totally unrelated to their college degree. I think my ladder is leaning on the wrong wall. What do I do now? This is not uncommon. We have a lot of folks in the 48 Days Eagles Community who are attorneys, pastors, doctors, dentists, accountants, etc. that decided they didn’t want to practice law but are using the skills they have developed in different ways. Take a breath. Draw a line in the sand and look at yourself. As I say in 48 Days To the Work and Life You Love, 85% of the process of having the confidence of proper direction is looking inward. The confidence comes from knowing what you’re moving to (not what you’re moving from). If you feel off track in what you’re doing? If you do, then make a change. It doesn’t matter if your’e 18 or 68. I want to switch to real estate but don’t know how to sell. How can I learn that? Sales is the greatest transferrable skill there is. Look at developing the skills outlined in How To Win Friends and Influence People Check out the blog post mentioned here: Hourly Pay Will Keep You Poor No matter what your personality style is, you can learn how to sell. There are different selling processes. You can match the kind of selling you do to your personality.  Learn more about the personality styles here. I’m a Mom writing about parenting. How do I get someone to write a review for my book? Options you can add to your book: Preface – written by the author. It explains how you came to write the book and what they can expect. Introduction – also written by the author. Used to introduce the topic of the book and why it’s important. Prologue – is for novels. It prepares the reader for the message in the book. Gives the back story. Foreword – is generally written by someone else who has some authority in the area you’re writing about. Author’s Note – the backstory of your book Endorsement – also from other people who have recognizable names. Often shares why this book is important and why the author is qualified to speak on this topic. Just Broke my Leash – Now What?
Who Has Created the Obstacles In Your Life?   I heard a story recently about a dog, straining at his leash, barking ferociously at a cat about 15 feet away.  All of his actions just screamed, “Turn me loose, and I’m gonna make things happen.”  All of a sudden, in the midst of a powerful lunge, the leash snapped and the dog was free to go attack the cat.  But he looked astonished, frightened, actually terrified.  He quickly grabbed the leash, ran back to the torn section and whipped it together in a triple knot.  Then he could again safely scream, “If only you turned me loose you’d see what I am capable of.” A whole lot of you have discovered a “broken leash” this year — obstacles being removed from you life. What are you doing with that freedom? 48 days into my new job I was fired – what now?
Well, this is a new one. I don’t recall ever getting a note talking about losing a job in 48 Days. From the tone of the note, I doubt it was work she loved. But if that happens to you, instead of feeling helpless, consider that now you have a fresh experience of having gotten that job and the added insights about why it didn’t work out. See this as a new opportunity to find – or create – work that blends your talent, passion, and money. It might be too late for you to be successful
No it’s really not. In this episode I contrast the theories outlined in Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell and Range by David Epstein. It seems that people who are extraordinarily successful often experiment with a whole lot of things before they find their best fit. The old theory that you have to start when you’re three years old and put in your 10,000 hours may not be true. So it’s not too late if you’re in your 30s, 40s or 50s to find what you’re that sweet spot where your talent, passion and money come together. Episode #741 September 04, 2020 Hi this is Dan Miller – and yes you’re listening to the 48 Days Radio show – where each week we take 48 minutes to dive into real life questions about finding your passion, deciding what kind of life you want to live – and then finding or creating work that allows you to show up every day, excited to be able to do something that is meaningful, fulfilling – and profitable.  This is where normal, indecision and ambiguity come to die.  Welcome to the 48 Days Radio Show.
