A Conversation About How to Be Better Allies to our LGBTQ+ Peers in the Semiconductor Industry and Beyond
In the aftermath of Gay Pride Month, we bring you a very special episode of the 3D InCites Podcast. Even though it's July, we believe it is important to be allies to the LGBTQ community all year round. While many companies showed support for the LGBTQ+ community by adapting their logos with rainbow colors and sharing supportive messaging and banners on social media, SEMI Foundation went a step further and commissioned a blog post written by Maria Vetrano titled, "LGBTQIA+ Visibility and Acceptance in the Chip Industry.". The blog post was enlightening, to say the least, and it inspired us to learn more about how those of us in the semiconductor industry can be better allies and accomplices to our LGBTQ+ colleagues. To do that, we invited Maria and SEMI Foundation's Michelle Williams-Vaden to join us in a conversation. If you have more questions, we invite you to reach out to Michelle at SEMI Foundation: firstname.lastname@example.org, and/or Maria Vetrano on Linked In. Member Spotlight: A Conversation about Novel Nano-Coating Technology and Collaboration
In this first Member Spotlight episode, we have a conversation with Zia Karim, Yield Engineering Systems, and Mie Lillethorup, RadiSurf about their collaboration to bring unique nanotech-based surface enhancement materials from the lab to the fab. What's exciting about these materials and processes is the potential they hold for simplifying both temporary and permanent wafer bonding in 2.5D and 3D advanced packaging applications. The two companies fall under the umbrella of KCK Group. Yield Engineering Systems specializes s in high-volume solutions for material modification and surface enhancement, Radisurf is a Danish start-up that has developed nano-coating of polymer brushes, which are densely-placed tiny plastic chains that act as an adhesion promoter, and is suited for multiple applications in semiconductor advanced packaging, as well as MEMS, sensors, microLEDs. A Conversation with Bharat Kapoor about Creating a Resilient Semiconductor Supply Chain
In this episode, Françoise interviews Bharat Kapoor, lead partner, Americas, at Kearney. a global strategy and management consulting firm, where he founded and leads PERLab, the firm’s design innovation service. Bharat has solid roots in semiconductor engineering and design. His interest in electrical engineering began in his hometown in the Himalayas when he was in the third grade. He learned you could make a transformer by wrapping wire around a piece of iron. He tried it at home and almost burned his house down. A passion was born. As a junior engineer at Motorola, he seized an opportunity to work on the special projects team that developed the first smartphone. You can read his story here. It’s pretty great. In the wake of COVID 19 and its impact on the semiconductor supply chain, Kapoor’s team researched, wrote, and published a white paper, Why a Resilient Semiconductor Supply Chain is Imperative and How to Create One. In addition to giving an overview of the paper and tips you can put to work at your company, Bharat answers some tough questions like: · With all the fab expansion, will we be at risk of an oversupply? · Is the US infusion of $52B too little, too late? · Will Intel’s IDM 2.0 Strategy for Manufacturing be successful? · And more…Related Links · Why A Resilient Semiconductor Supply Chain is Imperative and How to Create One· Kearney Global Strategy and Management Consulting Firm· Contact Bharat Kapoor

A Conversation about Global Fab Expansion and Its Impact on Equipment Suppliers and the Workforce
The chip shortage in the wake of COVID 19 is such a big story that it’s attracting mainstream media attention, and it feels like the general public now knows what semiconductors are. The upshot is that the shortage combined with the demand for chips is putting a strain on the entire semiconductor supply chain. With an expected 38 new fabs coming online between 2020 and 2024, demand is high for 300mm and 200mm tools, as well as the workforce to make them run. Not only that, but lead times to get those fabs operating will not solve the current situation. Urban Mining, EV Battery Recycling, and Other Semiconductor Sustainability Issues: A Conversation with Dean Freeman and Julia Goldstein
Today we are talking about the importance of sustainability in semiconductor manufacturing, which you may have noticed is a really hot topic right now. And it's also one we feel really strongly about because of its impact on the future of society. Our guests today are Dean Freeman, who has been blogging about it for the past few months and Julia Goldstein, who just joined us as a regular blogger. We're also joined by Martijn Pierik, CEO of our sponsor, Kiterocket. In the beginning, we focus on the impact that our electronic devices have on the e-waste issue and what can be done about it. And then we talk about the bigger picture of sustainably manufacturing these devices.Dean has more than 36 years of experience in semiconductor manufacturing materials. Over the course of his career, he's also been responsible for every aspect of the semiconductor manufacturing process. You may know him best for his years as a market analyst at Gartner. And he is currently a consultant and blogging for 3D InCites. Julia has her Ph.D. in material science and began her career as an engineer in the advanced packaging space. She switched gears to become a technical writer for the industry in the early 2000s. She switched gears to become a technical writer for the industry in the early 2000s. Her passion for materials led to her concern about the negative impact some of them have on the earth. She is the author of the book, Material Value, More Sustainable, Less Wasteful Manufacturing of Everything from Cell phones to Cleaning Products. She also recently joined the blogging team.
