In celebration of Black August, I talked to Nino Brown of the Party for Socialism & Liberation about his time organizing to save the Assata Shakur & Guillermo Morales Community Center in New York. In 1989, the center was dedicated after student-led protests at CUNY followed proposed tuition hikes. It served as a space for student organizers, LGBT and women's rights activism, and political organizing. Longtime townhomes resident and housing justice advocate Rasheda Alexander joins in to talk about the struggle at "The People's Townhomes," a majority Black housing complex in University City in West Philly. The site's affordable housing contract with the federal government (HUD) is set to expire Sept. 7, forcing nearly 70 low-income residents out of the housing complex that's stood for them for nearly 40 years. In July of 2020, an unidentifiable body was found in a container on a vacant plot of land in South Philadelphia. Seeking to counteract the disturbing and traumatic discovery, community leader Boogie Rose stood together with the support of the surrounding neighborhood to enact the Community Healing Garden (CHG) on that very same plot of land.
