The Man Rules do not prepare men to navigate the rocky emotional terrain of their day-to-day lives. So, what happens when childhood sexual abuse and emotional abuse make that terrain much, much rockier than average? In most cases, it leads to men suffering in silence from profound depression, crippling anxiety, rage, addiction, and behaviors that are destructive to themselves and others. Larry Ruhl, our guest this week, was on such a path until his caring partner encouraged him to get help. His father began sexually abusing him at age 4, and he was constantly subjected to his narcissistic mother’s verbal abuse, manipulation, and violent rages. Teased and berated for not being man enough; seduced and abused for his sensitivity and vulnerability. He shares his story with Dan and proves that no matter how men have suffered, or how limited they’ve been by The Man Rules, there is hope and there is a better way forward. Larry’s story is the first to be featured in our new series of Deep Dive episodes, where we ask one man to share about his struggles in learning to live authentically in spite of The Man Rules. If you can identify with any of this story please find someone with whom you can talk and consider getting help and support. You deserve peace and you don’t have to suffer alone.

Totally Amazing
"The cost of disconnection is disconnection!" (Terry Real), what a powerful statement speaking about how men are being socialized and the impact that it is having not only on our communities but relationships and also future generations! This episode did an amazing job being able to say so many things that I feel have needed to be said, not only how men are seen in our culture but sadly how men are seeing themselves. Looking forward to what the next episode brings!

Don't let the rules rule you...
We are living in the midst of a backlash to thousands of years of patriarchy. Male privilege is being rightfully challenged (about time) but as a result, countless men are feeling confused, enraged, displaced and lost. Many have retreated deeper into the toxic embrace of the modern conception of masculinity – "the self-made man" – a masculinity measured by status, wealth and domination over others. This notion of maleness perpetuates a dog eat dog world where it is every man for himself. The implications of all this are profoundly destructive - not just to men but to children, women and all of society.
Dan Griffin brings this all to light in insightful and entertaining fashion. He exposes the ever present influence of the "man rules" which men have internalized since birth. We adhere to these commandments because we believe they keep us safe - when in actuality they cause much of our own suffering.
Dan promotes the concept of "conscious masculinity" as the answer and the antidote to the present male crisis. He also provides a platform for others, including pioneers such as Dr. Allen Berger and John Lee to share their wisdom. This is an excellent and necessary show that I recommend to men and anyone who cares about them.
