Episode Info:

Season 2, Episode 22. Many people move abroad for love, but what happens when that relationship doesn't work out? Jessica had studied Spanish and moved to Guatemala, so Germany wasn't anywhere on her radar when she started dating her German girlfriend. But eventually, she moved to her girlfriend's hometown of Erfurt, Germany. Erfurt had been a part of the DDR, so Russian was more common as a second language than English.

Jessica immersed herself in the German language and culture. Two years into life in Erfurt, the relationship ended, but Jessica stayed. Even when she later moved away to England, her heart stayed in Germany.

In today's episode, we discuss at what point living abroad, learning a new language and a new culture, stops being something you're doing for someone else and starts being something you're doing for yourself. For Jessica, although the relationship that brought her to Germany ended, her love affair with Germany continues to this day.
