Mt Everest is the world’s tallest mountain. Located in the Himalayan mountain range, it sits at a height of 8848 meters. It is well known for its hazardous nature, taking the lives of many climbers with 1 in 10 successful climbs to the summit ending in death. The high altitude causes most climbers to be seriously ill, where they experience a number of symptoms including dizziness, fatigue, headaches, nausea, vomiting & severe shortness of breath. These may seem minor to the common person, but when above 20,000 feet with limited resources, it commonly claims the lives of climbers.
On the 5th May 2017 John John Burke was the first Clare man to summit Mount Everest. In this week’s episode, I speak to him and a 10 year journey that brought him to the top of the world. Severely overweight and feeling totally unfulfilled, John documents where it all began for him and how he transformed his life. He speaks about the importance of mental health and techniques he used to overcome the Himalayan beast. The fear of death and how he was able to keep any impending thoughts at bay.
