Episode Info:

This week, you’ll hear about the latest school shooting, Iowa’s controversial abortion ban, and how affording the basics is just outside the grasps of nearly half of US families. In the 360 topic, “Ebony, Ivory or Royalty?” (33:58), Keesa & Djevna talk about the Royal Wedding and the many firsts that Meghan Markle carries as she is officially welcomed into the royal family. Her status as an American-born actress and divorcee is outside the norms of a royal bride-to-be. Her relationship with Harry and rise to royalty has been the center of much controversy, both across the pond and in the States. Her racial identity has been the focal point of much of the conversation, especially since she self-identifies as “biracial”. In a recent post, Teen Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Elaine Welteroth, discusses the idea of Meghan’s royal family first being a first for biracial people. In a world where race is usually presented as an either-or scenario, it is interesting the media has allowed her to represent both sides of her identity. We discuss why Meghan has been the first “first” to be afforded this opportunity. Does it have to do with her “passing” phenotype being allowed to claim whiteness? Is it the desire of the media and monarchy to distance themselves from Blackness? Is the term “biracial” being weaponized due to anti-Blackness? Is it only skin deep and not that deep at all? Check out the episode to hear our thoughts and if you love it, LIKE and share!
