It all kicked off at the end of March, when Cannes announced that Netflix movies would be banned from competing at the festival because of the streamer's refusal to embrace old-fashioned theatrical rollouts. Last week, Netflix announced that it was pulling out of Cannes completely - not just the competitions - to protest the decision. No films with Netflix distribution will play in any section at Cannes this year. This conflict is really about two very different cinema cultures - the French perspective, which sees cinema as a communal experience devoted to an art that is meant to be projected onto a big screen - and the American one, which values choice and individual taste and looks at a movie as something that’s the same no matter the size of the screen and the viewing conditions under which you see it.
