When’s the last time you gave or received a hug? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Don’t shy away from physical affection. Some people believe that our society is grumpy because over the years we have adopted a hands off approach. Could there be something to all those pats on the back? Well researchers say yes. Physical affection actually reduces stress hormones and releases oxytocin, a hormone that makes you feel happy. People need to touch and be touched. Studies show that marriages where couples show physical affection, like handle holding and snuggling have a higher success rate not to mention the people tend to live longer. Next time you see a friend or a relative, reach out and give ‘em a big hug. While you’re at it – tell them you love ‘em too.
