"We are not defined by what knocks us down - we are defined by how we get back up."  ~Madeleine Black   Madeleine black is a psychotherapist, an author, a public speaker, wife, and mother.  In her memoir, Unbroken, she shares an honest, raw, and revealing account of being gang raped as a teenager and the repercussions that come with it.   Her story is one of hope for anyone who has been violated, sexually assaulted, abused or raped.   Sharing her story was a key component in healing, and so was forgiveness.  Madeleine talks about the importance of getting the story out and sharing it with someone.  She also discusses forgiveness and how powerful it is for victims to forgive themselves.   We talk a lot about the shame a victim carries with them after such and horrific event.  The shame binds us until we can step into that shame.  Madeleine explains what it means to step into shame, and how that allows us to release it and let it go.   We discuss the sense of peace and healing that comes from sharing our stories.  When we are in a state of denial about what happened, over time, it creates more uneasiness within ourselves than the traumatic event itself does.  Denial leads to silence, and silence harms the self while protecting the perpetrator.   Compassion and forgiveness are important for healing.   We discuss some of the failures of the legal system in dealing with cases of rape and sexual assault.   She talks about working the trauma out of our system - this doesn't happen overnight.  It takes time.   Madeleine's story is one of resilience, forgiveness, and hope.   Connect with Madeleine online: Twitter:  www.twitter.com/madblack65 Facebook: www.facebook.com/MadeleineBlackUnbroken Website:  www.madeleineblack.co.uk       Buy her book!
