Practicing Mindfulness for Conscious Goal Setting - 018
Think back to when you were 18 years old. What was your favorite band? Your favorite food? What clothes did you love to wear? And how many of those things are the same as they are now? If you are anything like me, very few! So why do we expect 18 year old adult babies (because face it, that's what we were at that age) to be self-aware enough to pick a path that will suit them for the rest of their lives? Dreams change. Your dreams can change often, or you might fuel the same passion for as long as you live. But just because you sense your passions, interests, and skill-sets shifting, it doesn't mean that you are giving up. In today's episode, Melissa Monte (host of the Mind Love podcast), shares stories of the tumultuous events that led her to change dreams several times in her life so far, and how she's used mindfulness to get clear on her true passion - unattached to timeline or outcome. We talk addiction, life, death, habit-loops, lucid dreaming and baby animal trainers...so buckle up and be prepared to redefine your definition of success! IN THIS EPISODE, MELISSA AND I REVIEW… ♦ Melissa talks all about her first goal of being a Baby Animal Trainer....to being a party animal...(bad pun, I know, I couldn't help myself...) ♦ How Melissa confronted her addiction to Adderall, and identified the habit-loops that were keeping her confined in her life ♦ The steps that Melissa took to internalize the self-help content she loved and put it into action to shift her life ♦ How Melissa infused this same principle to her relationships - even if that meant that same former friendships might fade... ♦ Melissa realizes the reason why she decided to stop pursuing her dreams of writing in college, with the writing assignment that was near and dear to her heart... ♦ The social reinforcement that Melissa (and Brittany) experienced for their talents growing up, which caused them to never question their true goals and dreams ♦ How Melissa did discover her true passion and talents after school, and how her community helped her hone in on her best contributions... ♦ How Melissa defines success...even as her definition has shifted over time... ♦ The limiting belief that Melissa had about her father, and how she overcame it in order to have successful romantic relationships in the future ♦ How to know if you should stick with a goal (even when the going gets tough) or if you should focus on a different passion that might be a better fit for you right now... ♦ How you can use mindfulness for goal setting ♦ How to structure your schedule to maximize the impact you make on your goals ♦ How to be mindful and results driven...at the same time... ♦ Melissa's thoughts on the "badge of honor" mentality that some people experience when working late hours...and how this perception hurts our ability to be effective and manage our will-power ♦ How to overcome addictive habit-loops and train ourselves to choose different behaviors ♦ Brittany and Melissa geek out about lucid dreaming...and share some of their best lucid dream stories... Melissa’s ability to connect with her audience is largely due to what some call an extreme amount of life experience. She was a victim of sexual assault, twice. She suffered the loss of a close friend by suicide. She lost a parent from lymphoma. For ten years, she was consumed by a dangerous eating disorder, that led to chronic intestinal damage, both of which she overcame against the odds. And she was emotionally trapped in a manipulative relationship with a sociopath that ultimately landed her in jail for someone else’s crime. Melissa is a certified yoga teacher and reiki healer. She’s also certified in Accelerated Free Fall Skydiving and she’s a student of Transcendental Meditation, as taught by the David Lynch Foundation. Melissa Monte started her career in digital media and was the Vice President of a startup when she fully realized her passion of helping people become their best selves. Her countless hours of research and self-experimentation contribute to her vast knowledge of improving the human condition. She lives in Santa Monica with her husband; they have a dog named Maverick Danger that fills their hearts. She spends her free time doing yoga, slacklining, and drinking matcha lattes by the beach.
