She's In Russia
About This Show
Since late 2013, the US and Russia have been engaged in a state of tension and information warfare, sometimes referred to as Cold War II. The recent US-based intrigue and investigation into the relationship between Putin, Trump and hacking has increased tensions to a fever pitch, most notably in the politics and media of the American Left.
Cold War II represents and encourages some of humanity’s very worst tendencies - towards xenophobia, ignorance, falsity. On this podcast two best friends -- one in St. Petersburg and the other in Brooklyn -- call each other and talk about US-Russian politics and/or culture in an attempt to push back against the caricature and sensationalism that dominate the current discussion in mainstream Politics and Media.

44: Moscow's Trash Collapse
In the suburbs of Moscow people have been fighting with local government to solve what has now clearly become a region-wide garbage management crisis. To make matters worse, it's in the largest urban area of a country that, at least on the official level, doesn't recycle.
This week Lily tells Smith what she learned about Moscow Oblast's trash problem from talking with people at a protest in Lobnya, one of the several Moscow suburbs that held trash-related protests on April 14, in honor of the regional governor's birthday.

Love this podcast!
I really like this podcast. I think it's super cool that these best friends record thousands of kilometers apart and still are informative and entertaining. I've always had a fascination with Russian culture, history, and the language. Instead of doing what I tried to do in the past (read history books about Russia that bored me to tears), Smith and Olivia talk about it in digestible chunks that also make me laugh. And some of my favourites - where they go and interview people who are have lived Russian history and hear their stories. Good work, y'all!
