Episode Info: Listen in iTunes | Stitcher Radio Because we have the truth and can see the illusions of the world "The Christian is the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars.” - Francis Schaeffer A good question I think is, How do you judge music or any art for that matter? I think I have found a good answer to that and we’ll get into that today for you! Listen now to learn about: The 2nd chapter of "Art and the Bible” by Francis Schaeffer on standards of judging art Why this topic? Because first, we must judge our own music well to be effective and just plain good Second, We must know how and why we judge other people's art and that art is not completely subjective. All things we as humans do come under the authority of the bible. As Schaeffer puts it, "the whole man"- meaning his body, mind, and soul is saved and being purified (or sanctified). And this definitely includes our art (music). In fact the bible calls us (our lives) his workmanship (poema) in Ephesians 2:10. Paul says: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” 4 main criteria to judge art:   Standards of Judgment: all four must be taken together. 1. Technical excellence: Timing, pitch, composition, lyrics 2. Validity: The reasons which the artist had for creating. Is it a work honest to the artists' interests, purposes, and World View or is it done only to be a commercial success. Does the work express what the artist believes or is it pandering to the audience for personal gain (sell-out). 3. Intellectual Content (or World View); Christian art is art that is true. It corresponds with Reality as the Bible says it is. Yet, actual Bible and Christian words do not need to be used. 4. Suitability of Form to Content (does the vehicle convey the message?): The only concern is whether the language or style used expresses accurately the message intended.
