Episode Info: SOCIAL MEDIA When I began podcasting, I thought about some ways to get the word out there about my show. I knew that word of mouth would be huge, but I also knew that technology had evolved to give us social media. I made the decision at that point that I was going to use Twitter as my platform of choice to put the word out. What I didn’t realize at the time, was how important that decision was going to be later down the road. There are so many different types of social media and we all are good at one of two of them. I know that I am not well versed in Facebook which tends to push me towards Twitter, but there are some podcasters out there that have social media on lock. They seem to know every type of social media out there and are completely efficient at using them all as a strong platform of communication. When I made the decision to use Twitter, it was based on the fact that I knew how to use it. I had other Twitter accounts and have been a user for a long time so it was natural for me to want to make it my mainstay. The first thing I did was created a new account for the show and started following other podcasters. I then started to promote my podcast, to no followers. That is right, I had no followers, but I was promoting the hell out of my show. This did not improve my followers at all and to be honest, I almost started thinking it might have been a bad idea, but then I started thinking about the purpose of using social media, and why we as podcasters need it. Some podcasters will tell you that social media is merely a tool to promote and advertise their podcasts, and if you scroll through your time line, you can almost pick those podcasters out. I am not saying that I am not one of those podcasters, because I have used my social media accounts to promote my shows across the board. I use it to the extreme where I re-tweet from each show on the other show’s account to ensure maximum coverage. I am sure that some of you do the same thing, and to be honest, why wouldn’t you? I feel that it is a smart way to maybe gain new listeners and to get the show out to everyone that may be looking for the type of podcast you are doing.
