Back from Break!
Nov 22, 2015
This post will not teach you how to do something, or give you the reasons why you do certain things in podcasting. This post is an explanation of where I have been. Today is all about taking a break, why you take a break, and what should and should not be done while on break.
You know when I started coming back to write and do a show for The Crossroads of Podcasting, I realized that I had nothing to write. I had taken a whole month to revamp the Let's Talk Herd! podcast and to ensure it was on track to become a great podcast for our local community and University. I then decided to come back to The Crossroads of Podcasting and found out I couldn't think of anything to write. I would write stuff that was just crap, or write something that looked good and when I read it aloud it sounded awful. I was stuck, and had nowhere to go but down.
So I realized that my few faithful listeners would start asking questions (which they already had), and I decided that I needed to post something to social media to let them know what was going on. I was receiving messages giving me ideas for shows (I will have them out soon), and some messages were from other podcasters that don't even know me telling me to just do it.
I finally came to the realization that I needed to do something and so I took the advice of a fellow podcaster, and just got on the mic and started talking. You will hear in this episode that I say "I didn't write a script for this one, so I am winging it." I felt that this was probably the best way of doing an episode coming back from an unexpected break.
So why do we take a break away from podcasting? Well there are a few answers to this question. Sometimes we take a break because of life. We have to remember that real life takes precedence over podcasting. Our lives are a complex journey of happenings and events that cause us to divert our attention from our hobbies or jobs. When something in our lives causes us to address it with most of our focus, we will let certain aspects of our lives to slide and maybe be on hiatus for a bit.
Another reason we take a break is because we get burn out. Some of you wonder at this stage of your podcasting how anyone could get burned out, but I am here to tell you it is very possible. I have been hosting or helping host 3 shows for about 6 months now, and I have burn out a couple of times already. ThRead more »
