Episode Info:

This episode of the GTK podcast is the first to cover a non-player. The subject is Senior editor Matt Doyle, better known as the Armchair Analyst (@MLSAnalyst). Matt has been writing for Major League Soccer since 2010 and has stood out to me as one of the first American soccer columnists to not constantly compare MLS and its players to an artificial European standard.
A native of Connecticut, Matt has had a love affair with American soccer since 1990 when the USMNT qualified for the World Cup. He spent much of his high school and college career finding ways to write about the American version of soccer. He covered travel teams, high school teams, and college teams before MLS even had its inaugural game. After MLS came onto the scene, he worked as a playwright, along with other various temp jobs, but still made the time to write about MLS to anyone who would print it.
Along with learning about Matt’s professional history, we also get to hear his thoughts on the future of the league and where he believes the strengths and weaknesses are for teams to be successful.
Just like you learned about Quincy Amarikwa, Sean Johnson, and Marvell Wynne’s path to MLS in the other podcast episodes, I believe Matt’s story will give people a roadmap on how to write professionally for the one thing they are most passionate about. While most us do not have the capability to play sports professionally, we all have the ability and platform to write about what we are most passionate. After listening to his story, maybe one of us can be the next Matt Doyle.
