Dr. Ken Whitten

Ken Whitten has served as the senior pastor of Idlewild Baptist Church in Lutz, Fla., since October 1989. He led the church in establishing a South Tampa campus in Nov. 1995, and in April 1998, a Central Tampa campus in the inner-city with an African-American pastor. Recently, Idlewild added a Hispanic ministry at its main campus and a satellite campus in Odessa, Fla.
Previously, Whitten served on the ministerial staff at Bellevue Baptist in Memphis, providing pastoral care and leadership for the Eastern Campus from 1982-1989. He served as associate pastor of N. Jacksonville Baptist in Florida, from 1979-1982; and from 1977-1979 he was associate pastor of the First Baptist Church in Casey, Ill.
In denominational service, he served on the 2010 SBC Great Commission Resurgence Task Force and currently serves on the National Board of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He served for two terms as trustee to the IMB. In 1995, he served as president of the Florida Baptist State Convention, and in 2002 as President SBC Pastors’ Conference. He has been privileged to preach at the Southern Baptist Convention and the SBC Pastors’ Conference, in various associational annual meetings, evangelism conferences, men’s conferences, and church revivals throughout the U.S. He has also been privileged to travel to W. Africa, China, Brazil, the Dom. Republic, Romania, Paraguay and the Holy Land.
Whitten is married to Ginny, and together they have four children and six grandchildren.
