Hello, Welcome to Locating the Macabre for those curious about the tragic events of the past and where they occurred. I will be documenting murders, suicides and accidental deaths of my home town Newcastle and then expanding out to other locations Australia wide. This is not just about the dry facts but the people involved. Who were they? What led up to the events and how did it impact those left behind? I am Rachel and this is locating the Macabre. Today we are visiting Broughton School, Newcastle on November 28th 1938. Broughton School was a boys boarding school with boys aged up to 15 years old. The staff, the headmaster and his wife, the masters and some boys slept on the premises. On that morning the newspaper boy was delivering papers to the Newcastle hill area. While delivering the newspaper to the school Francis Walker saw some woman’s belongings on the ground. There was a handbag, gloves, a handkerchief and a bangle. He told the gardener, a Leonard William Roberts, about his find. He told the inquest the gardener went to view the items and that he later saw him near the area where the body was found. In the quarters where the housemaid slept it was noticed that one of the housemaids, Dorothy Everett, had not returned from the pictures the night before. Several members of the staff noticed what looked like a log with grey cloth over the top of it lying near the gates. Leonard Roberts was called to approach the body and it confirmed it was Dorothy. Leonard asked for a sheet to give her modesty in death. When the doctor came to inspect the body he removed the sheet that had been placed there to protect her modesty. The body had been stripped naked, her corset pulled up over her face. She had been strangled to death by two pairs of stockings. The knots showed some skill, pointing towards someone with familiarity with tying knots like a sailor. There was damage to her lips and tongue as if she was violently stopped from screaming and she had been bitten on multiple parts of her body. Bruising showed a brutal assault before she had been murdered. Some smoked cigarettes were found discarded near the body. Her clothing was later found hastily discarded in the yard next door to door to the school, where the bishop of Newcastle resided. Dorothy May Everett had been born in Taree to James and Bella. She lived a secure childhood, going to Sunday school and involving herself in the community. When she was old enough she went into work in domestic ser
