Episode Info:

The California law AB5 is a massive overhaul of labor regulations, and it's going national. Ostensibly to help gig workers like Uber and Lyft drivers, it instead reclassifies every freelancer and independent contractor to be employees, whether they want it or not. Instead of hiring these professionals - some who may work one hour a year - confusion and fear over the bill is causing companies to avoid using anyone in California. As a result, people are losing their livelihoods. I talk with Shaun Spalding from New Media Rights, to give an overview of AB5 and how it could be fixed to actually help people rather than hurt them.
