On this episode of the Voices of Reason Podcast, Amy Donaldson and Jasen Lee have a spirited discussion about the perceptions of race in America in the wake of deadly violence in Virginia, as well as the use of racial descriptors in the naming of features meant to honor someone. On Aug. 12, violence erupted in Charlottesville, VA as hundreds of white nationalists, neo-Nazis and Ku Klux Klan members — conducting what they called a “take America back” rally — clashed with counter-protesters in the streets. One person was killed when a car plowed into crowds, leaving 19 others injured. Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Utah Committee on Geographic Names voted against changing the name of Negro Bill Canyon Trail near Moab, UT. Critics argue the name is racist and offensive, while supporters claim the name preserves the history of a canyon named for black rancher and prospector William Grandstaff.
