The Psychology of Supporting Political Candidates like Judge Roy Moore
< 1 day ago
On this episode of the Voices of Reason podcast, Amy Donaldson and Jasen Lee discuss how people stand behind candidates who display or have displayed highly questionable moral character. The debate stems from the controversial candidacy of Judge Roy Moore, a candidate for the U.S. Senate from Alabama. He has been accused by numerous women of inappropriate sexual conduct with underage girls when he was in his 30's. Despite the allegations, Moore has steadfastly denied some of the accusations and refused to bow out of the race even though many high-ranking Republicans have asked him to step down. Conservatives point to Democrats like President Bill Clinton and the allegations against him while in office as a precedent for supporting similar alleged behavior. What makes people choose to support such seemingly flawed candidates for high political office? We dig into the cognitive dissonance or mental discomfort experienced by voters who simultaneously purport to believe in societal morality yet can support a person whose behavior is plainly contradictory to those long-held beliefs and values.
