BYU entered Saturday with hopes of turning their season around with a win against East Carolina. The Cougars started fast in the first quarter, with a Tanner Mangum hitting Micah Simon with a 12 yard touchdown pass. ECU would respond however, with a 1 yard Thomas Sirk scoring run. Down 16-10 in the third quarter, the Cougars tried to inch their way back, but had failed opportunities, including a 41 yard field goal by Rhett Almond that missed. In the fourth quarter, the Pirates added two touchdowns to Trevor Brown and Quay Johnson from Gardner Minshew. Mangum found Matt Bushman with three minutes left but it hardly put a dent in the Pirates margin. Kelani Sitake and his team ended up falling to East Carolina 33-17, losing their seventh straight game, and falling out of bowl contention for the first time since 2004.
