Vietnam Vets with Guns in Your School
A group of Vietnam Veterans in Southern Utah has volunteered to be in the schools, carrying guns, protecting the children. They're willing to get whatever training is needed. The school district is touched by the offer, but isn't sure about the thought of the veterans with guns in the school. The district does have an immediate need for crossing guards, but the veterans have no interest in that. Francine Gianni is the Executive Director of the Utah Department of Commerce. "I commend them. They came home not to the homecoming they deserved. I'm grateful for their service, but I think it's a community decision. It's not just the school district's decision. It should be up to the parents, too. I would hope they would be open to volunteering in some other way if the armed volunteering doesn't work out." Amanda Dickson wishes they would volunteer to read with the kids. There is such a need for reading volunteers. So many of the kids are behind in their reading skills. They don't get the reading at home that they need. Can you imagine if these cool men, Vietnam veterans, came to read with them? How cool would that be? Shantel McBride is a hospice chaplain. "The responsibility of packing, especially in a school. I've worked with a lot of veterans. My first thing would be that PTSD kicking in. I would be a little bit leary about that. I would also be a little concerned that we're turning our schools into a militia."
