The Fast Lane to Making Fiction a Reality with Elizabeth Doyle Carey and Carrie Doyle
Jun 14 17
Our broad for today’s show is actually two broads—sisters, authors, publishers, and longtime friends of mine: Elizabeth Doyle Carey and Carrie Doyle. Between them, they have five sons, and their families make their homes in the Hamptons. Two years ago, they pooled their resources and talents and joined with their partner, Tiffany Palmer, to launch Dunemere Books, an independent book publisher of destination fiction for all ages. How is Dunemere Books different? As authors, Liz and Carrie were frustrated with the popular slow model of book publishing and the fact that writers give up so much control over their work to a publisher. They wanted their company to stand out and be set apart---and they’ve taken great strides to accomplish those purposes. What you’ll hear in this episode: The beginning: how their idea became reality Why they wanted Dunemere to be a different kind of publisher with a faster timeline and more control for authors Why they want readers to “binge read” Starting out with e-books and transitioning to physical books Their “soft” business plan to focus on e-books and their website Why they use freelance writers Liz’s journey: from Golden Books to Simon & Schuster—22 books and several series How Liz and Carrie work together to come up with plots Carrie and Liz’s current series: The Hamptons Murder Mysteries and The Junior Lifeguards Series What is “destination fiction”?
