What does stream health say about the quality of our local ecosystem? What does it have to do with us? Join Niki in conversation about her experiences working with the Missouri Department of Conservation as part of a stream assessment field team. She will discuss the importance of freshwater ecology, what it takes to conserve Missouri’s wild waterways, and how we can become better environmental stewards. Niki Aktipis is a dedicated conservationist and environmental educator. She has spent several field seasons involved in various conservation projects – ranging from the protection of endangered marine turtles in Costa Rica to the monitoring of desert tortoise in the Mohave Desert. Previous to her role within MDC, she served for over a year in a civil conservation corps where she assisted in the restoration of wilderness hiking trails, including the Hermit trail in the Grand Canyon. A native midwesterner, Niki graduated from the University of Derby in 2016 with a master’s degree in Conservation Biology and previously from the University of Michigan with a bachelor’s in Biopsychology. She is the author of “Turtles of the Caribbean: As Told by Niki Aktipis”. She currently resides in the Kansas City area.
