ACL – EP1: Where we’ve been and where we’re going!
I think we’re live so hello everyone and thank you for watching. You’re probably either watching this after work, maybe on a lunch break or something like that. Either way welcome and thanks for watching today.
I’m going to give you a little bit of background about Geek Adventures and then let you in on what’s in store for Adventure Chat Live! So let’s get into it.
So a while back — Actually, three years, five months, 27 days. But who’s counting? — I moved from Iowa to Austin, Texas. I lived in Iowa for about 30 years and was working for a tech company. I could move anywhere I wanted and I decided to go there because I had been dreaming of getting on the trails. I had been dreaming of hiking through the city. If you’ve ever been to a place that has a lot of snow or cold weather, it’s very difficult to get on the trails.
In fact, it’s not really a part of the culture there. And so, I hightailed it down to Austin and for awhile I would just kind of hang out exploring trails on my own. And while I was exploring trails, I realized that I really wanted to be on the trails with somebody else, right? I just wanting to hang out with other people and it’s not really my nature to join a generic meetup group. I really wanted to be with other like-minded people in the tech or science fields — really geeky people that I could relate to and learn from and talk to. And so I created this meetup (Hiking with Geeks) in Austin, and over the weekend, after I started the meetup, there were hundreds of people that signed up. And so I realized that people were really, really hungry for an opportunity to get together on the trail, which was awesome.
But as I was doing that, I also realized from talking to people on the trail that it was really about a lot more than that. It was about digital detox. It was about, getting away from technology and away from the screen and getting real with people human to human. I don’t know about you, but I’ve been tethered to my phone way too much for comfort lately. And so this community is all about having an excuse to leave your phone at home and do something human to human. At this point — and this is a little over a year later — there are about 17,000 members in the hiking community. And we’re leading four trips this year. One to Iceland, the boundary waters, some in Texas and stuff lik
