Episode Info: About Matt Matt Hoskinson is the 19th pastor of The First Baptist Church in the City of New York, a Manhattan congregation that is older than the USA, beginning in the 1740s. He holds a PhD in theology, and has recently published Assurance of Salvation: Implications of a New Testament Theology of Hope. What is Gospel Neighboring? "It sounds like the second great commandment, to love our neighbor as ourselves as we do justice and do good so as to share the mercy of Christ with others." Matt's Favorite Gospel Neighboring Quote: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." - Micah 6:8 "Evangelism is a multi-story building with each level representing a different stage of our relationship with non-Christians." (An image borrowed from Tim Keller) Important Lessons Learned in Gospel Neighboring It is easy to unintentionally cloud the gospel with cultural topics of discussion. It is tempting to imitate another successful church, but each church needs to minister uniquely to their neighborhood and context. Neighboring and church planting is often 'trial and error'. Sometimes it takes root, but sometimes it doesn't. Action for the Next 24 Hours Do a prayer walk in your neighborhood, and pray for specific people. If you live in a rural area, then do a prayer drive. Chris' Final Bit of Gospel Neighboring Wisdom Imagine where you would be apart from God's grace.
