Episode Info: A bit of a change from our normal salons, this week I give a lecture of sorts on portraying a sex worker persona in the SCA. The first of two parts featuring one of our most frequently requested classes in the Knowne World Courtesans, delivered to you in digital format. This class could easily be re-titled Fearless Flirting 101 for the mundane world. I walk you through a handout by Baronessa Ginevra Fiammetta di Silvestri in this episode. In part one I give an introduction to the concept of courtesan’s in the SCA and give you advice for getting started building your sex worker persona. I discuss getting into persona (or into character if you prefer) and how to stay there. I give suggestions for fictional characters that are excellent #courtesaninspiration. I go over inviting body language and posture, giving great advice for sprucing up your bows and curtsies. I finish up part one with a discussion of terms of address in the SCA and how to know which ones to use for whom. Show Notes Name articles curated by the heralds of the SCA are provided to help you choose a name for your persona that conforms to our standards for accuracy. Also great for historical writing projects, role-playing characters, world-building, or even a fun theme for your video game characters. Desmond Morris’ book Peoplewatching has a description of the full escalation of human sexual affections. I’ve grown up exposed to his documentaries and philosophies and they’re invaluable for better understanding your own and your fellow human’s interactions. The Wikipedia article on psychological manipulation is a good jumping off point for learning more about the types of behaviors that abusers and predators use to deploy to get what they want from unwilling people. Upcoming salons will focus on non-monogamy, polyamory, and inspirational women before 1600 CE. Do you have questions we can answer? Stories, experiences, or research to share?
