Ep 23 - Groundbreakings in Detroit
May 25 12
Detroit broke ground this week in a myriad of ways. First there were the official groundbreaking ceremonies for two grocery stores set to open in Spring 2013. The first ceremony was for Whole Foods in Midtown, whose opening is often taken as a bellwether in up and coming neighborhoods. The Gateway Marketplace on 8 Mile was the second development to break ground this week. Slated to open with Meijer as it's premiere anchor, this will be the first development of its kind in Detroit in 50 years. Keeping to our ground-breaking theme, we spoke with Dr. Rick Foster, who has proposed opening an urban agriculture research center in Detroit. There he hopes to study vertical farms and other innovative farming techniques. We've got the scoop on the Detroit Mercantile Company, which just opened in Eastern Market, and has the same old-timey general store feel. Of course we're also ramping up for Movement 2012. We have an interview with Burst Radio about what kind of electronic music you'll find at the world-renown festival.
